Whenever he screams, drop your voice to a whisper. He'll copy. If not, then ignoring also works. Feed the behaviour you want, starve what you don't want.

My son did it when he figured out how to do it...especialy in large spaces and those with echoes. I chose not to respond to it to make sure he didn't do it to see my reaction and he got bored with it after a coupe of weeks and never did it agian. Not sure what to do though if it doesn't stop after the novelty has worn off.

He just does it anyway. Which is just fab for DD, poor thing gets screeched at all day long as she sleeps in the lounge in her bassinet during the day. On the upside, she can sleep through just about anything now!!

I have started shhhh'ing with my finger to my lips and whispering 'S is sleeping' or 'quiet voice L' and he gets the message a lot of the time (and now copies me and does it to his sister when she is crying)

I figure he will grow out of it eventually, it seems to be just attention seeking seeing as he can't say a lot just yet.

    Author: snugglebug
Subject: 39953
Posted: 19 July 2011 at 12:49pm

My 8 month old has discovered how to scream. He's not screaming because there's anything wrong, I think he just realised he can make a loud sound and he does it, often lol he's a very social, talkative baby so it's another way to use his voice I guess. But when he does it in public, people glare, and if he does it at home too much I worry what the neighbours will think!

Im assuming this is just a stage? Please tell me they stop it lol

I know what I would do to cope with it with a toddler, but Im unsure how to handle it with a baby.

At the moment I am just saying 'no' in a stern voice when he does that, the same voice I use when he goes to something he shouldn't touch (he's crawling and getting into everything). He has started to understand no with the touching things, but he isn't applying it to the screaming.

If I ignore him so far he just keeps doing it... I try distracting him with something else to do which sometimes works sometimes not.

He does also scream sometimes if he's standing up somewhere and can't get down or if you take something off him he wants lol... but I think that's because he's clever and he knows he gets attention if he screams.

Aside from the obvious headache of hearing it all the time, Im worried he will get a sore throat or aggravate his reflux which is quite bad.

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks
