I have never had a miscarriage so have no idea what it would be like to go thru

I have had a few operations BUT being in the maternity ward/birthing suites with a wee babe in your arms is an amazing experience. I had a complicated vb birth and enjoyed every minute of my 5 day stay with my first born. MW were great but in TImaru we have the joy of our own room with a shared ensuite. the thought of going home with a baby I had no idea how to bf was far to scary to me and 2nd daily visits with MW just not enuf. I didnt want to leave until I had bf sorted.

But everyone is different one of my friends went home 3hr after birth and a few have had homebirths, but for me I enjoy the stay in hospital and help from midwives and visits from friends etc

You will find what works for you when the time comes play it by ear I say.
I can't begin to understand the negative associations you have with hospitals, but I would suggest that you do the tour of the birthing and maternity suites (we did ours as part of the antenatal classes held by the hopsital, but I belive you can do the tour separately)- as hopefully you could then see that particular part of the hospital as a (largely) joyous, miraculous and life affirming place that I for one felt privileged to be part of

It wasn't the best stay as the lady in my room (2 of us in a 3 bed room) had visitors and call at all hours of the night. But I have to say that I would have prefered that over being at home. I was nervous with my first and felt safer at the hospital.

Ben was born at 2.30am and would have stayed a night at Waitakere then 2 at Helensville but Waitakere had no beds available so I went up to Helensville at lunchtime. Helensville was lovely and it was a great chance to rest.

This baby is planned for a Birthcare Parnell birth and a stay as long as I can!! I see it as my only chance to get a good rest before DH, the boys and the housework call!

Even though I worked at the hospital, and had no problem going there everyday, I hadn't confronted the locations that were very stressful for me. I spent the first half of my pregnancy trying to work out clearly what my pregnancy/ birth fears were, and the second half working out ways to manage them. I was then able to enjoy the birth and postnatal stay.

Just a thought if the hospital is your birthing destiny - if there is no choice to birth there then you will need a good plan to deal with it.

Good luck.

Or you can go home. The thing with public hospitals is that they can't make you stay or leave. However if you chose to leave earlier than they feel is safe they may make you sign a form saying that you chose to leave AMA or against medical advice. This will protect the hospital and staff from repercussions if things go pear shaped.

DH has only ever had horrible experiences with hospitals and really doesn't like them. He's had to process a lot to get comfortable with the idea of being there with me for Grublettes birth. It might be a plan to talk to your midwife about your feelings regarding the hospital and she might have some other suggestions for you.

Tbh they were fantastic! But didn't have room in their maternity ward so we were transferred to warkworth birthing centre which was oh my god even better! Good food, good midwives , peaceful environment...I didn't want to leave...;)

I think normally you have to book but I heard that they are expandingtheir facilities so more rooms! But honestly if I can I'm gonna go there next time too... Plus cos it's so "far" from my family in takapuna we didntget many visitors and really got to bond with ds ... aND dh got to stay with us for the first night... Bonus!
