Hi, just wanted to leave a note re my experience of having a planned C section (public system) at queen Mary maternity in Dunedin. Initially, the whole process seemed a bit haphazard as we live about 4 hours from Dunedin, but the system appeared to be set up for people who lived locally. After the surgeon gave me a date for the surgery, the midwives at the hospital then changed the dates on me. It appears once the surgery has been booked, the scheduling is then managed by the midwives at the hospital depending on staffing levels. I Emailed my surgeon who responded that there was no clinical risk due to the change in dates, so that was ok. The hospital experience itself was however, very good. The surgeon and the theatre team at the op was very good and looked after me very well. The midwifes who looked after me in recovery and my 4 days in hospital were very good- no reason to fault them. Just remember to demand pain meds as this was the only issue I had. How do we get hold of the social worker? Last time I was told about it but told to ring WINZ and they new nothing about it. Which is a bummer as we are 3 hrs from Dunedin and last time hubby had to stay 3 nights in a hospital as well as 2 trips back and forth to Dunedin.

Ah ok thanks for that! Would just be looking for accomodation for myself as husband can't afford to take the time off work unfortunately !! But will remember to look in to that for sure :)

Seek out the social worker there too you will be entitled to financial assistance with travel and accommodation for your DH if you live far away from the hospital (I think its about 1 - 1 1/2 hours.

Opposite ends of the country but when DS was in SCBU in Waitakere Hospital in Auckland, I stayed in the maternity ward for a good few days even after he was discharged from there. I'm pretty sure that if your baby is in NICU, then you stay in a room in the postnatal ward until you need to be discharged. If baby remains in NICU after that time, and you are from out of town, then you will either be placed in a room on the 5th floor (where NICU is) or put in a room at the homestay-thing across the road. Especially if you are breastfeeding, you will probably need to be on-call during the night etc. They usually try and keep you on the 5th floor, close to the unit. Hey guys,
Not sure where to post this but I thought i might try in here...

I am seeing my OB on Thursday and there is a chance my baby will be induced...I am already full term so there is no huge concern about bubbie but i was hoping someone could help me answer a question

I live out of Dunedin about an hour and a half away but we are birthing in Dunedin...if my baby has to be in the NICU would I be allowed to stay in the hospital? My husband would have to come home as he will need to work and he wouldnt be able to travel every day until we come home...Hoping we will be able to stay in the hospital? hoping someone has had some experience in this department but especially with queen mary
