Thanks guys, High 9 its been 9 years since I had a toddler so I really cant remember, miss 13 (on sat) didnt talk at all till she got grommets then started talking lots but cant remember about DS 10.

My 15mo, while very loud and very verbal, says nothing clearly, possibly mumumumumum, but I don't think thats for me, more that he likes saying it. I personally think it's very normal. They all seem to catch up when they get to 2.
He's fully not interested in making himself understood.

DS is almost 18months, he has 3 mates all the same age and they all minic new words instantly then repeat them to practice and can put 2 words together. Aiden definatly understands everything, but doenst babble much or say many words. He knows quite a few baby signs- mostly for animals.
He says Mumma, Isla, taa, ball, Pa(grandpa), woo woo(dog),pop (as in popping bubbles or the sound that rice bubbles make!), and snorts like a pig,lol!

Its completly in the range of normal to not be saying anyting much at this age, just like the huge variation between when diff kids start to walk. My 16 month (nearly 17 month) old also only says about half a dozen words, but babbles a lot and obviously understands what we are saying. She is growing up bilingual and pretty much only says words that are the same in both languages (or are animal noises).

I think the database thing is a good way of describing it! DS is coming up 18 months and only says a couple of words (dadda, which can be for Dad or anything else, he occasionally says mama and now and then tedda, teddy). He understands so much though and follows direction really well.
Like someone else said, I believe he is taking it all in and one day he will just started talking away.
I often compare it to walking, DS didn't even attempt to walk until about 16 months and then one day he was off and looked like he'd been walking for months, before that I think he was just sitting back and taking it all in.

What were your other two like?

My granddad was a late talker as was my mum. My mum refused to say anything until she was about 3 and my granddad didn't speak until 3 as well but he had to have his tonsils removed first.

DD and I were the opposite though.

If you are worried, perhaps you could visit your GP? As they would probably be able to point you in the right direction if they're worried too or be able to tell you what's normal/not. I think by 2 years they *should* be able to say so many words but by 18 months she be able to understand about 10-20 words which he is doing. My 16 month is exactly the same!!! He says about five words (mamma, dadda, woo woo for dog, more and no) and that's it. And even then, dadda isn't used correctly most of the time. He does seem to understand what we say, but I must admit I am starting to wonder when the words will come!

Tauris my 14 mth old is like that atm, not really interested in saying much (that is words) she babbles and is totally incomprehensible most of the time. The only 3 words she says well and really understands what they are is Mumum, Da (for dad) and Ta (plus nodding and pointing) for whatever else she wants.
We talk to her lots and she understands a lot but is not interested in saying proper words AT ALL!

Yep, both my older 2 were/are ilike that. B didnt say his first cleary understood word until he was 16 months (bird of all things!) yet by the time he was 3 we could hold a small conversation with him.. now I cant get him to shut up

Jae has just turned 2 and says a few clear words and 2-3 word phrases (theres a lot more that DP and I understand, but others wouldnt), but often walks around talking baby babble (but in a very serious tone like shes telling us something very important!) So far my 16 mth old has said 3 maybe 4 words/phrases and the only one he says with any clarity is Car which sounds like Tar.

When I get him to say Mumma Mumma he says Bubba Bubba and he occasionally says "all gone" which is what I say when his food is finished. When I say other words he just looks at me and doesnt even attempt them.

He does understand what I am saying because he responds to questions, No and ta and if I ask him if he is hungry (or if he wants to tell me) he walks over to his highchair and makes a deep mmmmmm noise. And if he wants a bottle he makes a high pitched hmm noise LOL.
