Author: Paws
Subject: 3959
Posted: 04 October 2006 at 11:34am

I was induced at 9.00pm on Thursday night (10 days overdue) with what was supposed to be a "primer" to get me ready for the inducement proper to bring on full labour. I woke up at 2.30am with contractions but didn't buzz the midwife until 3.30am as I wasn't really sure it was the real thing!! Brendan was called back into the hospital at 4.00am and by 5.00am I was in the pool. I can tell you now it did sweet stuff all!! I really thought I was nearly screaming the place down at times though I've been assured I was actually not that noisey!! But 6.00am I was begging for pain relief as some of the contactions were virtually on top of each other which seemed pretty odd to me...I thought this all all meant to take longer.

6.30 I was taken out of the pool and really slowly got back to the birthing suite and not long afterwards starting sucking back the gas. That stuff really leaves you spaced!! I swear I don't remember half of what I was muttering! Apparently I was refusing an epidural but begging for the c-section!! (I think "Cut her out" where the exact words!).

Not long after that came the uncontrollable urge to start pushing...as I was showing external signs of being fully dialated the midwife said to go for it...that was getting no where and when Monique examined me at 8.00am I was only 8cm dialated. Still I had progressed VERY radidly in a short space of time so no wonder I was screaming! It was then found Maddie was prosterior so at 9.00am that's when I met my new best friend David the anethatist who gave me the epidural. Bliss....why would someone not want one!??

They wanted to get Maddie to turn and me fully dialated hence the epidural to stop the pushing. After another 6 and half hours I was checked by the surgeon and Monique and they established that not only had I not progressed but Maddie had got her ear stuck! The surgeon said it was an easy decision for a c-section.

Once in surgery the decision was even easier as it was discovered the walls of the uterus were paper thin and had a gone much longer I stood a good chance of rupturing.

Maddie then made her (loud) enterance into the world at 5.15pm.

I've been recovering pretty well though I still feel tender and I'm sure I have more aches and pains that when I was pregnant!!

Maddie is starting to settle into being home and I'm glad to be in my own space. The first few days were ok in hospital as I was lucky to either have the room to myself and when I did share it was actually with a friend of mine from OhBaby who gave birth 12 hours after me. However once a new room mate moved in I'd had enough and was lucky enough to be able to be discharged.

We have had to switch to bottle feeding as I've had extreme pain breastfeeding. Even with a shield everything cracked and the pain was so bad I was begging not to have to feed Maddie!! The midwife has been really supportive of our decision and I've been a lot calmer. B has also loves being able to feed his daughter! I'm expressing what I can for now and we're topping up with formula. Maddie has taken to it with ease which has been a relief and has also been a lot more settled as well though she is still a bit mixed up with night and day.

So that's about where we are at the moment. It's been an emotion filled journey so far and I'm sure there is alot more to come! We wouldn't change it for anything though!
