was very lucky and pretty much only had to sneeze with my son! was induced, and 8 hours later think i pushed for literally a minute and had him. wow Sharlene you poor thing that must have been horrible!!
with my DD it was a 9 hour active labour (24 hours from first contraction) 30 mins pushing, no pain relief. that was plenty long enough for me! i had a water birth and i really feel that being in the water made it so much better than if i was on "dry land" i was so relaxed and got less tired not having to hold up my own weight as much i reckon..(tho DD is my first so i actually dont have anything to compare it to lol its just my theory..)but i only had one graze (internal) and 2 stitches from it all so count myself extremely lucky- i dont know what i would have done if it had of ended up 2 hours or something...shudder to think!

It will be. But I reckon, you should definitely get some raspberry leaf tablets. They helped a lot!

I had just as crappy experience with Sophie, as you did with Seth. With #1, I have no idea! I was very mad at the midwife for not giving me anymore epidural, so I wasn't really paying attention. Just demanding I get some more epidural.

It was a South African surgeon at Wellington hospital who said those things to me. Apparently she doesn't work there anymore though, which is very good in my opinion because I may be going back there in January.

That's not nice about your FIL either. I was pushing for 13 mins, was in active labour for 8 hours (was very active all throughout which kept things moving very quickly. It took me just under 2hrs. An hr of that was after you could see her hair coming out. I had an episiotomy and she was born in under 2 mins. My peritineum never thinned out so she had no hope. I got a 3rd degree tear, which was expected because of my peritineum. Next time as soon as she crowns I want an episiotomy if my peritineum hasnt thinned. I also was 'that woman' but not at the hospital I was at home. Thankfully the neighbours who I dont know very well have never said anything. Three hours 9 minutes. A surgeon popped her head in part way through to see if I needed any assistance...after asking me why I was crying and making so much noise, after which I replied "because it hurts!" she tells me that she gave birth to 5 children without pain relief. Woo hoo for her! Grrr! She then tells me to keep pushing and leaves. Another surgeon comes in close to three hours and decides that this baby "really needs to come out" no s**t lol! So after an epistiotomy, ventouse and a whole lot of damage, my son was born.

Mine was around 1 hour and then they started to get concerned as baby's heart rate was dropping and not coming back up fast enough.. 1st child took 2 hours 15 minutes, my contractions stopped and I was in no mood to push when I didn't have one. He finally came out thou and that is what mattered.

2nd child took 48 minutes.

#1 approx 35 minutes with epidural, no assistance. He'd been stuck for ages and I was being prepped for a c-section when all of a sudden he presented lol we also had issues with his HB dropping but he came down so fast I couldn't go into theatre (TG!) and because of labour trauma they were wary of intervening so no forceps or anything yay! And he was perfect
#2 approx 10 minutes with epidural, no assistance except for MW popping a bubble of waters that had somehow not been broken earlier and was making it harder for him to be pushed out. Delli, same here, contractions lost their pain once the ring of fire started with #1, but with #2 the contractions were frikkin' painful and close together, probably why I pushed her out so fast, to get rid of that pain! Hey, at least I didn't notice the ring of fire part!
I was also 'that' woman with #2, quite embarrassing knowing that there was a young tradesman building something right outside the door. I have to admit though - second time around the pushing stage seemed way more intense than the first time around even though it was so much shorter. First time it seemed as if the pain from the contractions subsided when I got to the pushing stage and I was really able to concentrate on what I was doing and do it in silence except for a grunt or two (lol!). Second time, the pain did not stop at the pushing stage, everything was VERY intense and I was THAT woman you hear in the maternity ward - the one who sounds like she is being tortured in the worst possible way. First DS - 2 hours before they intervened with a ventouse and out he popped.

