KiwiL your son sounds almost the same as my almost 9 month old, in fact I came on here to see if there was a similar topic but not expecting there to be one almost identical.  He loves to feed himself so am trying to give him as much finger foods as possible although with only 2 teeth (which aren't all the way through) he doesn't actually chew through a lot.  I also have found he will eat lots of yoghurt but other food on the spoon, he spits most back out so like you I am very frustrated.  I am still offering him milk before solids at the moment but am about to change at the end of the month which means he will get one less milk feed a day so am really hoping that less milk will make him hungrier!  Today I reckon he probably only ate about 3 spoonfuls of solids, the rest got spat back out and once he gets upset I give up as this is usually when he stops opening his mouth anyway.  ]]> Thu, 13 Oct 2011 21:16:23 +0000 https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40728&PID=1398475&title=baby-disinterested-in-solids#1398475 https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40728&PID=1397706&title=baby-disinterested-in-solids#1397706 Author: mummymonster

I'm going to say try not to worry too
My DS1 was a huge happy eater at 12mths. Got sick, got better again but had lost his interest in food. This was also about the time he discovered walking.
He lost his chub
Then all of a sudden at about 15mths we were out at a cafe, he started eating wedges - to our surprise he ate and ate and ate. That was it, he was back into eating again - go figure.

Now he'll have hungry days, and not so hungry days and I just try to go with the flow.

Oh, yeah and he would not eat pizza - at all. Then we had friends over with 2 other kids, had pizza (just this week). He watched them eating pizza for about 5min then joined in. I asked their mum if I could borrow them for brocolli training - lol.

Thanks for the tips guys. He generally eats the same food we eat so he is watching us and his brother - certainly seeing his brother eat helps at times. And yes, ripping the food into teeny tiny bits often helps!

He's unwell again and I think teeth are on the way so I expect this to continue for a while. It's such a pity the dairy makes him blocked up.

I wouldn't really be at all concerned but before long my boobs are not going to be available to him during the day and he will have to eat food. Oh and I have noticed that bubs is much better about eating things if they are around the size of a pea. I have been cutting all foods into tiny pieces for him.
Anything about the size of a bean has been tossed over the side, but the cut up small bits of bean go in his mouth

Are you trying to feed him too much or too often?
My 11 month old will throw stuff of the table when he is bored or not hungry. As soon as he does I put it all away, there is no point in persevering. Maybe he doesn't want as much food as you think he should have, but he is fine.

There is no point in trying to feed a baby that doesn't want food, it just ends in tears.

Is he moving about much, once he starts expending lots of energy he will probably be hungrier, and bm might not cut it as much. Is he teething?

My 11 month old has been asking for more bfs in the last few weeks, I have been going with it and only in the last week or so has his appetite started picking up.

Do you think he's associating being sick with foods he ate?

So maybe you could try and show him it's ok to eat? Ie eat some yourself & then get him to have a bite?

What Mama T said. At 21 mnths ds is still not always the biggest eater. The best thimg you can do is relax and just go with it. Some days when he's teething he has othing but bm. Also maybe try more food he can eat himself rather than trying to feed him. Try not to worry (easier said than done I know). My son didn't start actually having solids till about 9/10months, but never more than the odd bite of something, then suddenly around 18months had a huge appetite, although he still has periods where he is completely disinterested in food.
Your boy is still having milk, which is still the most important thing and will be meeting his nutritional needs.
You can't force them to eat, just offer something at each meal you know he'll try and introduce the odd new food.

KiwiL. I don't have any advice but I hope he starts eating more again soon as I can imagine this is hard for you. Have you talked to Plunket as sometimes they can have good advice. I've found the Karitane Nurse Nicola helpful with some things with my son. I don't know if this post is asking for advice or just a vent.

I am very frustrated with my 11 month old! I am having a real problem getting him eating solids. He rejects most things.

We had an awesome start and he was really into it until about 8 months when he got really sick and didn't eat for about a month. He slowly bounced back but now he is super, super fussy. Even when he is starving he refuses to try most things. He cries and throws it off the highchair.

He will eat TONS of yoghurt if I let him, but it makes him constipated so I have to limit it. He also loves peas and cheese. Will nibble crackers. Will nibble apples. And that's about it. He absolutely refuses to eat bread/toast even though he used to love it. Yoghurt is the only thing he will accept from a spoon.

It's totally doing my head in. I had all sorts of problems with my first boy, but where that was a medical issue this seems more like a willingness issue. I don't really know what to do! I am going back to work in a couple of months and am worried he won't eat.

He's breastfed at the moment, won't take a cup or bottle (a whole other story) and he will hold out for the breast. I would have thought when he was *really* hungry he would give food a go.
