You can spend as much or as little as you like really - either all new or all borrowed from friends or anything in between! And what you need depends very much on how you actually end up parenting (which may not always be the way you think you will!).

Initially, baby needs somewhere to sleep (this can be a hammock/bassinet/cot/your bed), nappies of some kind, some clothes (including woolies and hats), a carseat of some sort assuming you have a car, and it can be useful to have a way of carting baby around with you (for me, a stretchy wrap was a godsend, the pram was barely used for the first year).

Jem I totally think it depends on the family. What we spent was 3 times what a friend of ours spent but then nothing compared to my boss & his wife! When I did my budget for what we needed for DS1, I wrote down everything I could possibly think of, and then deleted a few things that I heard I could do without and that just couldn't fit into the budgegt. I allocated a price and then found a total that we could afford. Then anything that we got on sale (which was just about everything - I shopped around) was a bonus! I was a bit of an organised freak

huggies newborn are the best fit if bubs born on small side
stretch n grows with all them domes or domes in the back are a pain at 3am, go with the modern gorgeous gowns at night until baby sleeps thru the night
capsule/base/click it snap & go wheels

Where do I start! Get lots of stretch and gro/jumpsuits but try to find ones with zips because domes/buttons are useless esp. when your half asleep and the baby wont stop moving lol

merino vests are really good as well. and you can never have too many bibs either :)
