He was in and out of hospital of nearly weekly with "bronchilitis" when I paed came in and explained to me they were diagnosing him with Asthma and putting him on beclozone daily from then on my son has been on a preventor, he is now taking fluxotide 2x daily and on ventolin nearly everyday. He suffers from allergies so his asthma is dustmite related but because his reaction level of the skin prink test was so high for the dustmite allergy they said that could nearly exclusively cause his asthma. Also cold air brings it on as well as teething, any illness whether ear infection of tonsilitis it all causes the asthma to flare as well.

Awesome you are talking to the GP tomorrow bcos when it comes to wheezy/rattle always best to get checked..best of luck caliand jack

    Author: Shelt
Subject: 38597
Posted: 31 March 2011 at 1:24pm

G has asthma and has been a wheezy baby all along. She got bronchiolitis heaps (20 plus times) in her first year and was hospitalised 4 times but they would not diagnose her till she was 2. However, she was ventolin responsive from about 8 months onwards so she was prescribed a preventor and a reliever inhalor from about a year old but they just said she had reactive airways and wouldn't say asthma till she turned 2. She was diagnosed 3 days after her 2nd birthday.

We just saw the paed about G's asthma and she said that there are 3 types of asthma - one that kids grow out by age 5 of as their lungs develop, one that kids generally grow out of in their teens, and one that continues into adulthood. Unfortunately I am one of those adults who didn't grow out of asthma, and I also have hayfever. G has mild eczema and hayfever as well so things aren't looking that great for her.

One thing I did notice with G very early on is that she wheezes heaps when she has been running around or is doing something very active (bouncing on the tramp for example). She is particularly bad when she is sick and when it is cold outside (ie all winter).

If not it could be caused by heaps of different things. Cooper was the wheezyist sounding baby, going blue whole pile of stuff like that, turned out to be reflux/allergies to wheat/dairy. It could have been very easy to label him asthmatic cause I am.

Good luck, Dr's will be able to help.

    Author: fallen
Subject: 38597
Posted: 31 March 2011 at 1:05pm

Both my kids have asthma. DD was diagnosed when she was about a year old.

We suspected DS had it from when he was quite little. He was quite rattly and wheezy. From when he was 6 months old (winter) he frequently had bronchialtitis (Sp?) and was hospitalised regularly. Our GP has been very supportive. She prescribed a releaver inhailer at around 7-8 months but as the tubes in his lungs were still really small the releaver didn't always work. DS was about 11 1/2 months old when the GP finally prescribed a preventer inhailer. Since then hes not had any hospital admissions. The GP said they aren't allowed to diagnose babies as having asthma until they are 1 year old minimum and some doctors think even 2-21/2 years.

Apparently asthma often goes hand in hand with eczema, hayfever and other allergies. Both my kids have eczema and allergies. DD gets severe hayfever too.

Good luck!
