Lol Delli! My DH has resigned himself to the fact that grocery shopping is now his job. He is way better at it than me - he spends less as he can stick to the list whereas I always seem to find things we 'need'. Plus he is much quicker. Oh and I'm pregnant, so I'm far too tired to do it in the evenings

Yep, totally depends on what you do day to day I guess. I do the carrier and stroller combo rather than a double buggy. But. I don't do town. Hardly ever go. We live in the country and I've just never been much of a town person. When we do go I either do the carrier/stroller combo or carrier and Jude walks. But I hold his hand - he doesn't hold mine. It's not an option to not hold it. If he has a tantrum and decides he doesn't want to hold it - I'll be one of "those" woman you see dragging their toddler by the arm through the shops to the car (But town semi-terrifies me with small children! I'm much more relaxed on the farm or at a park etc where Jude can do his own thing and ride his bike or run around )

Anyway, to answer your original question. Only extra we got was a carseat. One thing I wish I had gotten that you may already have anyway was a baby monitor. Didn't need it with Jude as we were living in town and had a small house but with Willem I wanted one as Jude always wanted to go outside and play in the sandpit etc away from Willem's room where he was sleeping. I still wanted to be able to hear him cry. But never got around to getting one because of the aforementioned not doing town business. Other things that are handy at the moment but not necessary at all - a runner bike for the older child and we also find the iPod a great distraction for the older child when feeding etc (). In the early days also when Jude was getting used to another baby taking up some of his time - we designated one of his soft toys as his "baby" when changing Willem and he would wipe and change his baby at the same time so that he wasn't getting annoyed with the lack of attention. So, if you haven't already got a suitable soft toy or doll you can use, I would suggest one of those too. (Lol, funny that it is mostly all stuff for the elder child I'm suggesting!).

supermarket shopping isn't too bad (I do it with a 2 year old and 7month old) cos they have those trolleys that have a toddler seat and an infant seat next to it.

Thanks for all the replys everyone, personally I wont be going shopping etc with two youngins ill be waiting till late night shopping or the weekends when DH can help, I find taking one baby shopping hard enough especially since the pram can hardley fit through some of the shops anyway! I think a double pram may just be too rediculous at the shops! Plus DD will be in day care 3 mornings a week so cn do my walking then.

bookwyrm you'll find you'll get firmer about saying "no, walk" and he'll get more agreable about doing it as you get a bigger and bigger bump so the carrying thing gets more uncomfy for both of you

I'm amused by quite how much of a debate this has become. For what it's worth, I'm planning a stretchy wrap for bub on my front and the manduca for DD on my back but that's mostly on the basis that DD has hated the pram her whole life. If this one loves it, I might wear DD and put bub in the pram, or seeing as DD is much better in the pram when her ears are ok, she might get the odd pram ride too. But if I find I want both of them in a pram, I'm just planning on jumping on TM and getting one second hand. I don't think it'll be an urgent "need pram this minute" situation, so I'll wait and see if that's going to be what I need/want before I shell out the money. I could have saved myself the $300 I spent on DD's pram, that's for sure!

We will have a similar gap to the OP, and my purchases thus far have been a second manduca, another carseat, a baby hammock in the hope this one might actually sleep one day, a decent baby monitor so I can have DD firmly shut out of the baby's sleep area but still hear bub, and a quad bike for my farmlet - cos it's getting damn hard work carting DD, the belly AND the calf/pig/chook food etc!

We moved DD into a single bed at 16 months and it was fine. We do keep a single mattress on the floor beside her bed because she has frequent ear problems and tends to fall out of bed a lot when they flare up. I will have a four year gap between mine when our second is born in February. A pram is really out of the question for DS aged 4. I do have a baby bjorn, but may look into a slip / wrap while bubs is tiny. I will invest in a new pram as our old one has been lent out that many times that its a bit screwy now.

