I ended up with a 3rd degree with DS1 - and was refered on to the hospital to discuss the option of having a CS. The specialist there read my notes and said that she couldnt see why I couldnt try for another VB.

DS2 was VB - rather quick - from feeling labour pains at 4am to delivering him at 7.24am - and I ended up with only a 1st degree. Delivery was so different. DSa had been assisted - 2 attempts at vontouse, 1 at forceps - laboured a lot - and pushed on my back. I know a woman who had a 3rd deg tear (apparently she just found out her notes actually say 4th deg tear) after an episiotomy with her first. Her second was an unplanned home birth and resulted in another 3rd deg tear. Her 3rd was born in hospital and resulted in yet another 3rd deg tear. i had 3rd degree with ds1 and natural vb with ds2 with only a small episiotomy. No problems or hassles, nice and quick labour and easy recovery.

CS was not really even offered to me, i think the current thinking is that the risks associated with cs are worse than risks associated with episiotomy.

who did you see for your post natel check ups after 1st birth? I saw a mix of OB/MW/GP they all recommended c/s and although many people tried to put me off c/s with all the negative things like its a long recovery and you cant drive for 6weeks etc. they were not medical professionals, nor those that had been thru similar experiences. Dh was also supportive for c/s. as you have to consider not only the effects on you and baby but how they feel seeing your baby dragged from your body with a device that looks like some sort of 150o century torture item

Perhaps Talk to your GP about your feelings? Do you get to see an OB/GYNO? I find GPs are the ones that know your body best. I had shared care between GP/MW/OB and have been with the same GP since birth so felt happy to go with their decisions.

Im the same dont want to risk the damage to myself ever again.

Also I dont want to have the risk of forceps/ventouse delivery ever again. I dont like the risk to babys brain. I had one with my son and my MW is recommending a c-section this time round to minimize the potential of longer term damage. The other thing is too my son was an assisted delivery and was large and second babies tend to be bigger than first ones (not a rule but generally) so another reason my MW recommended a c-section. I had 3rd degree tear after #1, had a VB with #2 and a 2nd degree tear..... although I still tore, it was a much better recovery, and there is not reall guarentee that you will tear again vs. a definate serious recovery from a CS. Due with #3 in just over 6 weeks, and will again be having a VB..... hopefully in the water this time.

I had a c/s 2nd time around and it was the best ever. Check out the Pro-C/s chat topic under c/s support to read more. if you do a search on here there is a couple of other threads of this.

 

I had a 3rd degree tear with my first and #2 was a water birth with no tear at all.....so yes it is definitely possible. At no point did my MW think I would need to have a C/S. What I found helped was giving birth in water and not having any drugs (with #1 I had an epidural)  so I would feel when to push and basically trusted my MW when she told me NOT to push (which was the hardest thing ever but in the end was the main reason I didn't tear).

Not personally sorry, but my sister in law did, and had a great birth! He came out very quickly, and she had no problems. Is planning a home birth this time round. Sorry I don't have any more details, but I hope that's encouraging!

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of a VB after a 3rd degree tear. My DD was a ventouse delivery, resulting in a nasty tear that had to be reparied under general anaesthetic. My MW told me that I may find that I need to have a c-section with any subsequent births (but will be decided on at the time, taking into account position of baby etc etc) - just curious to hear if anyone has experience of delivering naturally after a 3rd degree, if it resulted in a similar level of tearing and if it was recommended to you to have a c-section - and any other details you feel like sharing!
