I did wonder about this, actually. I know in the US many obstetricians are happy to go ahead and do c-sections for anyone who's willing to pay. But I've never heard of that here.

For what it's worth, I felt completely fine after giving birth vaginally. A bit tired, but no long-lasting pain! Most obstetricians acting in their private capacity wouldn't do a caesaraen unless it was in some way necessary, even if you wanted to pay for it.

For a first baby it is most likely that you will be in some discomfit for 24hours at the most - and you can have pain relief to keep on top of that pain.

For a caesaraen I had a five day hospital stay with the pain somewhat controlled, then two weeks of a lot of discomfit (even with good pain pills) then it took me up to eleven weeks to get my physical energy back.

I agree that you probably couldn't get a c-section, unless medically indicated, through the public system. You would probably have to fork out big bucks for a private obstetrician.

And small people can give birth too. Yes, it is hard work, but I would imagine recovering from major abdominal surgery might be hard work in a different way.

I would think unless there is a medical reason for a c sec you would need to pay to go private. Hi Kels,

Thanks for your help. Our midwife comes from wellington hospital. It is really hard to find one at this time. We make all the calls, but seems like all midwifes are occupied. The size of my partner is small. I don't want to see her suffer during give birth. So that is why I ask for some help. But we already have a appointment next Monday at lower hut. Hopefully we can get some information.

Hi Neil

I didnt want to read and leave. Has your partner got a midwife? or a Lead maternity carer looking after her?? If so they should have knowledge in that area. I didnt even know you could go private and request a c-sect unless due to previous c-sect in which case there is no need to go private. Best of luck

Hi there,

My partner is going to have a baby due to mid of June. She wants to have c-section. I found there are only 4 private hospital in Wellington. Does anyone have direct contact to a specialist that can do c-section? Or anyone has same experience could you help me with this please? I contact some of them, they don't do c-section.