My son still wants to be carried everywhere, it is a nightmare. ^^ What she said... walking around is one thing, if you want to walk/run to loose baby weigth then baby wearing isnt ideal.

I guess we all have different day to day lives so we all have different needs.

I love heading out the mall on a rainy day, we can be there all day. We go for coffee, wander around and window shop, play in the indoor play areas, have some lunch, do more window shopping, more playing the indoor play areas... No way no how could I do that without a double.. Well I could now, nearly a year on but I am still suffering with pain in my scar so carrying either of my kids (who roughly weigh the same) after a few hours starts to hurt.

Also I found that with my closer gap, chances are they would both want to nap when we were out... I not quite mastered tandem wearing for long periods lol

I think grabbing a second double of tm is a great idea... you will likely get back what you paid for it and then you are covered.

I guess if you dont go out and about for long periods and you dont plan on exercising during the day by walking/running then you most likely wont need a double...

Yeah.... it's fantastic to have firm ideas about what you are going to do, sure beats fly by the crotch of your undies but in my experience (public health) high (and often unrealistic) expectations not only of yourself but of your children too often leads to anxiety, depression, anger and all those other nasty roadblocks. Stating them so firmly also means it's much much harder to (and then less likely that you will) ask for help because you feel like a "failure".

We have a double buggy and while I think we could have survived without it, it has been awesome for walking (for exercise I mean). Shopping etc, we use the shopping carts with double seats, and I now wear baby in the manduca and our toddler walks.
BUT when baby is newborn and you're recovering from birth and being exhausted (um cos you will be lol) , a double buggy will come in really handy. I'd be inclined to pick up one on TM in good 2nd hand nick and then flick it on once you're done. I'm the same ad freckle. We got a double buggy, well abuggy with a toddler seat, and he hated it ! Wouldn't sleep in there and cried the whole time. Lol so I just wore him everywhere. I'm not brave enough to take the kids shopping lolbut I usedtogo for big walks for exercise wearing ds. You just have to dress appropriately and usually I'd walk to a park, let dd play, feed ds then head back.

haha well I'm the opposite to you guys, I totally intended on buying the doubles kit for our stroller but I found it so much easier to have DD3 in the Mei Tai or Moby. In fact until the last few weeks DD3 hadn't been in the stroller cos she just seemed too little lol... So going for big walks DD2 went in the stroller and DD3 was carried. I have to agree... I love wearing my kiddies but jeepers heck no.

We often go out and about running errands that will have us out for several hours. Sometimes its just not practical to be wearing them!

Personally I found my double to be a godsend... I quite frankly would not have survived without it!

Theres over 3 years between my two and I still use my pram and doubles kit and i used it daily for the first 3-4 months at least. It depends on your lifestyle. I wanted to get out and exercise. If you plan on doing that then theres no way in hell I'd wear a baby. Running with a baby attached doesn't work .. or long distance walks (where you are trying to exercise) also doesn't work.. you over heat yourself and baby and get saturated in sweat. Also going clothes shopping etc with a baby attached is dificult if you wanna try things on. Yes you can take baby off but if its anything like mine he will crawl underneath the doors of the changing room.

I do have an ergo which I use a lot. BUT i also use my pram alot. Ty walks too(he was running by the time she was born) ,but stuff trying to catch up to a running 2 year old while running with a baby strapped to you,or having the toddler have a tantrum because HE wants to be carried too been there done that,not so fun
Thats my experience though,its different for everyone,for some people it works having the carriers,others like myself,found it worked better having them in the pram.

