Author: Pugglesworth
Subject: 40818
Posted: 27 October 2012 at 9:01am

Hi - glad to hear everyones babies are still doing well. We are doing great and really enjoying our baby. She looks so grown up now and is starting to get a little personality.

We are trying to wean Brooklyn out of her sleep sack at the moment. Took one arm out last week and took the other arm out last night (icy hands when she wakes up but her body and head are still warm enough and the room is warm too). She still sleeps about the same length of time (8-10 hours for her first time sleep), but it takes her much longer to get to sleep (and half the time involves me holding her arm down so she stops hitting herself in the face while settling), and she seems to stir a lot more as her arms waive occasionally and wake her up (luckily she can usually fall back to sleep though). Anyway, I much prefer her sleeping and settling in her wrap but she has started to roll, is over 4 months old (I've read this is a good time to stop), and we are coming into summer warmth, so I think it's best she stops using it now. Anyone else had problems or any good ideas weaning out of sleep sack/wrap with waving arms?

Also, just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for sleeping bags as the baby shops don't seem to have a good selection and there are a lot to choose from online, but you don't get to see them first. She tends to edge out from under her blanket most of the time so I thinks she's going to be one of those babies who need a sleeping bag to keep warm. I saw a good review of merino kids go go bag but it is very expensive (happy to spend the money if others think it's worth it though).

Look forward to some tips

    Author: koromiko
Subject: 40818
Posted: 21 October 2012 at 9:05am

Congratulations Third Time Lucky! Lucky indeed. What a cute name :) So exciting to still be getting baby news on here!

I have been thinking about how it is almost a year since I found out I was pregnant. What an amazing year it has been... I still can't believe it sometimes. Our little sweetpea is so smiley and wriggly. Yesterday the monitor went off to say there was no movement in the cot. We have the sensor pad near to the end where we put her. Anyway I rushed in and found her down towards the other end and lying across the cot instead of lengthwise, giving me a big grin! She is only wearing her pavlik harness at night now, but for the first half of the day it's like she is wearing an invisible one.

I have also been thinking about the other people who used to post on this page... I tried searching for Emilzz, Deb and Jessm. I hope that their journey has brought them/will bring them happiness.

Also wondering what has happened to the people who stopped updating and we don't know if they are out there somewhere with cute little babies but don't have the time to post in forums!!

Anyway, K is down for her first nap of the day, I should have a shower and get organised.

Glad everything is going ok so far. The newborn stage initially seems to last forever but then suddenly they're out of it and you wonder where the time has gone!

Lorna- we're on 1 sleep cycle naps here too, but my little one HATES the capsule and basically screams in it everytime so no chance of her sleeping in the car. Hope your little girl has a happy 2nd birthday :)

Hope those boobs are ok Puggles, once it starts it can get nasty pretty quickly, but can fix up quite quickly too. Hope the doc was of some help.

We got our csection date today - 11 Oct!! Only 5 weeks and 3 days away, NOW it starts to get pretty real eh!!! Am thinking that finishing 28 Sept is probably a bit late and for what? So someone can make more money from my exhausted efforts? I didn't expect it to be so early, but they brought if forward a few more days because I'm So Old. Fine with me, and DP very happy it's happening in his school holidays. Great for me actually, b/c I might actually be at home and not in hosp for the two weeks he has off. We really should think about a name.... Otherwise it will be Jim Drvic lolol

I don't feel ready, and I have a lot of things to do here, but I just can't quite bring myself to tell work I'm finishing earlier than expected. I must toughen up, I don't want to spend the last few days of my pregnancy like a blue-arsed fly eh...
Author: kernowexile
Subject: 40818
Posted: 03 September 2012 at 3:25pm

Hello! We're still here, just normally reading and running as this site doesn't work on the iphone.

This time 7weeks ago I was pushing the wee girl out! - where did the time go?!!

Those of you who want to be pregnant again make me laugh. I hated it!! I hated being fat, and then being told 'you're not fat, you're pregnant'! I am now hating the fact the inital weight came off quickly and I am now stuck with another 6kg to lose until I am close to my happy weight. Oh well, time to give up the cakes and coca cola then

I'm enjoying being a mum, but I am a bit bored in some respects. We are getting out and about, mums and bubs pilates, cinema, walking, I've been out mountain biking with a chum, and had my first solo mountain bike in Wanaka the other weekend which was magical. It was very good for the soul. I was so happy! But I guess I am bored as I miss going to work/uni and engaging that side of my brain. Watching little M develop is however so much fun.

Anyway my parents arrive on Thursday for 3 months which I really really can't wait for. I need a break during the day just to go for a run, or a swim and get the endorphins going. A walk doesn't quite cut the mustard, and with the OH out at work from 8-1830, the day is a bit long. But the days are getting longer and lighter = hurrah!!!

So generally, I love my cruisey little girl. I don't like the fact my OH is being made redundant and I am about to become a FIFO otherhalf solo parenting for three-quarters of the time. But hey ho. C'est la vie.

Oh and the best or most useful weekly update I've been getting is from the Babycentre. You can click the email for more info if you like.

