Hi there - by the looks of the last post, I'm not sure this page is even active anymore but I thought it was worth a try :) my name is Michelle and I recently moved to NZ from the UK...we are living in blockhouse bay and have a 5 year old and a 3 year old! Congratulations! Our boy was born on the 15th - Valentines Day was a non event - had a sweep, sent for a scan to check position, found to be breech so was booked in for a c-section the next day.

How are you finding motherhood?

Velvet Dream the reason for the age limit on mobiles is because beyond 5 months babies can reach up and grab the mobiles, so it's a safety thing. Personally we are still going to use bubs mobile - he loves it! We've just made sure his cot base is down low enough that he can't reach it

I am wondering if anyone knows much about mobiles for cots. My Feb baby 2012 loves hers, but the batteries run out so fast. I have been looking for another one that winds up, but most say 0-5 months. Why is this?

As for here, we've had two nights of 9 hour sleeps (7pm to 4am) but paying that off with not so much day time sleep. Little rascal has only just gone to sleep after fighting it for the past hour.

Hope reflux meds are helping! We are on losec now and have given up dairy, both since 5 days ago, had 3 x good nights (my idea of a good night is one 4-5 hour stretch, followed by a 2 hour) and 2 diabolical ones (waking every 1.5 hours and/or not settling til midnight/2am). Hoping its starting to kick in, fingers crossed. My poor wee poppet seems to really fight sleep.

We're dealing with supply issues which I think may be caused/exacerbated by a tongue tie. Feeling a bit fed up with Family Centre and hoping to see LLL and another LC this week or next. Fingers crossed! I'm also on motillium to increase supply, so we'll see if that helps. T fed from the bottle for most of the day. He didn't like it, but he slept well.

He drank his bottles nicely yesterday and had his biggest sleep overnight to date! Very happy mummy here today.

I'm going okay here at the moment. Meds help heaps, I think without them I would be a right off! We are still having issues with George and the bottle. He starts off fine and when he stops (whether after 50mls or 150mls) will not take it back. Also lots of crying and fussing with the bottle as well, sometimes wanting it back but getting rather upset about it. Trying out reflux meds at the moment to see if we can get it sorted. It is just the same as what we went through last time but at least we are on to it a little earlier this time. I really can't believe he is almost 3 months now, although the last few weeks have dragged a little. Only 5 weeks now until I head back to work. Just hope he has settled down a bit by then.

Awww yeah she is still pretty little! Although she has almost outgrown newborn huggies nappies - been far too many explosions lately

OB - how are you getting on? Amazing that George is almost 3 months already. Although it doesn't really feel like the time is flying tbh. Katelyn HATES sleep, takes until 10 or 11pm most nights to settle (last night was a killer -2am!!). We've had a tongue tie lasered, currently being treated for thrush and waiting to see a paed so lets hope things start to get better soon. Mummy here is struggling on 5 hours sleep a night, not to mention seriously starting to worry about the long term effect on K if it's not sorted soon.

Hope those on here are having good weekends! Cant believe how quiet it is here, compared to the fb group which seems to never sleep!

Went to visit a friend yesterday who has a new baby. I was cuddling the 5-day-old girl with Luke playing on the floor. My friend's 2-year-old boy came up to me and tried to take my arms off the baby, then tried to pick Luke up and give him to me.

"No trading in your old baby for my brand new sister!"

I couldn't believe how enormous Luke looked against her, and she's a pound heavier than he was at birth!

Had an introductory visit from the PAFT (Parents As First Teachers) Educator. The program sounds really interesting so we're signing up. Our first teaching visit is next week.

George is slowly getting use to the bottle. He is a heaps happier wee boy and we are getting lots of smiles and the occasional laugh/giggle now too. We have just booked our 3 month plunket appointment and it is only 2 weeks away.

I'm finding it OK, actually, and T has been way happier, but not sure it's down to dairy (he's 6 weeks, so getting bigger, and going to Osteo and baby massage too. Pain in the nuts when dining out, though!

Glad the meds are going well- just think, this will all pass. G will be happy soon, and before you know it, he'll be a delightful big baby :)

How is going dairy free going PWW? We have just found out George's unsettledness, rashes, etc is all because he is like his big sister and is dairy intolerant. I was so hoping it wasn't going to rear its ugly head again. We are just in the process of getting the same formula she was on for him, just a bit of a slow process unfortunately but at least I know there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. I really don't think I could go completely dairy free even though so many people can, so will stop feeding him once we can get the formula. At least I can say I gave feeding a good go this time but to get my happy baby (and happy mum) we can't keep going with it. Must also say the meds are working well and without them I really don't know how I would be getting through all of this.

Oops, I didn't really mean to say "preferred". I don't think they want him to do it permanently or anything, just that they gave up and let him do it today. As one of our facebook ladies said, you know you have a difficult baby if family centre will let him sleep on you!

So loving baby massage, and really glad I am learning to do it slowly and "properly". Tonight T knew what was coming as soon as we lay him down on the towel- thrust his feet out the bottom and started cooing.

Here's what I put on FB:
Family centre today. Not sure how i feel about it to be honest. It does seem T sometimes doesn't get enough out of me per feed, as he gets tired and lazy, which was useful, but I found them really patronising (example- one of the women got T up while I was at lunch because he was windy-- they thought overtired, then changed their minds--gave him back to me when I got there, pretty much asleep, then came along and said "well done mum" when I had managed to keep him asleep for 20 more minutes), and although they thought his colic seemed quite bad, they just blamed it on the fact that I had spag bol last night, even though i pointed out that it happens nearly every feed (i am happy to keep a food diary, but felt the way they just blamed the garlic really frustrating). They criticised me for using a dream swaddle, even though he busted out of their wrap twice, and for using a hammock for day sleeps, despite the fact that they couldn't get him to sleep in a bassinet, and I didn't get lunch because they preferred him to sleep on me!

Luke's been really settled today too, he's slept most of the day in Aunty Jo's arms!

I can't believe it's two months either. At our Plunket check on Thursday we found out that he's double his birthweight. He looks huge to me now.

Actually I understand the it's great that he's growing so well, but how dare he grow up so quickly!

Three words: wedding went well. T slept a LOT (thanks Osteo), woke up very grumpy, but managed to doze in the wrap for long enough for me to have a little boogie. Cried a lot on the way home, but settled quicklyish (although he didn't sleep for yonks) with some cuddles from Mum. Obviously it was a bit much for the poor dude, so I'm glad we left when we did.

I agree Osteos are great. Ours didn't have to do much for George but apparently I was a bit of a mess. He seems to have taken away most of my aches and pains now which is great.

Excellent, Naomi! We went to a baby osteo today- despite Toby's easy pregnancy and birth, he must have been pretty mushed up in there, as he is seriously tight up his left side, which the osteo thinks is contributing to / causing his gut issues and general unhappiness.

My words are "baby talk, yay!" During his massage on Thursday I heard happy noises for one of the first times, and Daddy got heaps while getting T ready for his bath. So lovely.

The Bouncer Works!

Luke wont sleep in my arms, he wont sleep in his bed, but he'll sleep in his bouncer! Such a relief! Since he's getting some sleep during the day he's sleeping better at night too. My smiley boy is back

We also took him to a baby chiropractor. A friend recommended it because he had a rough birth. I was amazed, she showed me that he couldn't turn his neck to the right properly. Now that's clearing up he should be a lot more cheerful. Highly recommended!

Intolerances sux big time PWW! Hope it sorts its self for you soon. Good luck at the family centre on Monday. Have heard those sort of places are great. I went to the Plunket one in Palmerston when Gracie was a baby and they were great at reassuring me.

It is looking like George also has an intolerance like his big sister. He seems okay when feeding from me but I have been giving him formula in the evening and that doesn't seem to be agreeing too well with him. At least our Dr is great and will get onto it quickly for us.

Baby massage rocks.

All my "fix my baby" appointments are going well. LC thinks he may have an intolerance, so I am dairy free, but also feeding one-sided and trying to make sure he doesn't gorge himself. Baby massage today was so amazing- well worth the $30. I can't wait to get the hang of it myself- right now our poor boy is so tightly wound he only let the therapist do his legs, so I may not even get past the foot!

Waikato family centre on Monday- hoping they can help me get a better hang distinguishing his hunger cues from his "want to feed" cues. Hmm. good luck with that!

Thanks guys. I'm not too worried about having it as I know the meds will only be for a limited time and that they do actually help. I had kept putting how I was feeling down to sleep deprivation but started realising that there was more to it than just that. I am very lucky to have a supportive family and MW who has kept in contact with us even though we are no longer under her. I also have a great Dr who could easily tell something was up. Knowing that it is just because of the chemical changes in my body helps too. I also know that once George is older I will find things easier and it will all be difference once I am back at work as well. I am making sure I get out of the house regularly to help as well.