I have to agree with kelly. I had thoughts of not bothering with a double pram and just using a sling, but I am so glad I didn't! In the end it was so much easier to have both kids in the buggy, especially with having a busy toddler running around.   We only used the sling when we couldn't use the buggy for some reason - ie. farm parks, bush walks etc. I had a funny feeling that my daughter would want to be in a buggy if the baby was and was so right. We ended up with an inline P&T and are still using it for both kids now

Oh and apart from the double buggy, I only really bought a sling, car seat (decided to upgrade my daughters to the toddler seat to save expense down the track) and some new nappies, clothes since we had a boy second time around. We did the same as you are intending and put our daughter into a bed with no hassles at just over 18 months. I just put a side rail up and kept her in her sleeping bag :). I have a moby wrap that I got with Tyler and I had all these notions of only needing that when the baby came along.
So glad I got a double buggy kit,I NEVER use my Moby now,in fact I need to sell it,everytime I tried to put it on,Ty would get jealous of the baby being so close to me and would want me to pick him up,in the end,having them both in the buggy was a god send.

We are needing to buy:

Replacement bibs, facecloths, miracle blankets & sleeping bag (will use DS' as the backup)

Carseat once bubs has outgrown the capsule

Manduca & will keep single pram

New playgym as the last one I got was really cheap and kind of fell apart - going for a wooden mocka one this time

Clothes! New bubba is going to be born in winter (and don't know if same sex) and DS is a summer baby.

Oh and might buy a bumbo or mobile feeding chair this time around, would have made life much easier with DS when feeding him out

Drawers, bookcase & single bed for DS (new bubba will have cot & DS' room furniture)

Sounds like a bit, but nowhere what it was like the first time around!

I have 21months between mine,we bought another cot,(older baby was in it for at least 3months when his sister arrived)

The things that I think I need to replace are baby towels, bibs, face cloths, swaddling muslins, things that have had a bit of use and a bit manky looking now. Also bottles & teats in various sizes, if required, oh and a some of the cot sheets are a bit worn and won't last another baby, so will replace some of those.

My DD would never use a safety sleep she'd throw a fit! Shes a bit like me and moves alot in bed lol

We should be good re car, I only have a sedan but we dont need to fit anything else in, just another baby! As for the chest freezer, yah already have one!

I think we pretty much sorted, just need to find out the sex, so I can figure out whether we need to get rid of the girls clothes and replace them with boys clothes!

I had to put my oldest in a bed at 15 months because he could climb out of his cot. I used a safety sleep to keep him in. But I did have to use several safety pins and stap him in tight lol. He was a master at getting out if it. I'm another one who is going to put the new baby in the manduca and have DD remain in the stroller. It's not worth buying the toddler seat for her as she will probably be too heavy for it by the time baby #2 comes.

I am not buying anything for this baby, we have a capsule from the first baby that we will use again, so a second carseat doesn't need to be purchased for a while. We also have a moses basket and a bassinet, and everything else a newborn needs.

This is a very stress free pregnancy indeed. He was awesome, I have him in a sleeping bag and that seems to make him think he can't get out of bed with it on, so always waits for me.
We do have him in a 3/4 bed (between and king single and double) which means he can't accidently roll out, but I can also hop in and spend the night with him. A manduca is a soft structured carrier that you could use with both baby and toddler.

#2 is arriving very soon for us. DD isn't in a bed and we have decided to wait until after bubs is born to look at a second cot. We'll have a few months while bubs is in the .oses basket. Other than that we have brought a car seat, more mcns, some clothes, another mirror for the car. We already have a doubles kit for our pram and I have a manduca.

I have a double for my two - 2 years and 2 months apart - its awesome to go for a walk and if it werent side by side it would be better for shopping but I dont often take them both anyway
I think the thing is think 6 to 12 months after baby is born - will your big girl be happy to walk then

Knowing what I know now - I would invest in a manduca for baby and keep the buggy for the big one - once Baby is big enough - a double stroller is super handy for walks etc and not so expensive or bulky - but by then you may have seen your daughter is happy to walk everywhere

Yeah my issue with the pram is DD will only be 22 months old so just need to figure out whether she'll still need one?

as for sleeping we have gotten DD her big girls bed and we going to give it to her for christmas, it'll be summer so I firgure if she ends up sleeping on the floor (lol) its not going to be a huge issue.

Probably need to get more re-usable nappies as well!
