And the MW's around here are used to HB's a lot more than in the city.

The doc is a 45 minute drive, hospital 2.5hrs. DS was the first baby in a few years to be born past due, nearly everyone goes early hence the accidental home births. There is a family of sherpa's from nepal, her eldest son was born halfway up a mountain, she was going for a run up the stairs to hurry him along apparently!

But she knew I was going to come quick, (her longest labour with #1 was 4 hours, and I was baby #4) so had been popping into the maternity centre a few times for monitoring etc.... The day I was born was the day my grandfather walked in, slammed her suitcase down and said "this is the LAST day I am bringing her in here, she is NOT leaving until she has this baby!" ...... So he was getting a bit grumpy after a few false starts

Buut anyways, I was born on Mums 3rd contraction.... Luckily in the maternity centre. And Dad of course wasn't there (there was no way he would have made it in time) Which was quick lucky, cos if he had stayed home, mum would have still been at home, and I had the cord wrapped around my neck which even made the nurse panic! Which Dad wouldn't have coped with.. But yup. Nearly could have been a homebirth!

By the time the midwife believed I was in labour and turned up I was fully dilated. The funny thing was that I had mentally prepared myself for delivery at home or in the car so perhaps there was some intuition there - not sure. It didn't phase me at the time, or afterwards though I was a bit annoyed that the midwife hadn't listened to me insisting that I was ready to go to hospital.

Second time I opted for hospital but baby was born about 6 minutes after arriving there and labour all up was about an hour. I opted for hospital because although I thought the homebirth was great (super relaxed) I still liked the idea of being in the right place in the event of an emergency. And actually, because no one expected our second to be born so quickly the midwife pressed the emergency bell and the room was suddenly flooded with people just in case of haemmorrage etc etc.

If we have a third I'm not sure what I would do. I would possibly opt for home and calling an ambulance as well as the midwive as soon as I knew I was in labour.

The only birthing unit is around 45-50 minutes away. Lets just say my son entered the world extremely fast, went from having a crap to sudden contractions that were 2 minutes apart and lasting 20 seconds each. By the time my midwife actually listened to us that I was in fact in labour and mum managed to bundle me into the car we made it 5 minutes into our 45-50minute trip. Mum made the decision to turn around and take me to the local clinic. He was delivered by my mum and a nurse in the local clinic/old folks home within 5 mins of arriving. Because I laboured so quickly I think if I ever have another baby that I will just opt for home birth (plus the car ride when in labour is terrible!!!!)
