Emmi they can do it when you have a c/s, my first was c/s and had it collected. My friend had two emergency c/s and they still collected it for her babies too.

The $500 is for the kit, paying the person that does the collection and the transport fee that's why you don't get it back, even if you don't use the kit they can't then give it to someone else.

crazycass I'm confused about the if you've had a natural birth they can't collect it comment. I think that in most cases the risks associated with cord banking far outweigh the possible benefits.

Yea I think its a bit rude that if for no reason or fault of your own no matter what you loose the $500 deposit... Esp when if you've had a natural birth they can't get the 25ml that they need

I looked into it with DD, but the price put me off, and decided to do the delayed cord clamping. I was going to do this, but then I got talking to a group of people elsewhere and heard another case againt it. I think I'll go with delayed cord clamping instead. The baby needs the blood and they're less likely to wind up anaemic.

I, too, see cord banking as a type of insurance policy and wouldn't urge someone against it. Hi Guys

Just wondering what everyone's opinions are regarding cord banking? I asked my MW about it last visit, she said it was really common in Chch but now that she's in Rotorua it doesn't happen that often, which she's put down to the cost ($2900 to start with then $250 per year after that)....

I agree the cost is HUGE, but we can make sure we have the cash should we choose to go ahead. We have no serious illnesses in the family, but I see it like an 'insurance policy' I guess.