Unfortunately Auckland is just a little too far away PB. A cuppa would have been great.

This mummy business is tough work, I really had no idea! It's great that you knew what signs to look out for and have got onto it early. I hope you feel better soon and that you have a couple of close people you can talk too that are supportive. Wish you lived in Auckland so we could have a cuppa x

I have 3 letter for today:

I had a feeling it was coming and I had it with my last child as well. I have gotten onto it earlier this time and hopefully within a week or 2 the meds will have kicked in and I will start feeling better again. I was trying so hard to not feel this way this time around but I guess it just happens to some people. I am glad I did go to the dr and talk about it with him and he could tell something was up right from when he first saw me today.

Bed without crying! That's awesome! 12lb is also awesome! Luca is just about 10lb. I'm a co-sleeper. I don't think I could sleep with him beside me without a seperate area if the bed for him and a wedge. Generally he sleeps on me though, so I know exactly where he is.

News from Starship is that they reviewed the tests we had up there a couple of weeks back and his heart has deteriorated so much they're increasing the visits by the special care nurse (who monitors his oxygen saturation etc) from once a week to twice a week. I'm going to phone Starship tomorrow and get all the info and find out what this means re the surgery, as I heard this secondhand from the Tauranga special care nurse.

Twice now today I have managed to put George down to bed wide awake and not heard a peep from him. Have checked him and he has still been awake, just laying there and then later asleep. He hasn't done that in ages! Hopefully I haven't jinxed myself now by saying it.

I found the times I co-slept with Gracie I got next to no sleep so know what you mean PWW. Hopefully tonight will be a little better for you.

I think it only helps T because he's a sucker. He'll only take it if the only thing wrong is that he feels like sucking something!

We had a sleep free but sort of nice night last night, but it involved far more co-sleeping than I'm happy with. (though snuggling with your baby is the best, I'm too paranoid to get any rest myself)

Dummy doesn't work here either. Spend more time trying to get it in and putting it back in than it does helping.

Took an hour to get George to sleep after his last feed last night. Would drift off to sleep and then just start crying again. Was nice when he was finally asleep.

We've had a few hours here too, and a few minutes of happy baby too, which was nice for a change! Toby only gets a tiny bit of floor time, as he's always feeding, crying or sleeping. A little bit of tummy time every day, and no nappy time every time he poos or wees on himself! He also has black and white pictures by his change table, so gets to look at those a few times a day.

Bit scary to think that I'll still be learning with #2!

Hey, PWW don't worry about things like that. They will all get there in their own time. George doesn't get heaps of tummy time either but I always make sure I lay him on his tummy when drying him after his bath for a little while so that he is getting some at least. Some mornings he doesn't get much floor time at all cos of not sleeping much so not staying up for long after his feeds. One thing I have learnt is you can't worry about all the little things (even though I still do too much probably). I go back full time just before George is 4 months old (only because he was so early!!!). Luckily my first two weeks back are only 4 days weeks and I only have 5 weeks before the term break so will be home a little more with him then. George has at least gone down this afternoon and is still asleep! I must say there has been a lot of learning happening for me this time around as well, especially with BFing as Gracie was fully FF by 4 weeks old so not feeding as reguarly as George and I could get more help if needed or leave her with my Mum if I needed time out without having to worry about milk being available for her.

Me too Oscar, I think that's why I'm so sad about it. I will be FT for his 3-6 months, so will only see my baby in the evenings and weekends. But PT after that- yay!

I worry that he is not getting enough tummy time etc due to being so unsettled. I was reading my active baby book from Waikato Regional Council last night and feeling like my baby will be left behind. I know that's silly, but it's one of the things on my list of worries!

We have had an unsettled day so far here today too. Wouldn't really settle in his basinett like he normally does and very spilly after feeds today too. I'm still just hanging in there with this newborn phase. The sooner it is over the better for me unfortunately. The fun times will all start when I go back to work

That overtireness is just evil. So hard when they are still hungry but keep falling asleep but won't stay asleep cos they are hungry and the cycle continues.

Most days we are still feeding 2 hourly during the morning with little sleeps inbetween. I think sitting around for so long sometimes makes me even more tired. At least I have only gotten up once a night for the last two nights. Hopefully that will help me start to feel a little more normal.

For better or worse, we're leaving the house today. Trying on breastfeeding dresses, and then some of the ante-natal mums who have criers are coming round for a walk into town so I don't feel bad if T melts down!
