The nice studylink man who has helped me with all my stuff was happy when I said its another boy. If I didn't have such bad pregnancies and Rod wasn't so old (lol) I think my anti kids stance would be let down a little and I would have at least one more (so we would have 4) I always thought 4 was a nice mumber. But, having said that, dreams are free, and because I have been so sick this time, I am getting my tubes tied, and there will be no more. Well, that is no the only reason why there will be no more..but a big factor.

We are very lucky we are in a financial position to be able to have more if things were different, but i don't think it is about money, anyway. You are as rich as rich can be when you have a strong loving family unit.

As for the "so you will be hooping for a girl, then comment" I HATE THAT WITH A PASSION. people always look shocked when I reply (quite forcefully, I might add) "Oh, God no, I really want another boy." or "No we haven't found out what we are having, as I want another boy, and if I found out it was a girl, I owuld be devestated.." I will say the nice thing is that there are now 13 grandkids.. and when we do all get together, it's so fun. We have all had preggy buddies, at least one of our sister's has always been preg the same time as the other, hence we have lots of kids the same ages(and funnily enough, they are the same genders too each time) there's 2 11yr old boys, 2 9yr old girls, 2 4yr old boys, paris fits in here somewhere and then Bailey and Ayja are only 4 months apart.. then the newbie theo, who we see at family occasions cos his adoptive parents are more than welcome. I like it when we all get together.. and at least, and Robyn said, I have my middle older sister who i get on most closely with, but we all have someone who we are closer to. I don't think it matters whether youy plan on a big family or a small family, people will still have their opinions. When I was pregnant with Blaire all I ever got was "two kids are just such a good number, your not going to have any more are you?", now I'm getting "so are you planning on #3 yet?" and that is from the EXACT same people!!! Grrrr!
Me personally I came from a big family (5 brothers & 3 sisters) & my mum also cares for my two cousins as well since my Aunty died. My fiancee has a brother & a sister. I come from a bit of a mixed up family too, all up including step and half siblings there are 9 of us and now that we are older its great, but expensive too at christmas and birthdays (Ive told everyone no more babies in October!!!) I always wanted two children and so did hubby but now im having second thoughts, the big family is so great now and i see hubby with his only sibling and they hardly have any relationship at all specially if it wasnt for me, i would hate to think Kobe and Addison where the same. I don't understand why people assume you're wanting to try for the opposite gender child to the one you have already. We've got Ashlee, and while it would be nice to have a boy, a little sister for her would be just as perfect, if not better! I know some people want one of each, but we well and truly do not mind what gender our next one is.

I personally would love to have 4 kids as I come from 4 myself, and hubby from 3, BUT in all reality, we would seriously struggle financially (and finances are the only reason! I wish we would win lotto so I didn't have to go back to work lol). We're going to settle on 2 at the moment.

I don't think these comments are said to hurt you Deb, or people that say these things are nasty at all, I just think that people are looking out for you in a roundabout kinda way. They care for you and wouldn't want to watch you struggle, that's all. But ultimately, it is YOURS and hubby's decision, and if that's what you want, then you don't have to take anyone elses opinion into consideration at all.

ETA: I love the idea of Ashlee having loads of aunties and uncles (she's got 4 uncles and 1 aunty and once they get married, it will double!) so that in turn means loads of cousins (hopefully!). My mum and dad are both from 4 kid families and I've got loads of aunties uncles and cousins. I just love my big extended family, so it would be nice for the next generation to have that too. But we just can't afford, financially, to add too much to that next generation so just a couple will do lol

I always thought 2 was a good number - i am second youngest from a family of 6, but then, my family is no ordinary family - my older brother was 15 when i was born, mum had him when she was 19,   then she got married to my dad, had us 4 girls (there's 7 yrs between me and my next older sister, and 11 between me and my oldest sister) she then hooked up with my middle older sister's boyfriend (confusing yet?).. hence the reason that I have a younger sister. I think i have rather a skewed idea of families anyway cos of all that, but mum showed me the reverese side of the 'happy family' thing.. ie, she was alone with 3 teenage girls and a 5 yr old when dad left.. and proceeded to have another baby, on her own, who (not thru fault of mums..)is a reall shocker..(has now had 2 kiddies within a year of each other - which on it's own, would be fine, if she showed interest in them, but it's as if they were some other person's kids.. she will walk past bailey when he is crying and not even flinch) suffice to say, mum's 58, looking after 21 mth old with major med probs and wondering where it all went wrong. (rant over)

That said mikes and only child, and yeah i think for him, he did have a bit of a lonely existence, he had an imaginary friend named alex for a while when he was a kid. but he had it hard too. He never wanted any kids, till we had paris - then he only wanted 1, and we had Ayja.. so any mention of more kids for me is met with disgust.

some part of me wants more.. earlier this year i felt really strongly about it.. but he's off for the chop, in a few days time. so that's it.