Second DS - pushed for 30 minutes but he would not come down so whisked away for c-section. Just as well, he was 11lb 7oz with 38cm head. monkey I can't be certain but I my MW said my VBAC would be a lot easier seeing as I had got to 10cm and started to push last time. Gosh the second baby really does seem to come quicker, it's not just a myth! I am very happy to hear of some of these 3-5 minute pushing times!

Sorry to hijack your post Bowie, but does anyone know the answer to this? I'm SO glad to hear second time is usually so much shorter!

I took 2 hours, staff were on standby for a c-section and my Ob said if I didn't get her out with that last push she was going to use forceps. I ended up with an episiotomy and still got 3rd degree tears. Please please please don't let that happen this time! First one was about 25mins on my back with instructions from MW on how to push.

Second one was 11 mins, on my left side, pushing whenever and however I felt. She got shoulder dysocia (?) and had to be pulled for the last 30 - 60 seconds.

I have an old friend who took 4 hours to push her bub out. I don't know the details though, but I know she didn't need stitches. DD1-bout 45 minutes from what I recall of the hospital notes that I no longer have...didn't feel that long though

DS-im guessing it was about 8-10 minutes,if that

DD2-bout 10minutes or less,but felt longer,and felt like I was giving birth to a really oddly shaped head,she didn't though.

I pushed for 2 hours 10 minutes. In the end they did an episiotomy and she was out within about 10 minutes after that. Poor DD had been so stuck that she had a terribly purple swollen head for days and days afterwards

I was flat on my back too bowie because DD was prem and had to have continuous monitoring. Way to start a thread and never come back to it...good to hear i wasnt the only one with a marathon push session. I wonder if it does vary hospital to hospital/doctor to doctor then...i never had an OB until the stitch up at the end and my midwife is all old school (over 20 years as a midwife) so had probably seen it a million times before. Pleased i got him out myself (and drug free!). Probably didnt help that the little bugger had a 42cm head circumfrence and was born with hands up. Probably didnt help i was flat on my back for the last bit, and he was prosterior and born that way. They tell me it was an hour but I don't believe them - it felt like much longer. There was a bit before that where I was still completely numb from the epidural and I couldn't feel to push, so I was pushing very hard, but not efficiently. I had to take a break until it wore off and I could start pushing in earnest. Honestly, the pushing was a pretty terrible experience. She came out with her hand on her face and her cord wrapped around her arm (not affecting oxygen supply - just made her more of an awkward shape!). Can't imagine how some of you went for three hours.

3.5 hours for twin 1, finally out only after an epsiotomy and forceps. Then twin 2 was out in 3 pushes.

(Induced labour with contractions that never got more than 6 mins apart, hideous high dose of epidural so I had no clue what I was doing and twin 2 had gotten distressed so I had to start pushing before it was time.)

I pushed for just over 2hrs with DS - OB was just threatening me with intervention and I got a fright and tried extra hard - luckily it worked and I didn't have to find out what he was going ot do next!

DD was 2 pushes in 2 minutes and she was out - completely different experience and much more empowering (and easier to recover from)

ETA: I was induced with both with a drip

I think I pushed for 1.5-2hrs and then DS was a ventouse delivery...DS' heart rate was dropping during contractions and I was exhausted from being given a sleeping pill about 4 hours before I was fully dilated and ready to push - don't think the hospital midwives expected my induction to progress quite so quickly!
With the ventouse, had I known I needed to push 'that' hard I probably could've got him out on my own but I wasn't pushing nearly hard enough prior to the assisted delivery.

I just checked my notes cos I remember it felt like forever.. 1 hour 42 minutes. I pushed for 1 hours and 8 minutes. I was told towards the end that I had to get her out in x amount of pushes because MW could see meconium and everytime I had a contraction her heart rate dropped. I was so tired by the end of it that we were both suggesting csection. Anyway once her head was out the mw pretty much just pulled her out for me. i know my MW did do notes, but she had her own booklet or something to write them in, she didn't really use my pink book too much at all throughout my pregnancy. I have contacted her office to see if I can get a copy of the notes sent to me. Would be especially interesting to see these details now that I have a second on the way. And would be interesting to see if my recollection of it all was accurate

Wow over 2 hours sounds like hard work.
Mine was an hour but would have probably been quicker if I wasn't so numb from the epidural.
I have heard that as long as baby is doing fine, you still have the energy & progress is being made they leave you for a good few hours before considering intervention.

