Thats not that bad then Rach. Once it is under $5000 then you can def go away overseas. yeah Dh (he who buries head in sand) copped a $200 speed ticket, then court costs then ignored it and when i discovered it was $800 - could have killed him
Think boy racers who were 20 - 25 5 years ago tho and that is who has the BIG fines....they will regret those ones...most of them look at $500 - $1000 per fine...
Also dispute tribunal ones not paid count too....and they can be up to $7500 a pop....

Yep. He is such a clown. They pulled him up, so he pulled over and they pulled in front of him and he got out of the car but left it in neutral and it rolled forward. The minimum limit to be stopped from travelling is like $5000 anyway, which as someone else pointed out is a lot of fines.

I had a heap of fines as a teenager from driving unregistered unwarranted cars but they were still nowhere near $5K. Considering the average speeding ticket etc. is less than say $200, plus court costs of up to another $200, you'd have to rack up a lot of fines to get to 5k.

Reparation....thats what it was...becomes a court fine when it is unpaid but is basically a fine to pay to the victims of the crime...

The guy that was made to pay at the airport was not from running up parking tickets etc but because he wasn't paying money to his victim (can't remember what its called). I have to agree with the ladies who have said "DO the crime PAY the time" i know that ALOT of people have 1 maybe 2 fines but that really should only acummulate to $1000 thereabouts so if the ammount you owe is significantly higher than that (indicating several offenses) then that person must not have learnt a lesson and this may just be the way to get through to them. if you have fines you may want to look at borrowing to repay them by bank loan etc = they get repaid - you have to repay the monies anyways AND you get to travel...why have this hang over you...
another thing not mentioned here is that ifyou have baycorp listings some can actually stop you from travelling also - have knowledge of a few people stopped at border and questioned re baycorp debts...most of the time they let you go on them as dont think they can stop you per se but is a HUGE warning as may not be lenient the next time...
I made my Dh (he who buries head in sand and incurred court costs on a speed ticket) repay his - $20 a week for about 18 months - pretty painless but better than getting a warrant to arrest out on you and more court costs added!!! I kinda agree with Lulu (living with a cop kinda warps your view on such things!) but this law is not out to get people who are already trying to pay off their fines, it is to get those people who ignore them and keep getting more. Andy has told me many a horrid tale of people who owe so many thousands of dollars for various reasons, only to go to court and have them wiped by the judge 'cause the amount they owe is so high. Kinda like a reward for offending...

If you have a current time payment arrangement and haven't defaulted on the payments you are allowed to leave provided you have a return ticket. While I do agree with you Lulu, I find myself in the same predicament as Rachael. My man is paying off his fines AND doing community service to pay off $25k in fines. My parents were going to pay for our honeymoon and now we can't go because of the new law. And no they are not willing to pay off his fines & I wouldn't ask them anyway. So now I'm putting off my wedding for another 3 years. I'm sorry but we all have our crosses to bear, a lot of us have come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have had prejudice from authority figures which have led to what seems like unjust fines and convictions. I have to disagree on that most of my partners fines were gotten when he was under 18 and for things like no reg and wof. He was kicked out of home at 15 so he had to work and wasn't getting barely enough money to support himself so could hardly afford those. We grew up in a small town and one particualer policeman used to drive past his house every day to see if his car was there and fine him if it wasn't. They also use to beat DP and his mates up any chance thay got and more fines for fighting back.
He now works really hard and is paying as much as we can afford and why shouldn't we be allowed a holiday? Thou DH came home and told me that some guy was stopped with about $3000 and was told to pay up before he could go. Hey there everyone.

I was just wanting to  know about the new law they passed in NZ, where if you have left NZ and are returning to visit you aren't allowed to leave the country if you owe money (have debts over there). I've been trying to look it up on the net but can't find anything ??????

Just interested as like most people I have debts but have made arrangements to pay them off, so just wanted to know a bit more about it if anyone is able to help