Good on those who want to have big families - for those that come from a happily large familiy it can really make you realise how much love there is to share. but for me, my childhood wasn't the greatest mostly, so i am sticking with my 2 and concentrating on doing a great job with them - THAT i can handle.. i seriously don't think i could do any more than 3.

I think it's great that you want to have a large family Deb, I myself can probably only have a couple of children due to health problems so I think it is crap that people want to put you down for creating and loving a child.
You look at all the people that are child abusers these days and then look at the people that can't have any at all, it is just criminal!

Lewis comes from a family of four and I am an only child (apart from two step-sisters). we've agreed on three - mainly becasue thats all the kids you can fit in a car without getting a people mover. Mum still thinks we will have a multitude of kids - secretly i think she'd love it! They always wanted more children, but as i said before, mum got cancer and then they tried to adopt but it fell through. I always wanted a big family and read those crappy scholastic kiddy books about big families and....now this stays between us ladies....rented Cheaper by the Dozen...one and two. We have loosely talked about having 6 as well, but in reality we're just going to have one by one (hopefully) until it feels like the right time to stop. I have started avoiding the "how many" question from people who are just being nosey and just saying that we'd like at least one more.

I'm from a family of 10, the biggest question we get is "so are you going to try to beat your parents' record?" It irritates me so much because that is SO not the reason to have a big family. We are onlyt planning one too - and we get the same hassles. They go on about how the child will be spoilt and emotionally stunted - then I point out the fact that DH is an only. That often shuts them up.

My mum was the most supportive with having Andrew so young. She had me at 19 and now 3 kids later she was a nana at 43 and at 44 is a lady of luxury (of the no kids at home type) and can go out and enjoy her time and is still young enough to do so.

I would love to have a big family, but I know DH is not keen as he was the youngest of 4, but how knows time will tell.

Deb - just tell them you've inherited a whole pile of money. That'll shut them up. Or they'll get inquisitive and you can make up a whole pack of fun lies.

My Dad has a friend who has 8 kids. They are the most amazing family I have ever seen! They have never had a huge lot of money, but the kids are some of the most innovative hardworking people I have ever met. They know that they have to support the family and sacrifice for younger siblings etc. I can't say it would have been fun and games all the time but it definitely instills some great family values.

Most people say "So, I guess you are done after this one?" (meaning #3) and are surprised when we say "No, we want 5." I dont see how its any ones business how many kids you want. Like Paws said...if you can provide them with all the basics then you should have how ever many children you want. You and only you would know if you can afford them....so next time tell them to grow wings and buzz off.

I always wanted 2 because I come from a family of two. Hubby want three because he comes from a family of 3. When I was pregnant with Andrew I got a lot of the "can you afford it" comments. I was 22 in a relationship - yes we were renting our house (and still a lot of people are still renting with children), and both of us were working fulltime earning quite a bit for a couple in Palmerston North. I think a lot of mine was my age and I was the first of all of my friends my age to have a baby. This time around we have had no comments about the affording thing - even thou we are only on 1 income and we now own our home (more expensive). Why can't people just accept what people want to do. There are people out there that don't want to have children and I think quite often it is them saying "can you afford it". Grrrr don't ask. Well, we're already getting similar comments about having ONE!! And we are very established with our own house etc, and in a lot better financial state than most of our friends.
So I think it's just nosey people with nothing better to do than butt into your life!! Try and ignore them (and maybe they'll go away??)

We'd like to have a few kids, but we will see...

Daniel and I plan to have either 2 or 4 - i want an even number. My dad and both Daniel's parents come from 6 child families and daniel comes from a 6 child family and Daniels brother and sister both have three child families and are only in their early 20's so will probably have more.

Anyway we both come from big families. But the funny thing is that any family over two or more kids these days is a big family.

As for the nasty people who have an opinion - You don't have to tell them anything or just tell them it is non of their business. But my parents wanted 6, could only have 4 due to medical issues, and even then we were considered a 'big' family. But Mum was so keen on having more that they even fostered a little girl for a while when I was quite young.

If you guys want a big family and can provide them with everything they need (love, time and all the other basics), then what business is it of anyone else's?? Only you guys know what you can manage and what you can afford.

It's slighty different but the comment about kids being expensive reminds me of the number of times that I got similar comments from that difficult woman at work. She would often make comments questioning if we could really afford something I had bought. It bugged the hell out of me becuase what the heck does she know of our financial situation? But I digress.

We've talked about having 3 though according to some articles I've read recently even that is considered a big family by many! But hey if we can afford it, want it, and can provide then we'll go for it and people can mind thier own business! (and I'm sleep deprived enough to merrily tell someone that too! )

Well this has been a topic I have been thinking about alot lately. I am so sick to death of people having comment's about how many kid's I want hubby and I are planning for 6 and everytime someone asks and I tell them we get comment's like" you have no idea what you are in for" or "you can't afford that kids are too expencive"