So good to hear second time around is usually much quicker, that pushing is hard work.

55 mins with my second, the OB on duty said he only wanted me to push for 30 mins and then he wanted to intervene with a c-section (he was the OB that did my crash c-section the year before and remembered me so I think he was concerned given my history) but I had made it abundantly clear to my MW that I didn't want a c-section so I kept going and thankfully the OB got caught up and didn't come back until she was just about out (after an episiotomy). To be honest, knowing that if he came back he'd make me have a c-section gave me the extra oomph to push her out

I pushed for around 3 hours on and off, because she was stuck.

1hr 53 mins! I knew it was a long time but didn't realise that it took others soooo much quicker lol. I didn't need forceps or anything though thank god. Oh. Mine was about 3 hours!
We both suffered for it though, thankfully her only short term but me for the rest of my life!
I blame the hospital entirely - they should have sent me for an emergency C-Section far earlier than they did. I had an independant midwife who is fantastic but once she calls the DRs in she has absolutely no say (Middlemore). One DR poked his head in and had a very quick look, then said to leave me pushing. Great aye!
Had to have an EC/S for DD2.

ETA: Oh and she was born completely purple from not breathing

I was pushing for about 2 and a half hours as well Bowie. Intervention was never mentioned. It was hard going and very tiring but I guess I was making progress so intervention wasn't needed and bubs was fine. Mine was just shy of 2 hours but I had difficult circumstances. I'd had an epidural gone wrong, pethadine, and syntocin all leading to me having no feeling from the waist down, I couldn't feel when to push or how I was pushing.

15 mins for both My mw did mention for 1st timers it cn be about 2 hours . Bentley was out in 50 minutes, but my time perception was pretty warped from pretty much the start of my labour - couldn't understand why Joe was already bored of the bath after ten minutes, turned out it'd been two hours.

It'll be written in your notes under stage 2 labour.

First one was 22 mins & 2nd was 8 mins.

My first is down as 50 mins but I was feeling pushy a good 10-20 mins before then but my midwife hadn't arrived yet.

2nd I'm honestly not sure, I pushed her out in 3-4 contractions and labour at the hospital was only 1/2 an hour all up. I'd say 5-10 mins.

With #1 i pushed for 1hr 45mins all up. It ended up being a ventouse delivery as i was exhausted. Not sure when they started using the ventouse, would have to find my notes.

#2 was only 15mins. I've heard 2 hours is the time limit for first-time labours from quite a few people, but that might just be in our DHB? Daniel - about an hour. I was on a time limit with him because his heart rate would plummet with each contraction so I either had to push him out or get a c/s. He flew out once I had an episitomy.

I've heard of huge variations - from round about two hours or more like you to 15 mins like me (I did want to push a bit earlier, but as I wasn't at the birthing centre at that point I was trying to hold the urge in). Just been having a flick through my hospital notes - i was actively pushing for 2hrs 35minutes. Seems excessively long - have quite a few friends with babies who have told me they pushed for 20minutes then they intervened, and one that pushed for 45 minutes and was told if she didnt get the baby out by 60minutes pushing she would have to have a c-section. I am curious if they have warped memories of the birth, if the fact i had an independent midwife and they all used hospital midwifes made a difference, or because i'd made such a big deal about wanting no intervention like forceps in my birth plan. It has even been said to me that hospital policy was that if no progress was made after 30 minutes actively pushing then they would intervene in some way.

Anyone else push for such a long time with no intervention//know anything re: the time youre 'allowed' to push for?
