Author: pumpkino
Subject: 39888
Posted: 19 July 2011 at 4:16pm

Ditto what Littlebug said. I had HG with DS and have just been diagnosed again in my second pregnancy. Hopefully we have caught it early this time so won't end up in hospital again.

Def go see your GP if it's getting out of control - don't let yourself get dehydrated. If you can keep water down, that's OK (food isn't as essential) but if you go 24 hours without a big drink you need to be on medication or rehydrated. There are three tiers of meds they can try (maxalon, cyclizine, trapezatron (also known as odansetron or similar)). Cyclizine has always worked for me. All are safe in pregnancy so don't stress about that (although obviously you wouldn't want to take anything unless necessary). Just remember that while the meds will stop the nausea you will probably still feel ill, so it's not a cure (just helps you keep stuff down).

Can't emphasis "little and often" enough!! Some people think ginger works (ginger ale, gingernut biscuits etc) but didn't work for me. I stick to ice lollies like flavourices. And also marmite on ryvita for some weird reason!

Good luck - it sucks but it is worth it in the end! There are MUCH worse complications we could have...

P

And don't get overtired. Sucking on a lolly or an iceblock can help, especially while getting something prepared to eat. Nothing would stay down for me other than carbs, in the first half of pregnancy - so mainly potatoes, hot chips, pasta, etc. Avoid overly acidic food because it is NOT nice coming up. And when you feel like you will throw up, skull some water - it's much nicer throwing up water than stomach acid and bile.

There are some medications available from your midwife/GP/obstetrician if you get really desperate. I ended up on a cocktail of meds, which did provide a little bit of relief, but not completely.

Best of luck, big hugs!

But after coming off my progesterone supplements, I feel miles better. Are you taking anything that may be making your morning sickness worse??