Friends who read certain books seem to stress about what will happen next, for example friend with a 4 month old is desperate to get her to self settle, currently feeding to sleep, as she has read that at 5 months sleep regression happens and babies will start waking every two hours!!!!! So now shes paranoid about whats about to happen, which is just crazy as I dont see any enjoyment of your child happening but thats just my opinion

Keep an eye on those boobs, Ive just had my 2nd lot of mastitis, luckily I have ab's on hand and seem to be able to stop it getting too bad

I just want that firm pregnant belly back, hating the jelly belly I have but I guess eating dessert and cream wont help

I have enough children (4) but I soooo miss being pregnant. I genuinely enjoy the feeling and like my body most when pregnant, and my babies are 3 months old today (8 weeks corrected age) and just seem too big already. If only I'd been able to start sooner and had more money and I'd have another.

TTL - lol about naming your daughter Jim. I've seen stranger to be honest.
Wow - can't believe you're 33 weeks already. Not long now.

Notenufchaos - sounds like you're doing brilliantly with 3 kids. I've gestated like an elephant, including the MC before this preg, I can't wait NEVER to be preg again lol But you're right, not long to go, and I am really aware that this is my last baby and I should be living in every moment, but so hard to do that with boring old life carrying on in every other respect. And still so much to do before this baby makes her appearance. Still can't think of 'it' as a girl, still think of 'him' in there - force of habit. I'm sure I will get the hang of it once I see her... Otherwise we'll name her Jim and raise her to be a tradey lol DS is very excited, but also regressing a little bit, which can be frustrating, but got to cut him some slack, he is only 3

Otherwise I am still counting the days at work, and starting to get uncomfortably bulky. Finally wearing the belt on and off.. Knocked up was quite good eh, a rare movie that didn't go on about all the 'bad' things about pregnancy, she didn't even get stretchmarks. Neither would I if I was Katherine Heigl though...

How old is your littlie now?

Puggles - I must catch that show! Keep forgetting to tape it. Have you tried expressing a bit to take the pressure down, or maybe nip shields? I know they get bad press, but for a brief reprieve while your boobs sort themselves out, they can be great. I always have to use them at the start for a few weeks at least, until things soften up enough to be more workable...

I'd been stashing away a few meals in preparation, and we're already eating through them - am finding the last few weeks of work just killer!! Have dropped to 4 days a week from this week, and will finish in 4 - 5, so am really looking forward to that. I guess I will spend those days cooking...

Lorna, I had my first son on my own right from the start, it's a big ask, and I see you have an older one as well, hats off to you!

Am really looking forward to my first day off tomorrow since my head has shifted into mum mode and out of work mode, and I just want to indulge it! Am planning a swim, maybe a walk, and getting my eyebrows done. Ah, what a perfect day :-)

Hope you are all starting to get a few more hours sleep each day. Are any of you still pregnant..?

I'm getting my mum to sew some gowns for me for her to wear that have a full skirt so she has plenty of room for her wide knees and is able to kick out still. We will be getting the next size up harness when we go for our check up next fortnight so I'll use cloth covers over the leg straps to prevent that one getting dirty. I'm getting used to the harness now; obviously not ideal but just a fact of life. I'm looking forward to teaching her to role over and start putting weight on her legs while standing, once we have the harness removed as we can't do much in terms of lower development with her legs out of action.

Kezia put on 700g in the past 10 days and has started sharing a few cute smiles with us. Still so busy looking after her, I am in awe of single mums, I think you could have 3 full time parents at this stage of their lives.

Pugglesworth, how is the harness going? Have you come across Lucy Pants? A woman in Christchurch makes pants that fit babies who are in a Pavlik harness and I think she sells them for just the cost of the fabric. http://www.facebook.com/greenappledesigns. We have found scrubbing with Sards Wonder Soap and a toothbrush effective for cleaning the harness, then wipe with a wet paper towel and dry with a dry one. We also keep some socks (I think they are 1 year size) over the boot part to keep that clean and I have wrapped some cloth around the straps at the back. That way if they get poo on the cloth can just go in the wash. I just stuck it on with masking tape but you could make something with velcro. I hope it's working out ok for you. I am still struggling with breast feeding positions.

I have been MIA for awhile, to be honest the facebook groups are so busy i have been posting in there alot.

Our news - we welcomed Jackson Joel into the world on Monday 16th July 2012 at 827 am. He was born at home (unplanned home birth) after a 3hr labour. Waters broke at 810am and he was born at 827 am. 2-3 pushes! He weighed 8pd2. We are totaly in love with our new addition and his big brother Blake adores him.

So its been a very busy month adjusting to life with a newborn and a busy toddler but we are all doing pretty good.

Congratulations to everyone else! Hope all is going well for everyone :-)

I've just struggled with having to totally give up the life i once knew, but things are getting easier now, and Stella really is a super baby, so couldn't ask for more there, it's just no one can truely prepare you for the changes that a little baby brings to your life!
Anyway, Stella was born on the 20 July - 1 day after her due date, but this was after a 45 hour labour, and I won't put you all off having anymore babies with that story, but lets just say we ended up over at Waikato, was roled into theatre to have a C section, but she was down to low, and they decided to do a forcep delivery, i had an episiotemy and tore, and Stella's head was around the wrong way which the dr didn't realise so she ended up with a huge black eye, fat lip, cut to her head and a grazed nose - but she's all good now and I actually felt fine after the birth.
I think the hard part is after having such a long labour is you can't have aday or two off to recover!!
Things are going well now, she's a good sleeper and is gaining lots of weight, and she gives the best cuddles ever.
Hope everyone else is doing well, and that you're enjoying you babies!
xx

My DH is working away atm so my wonderful mum has been coming to help me in the afternoon and evenings. It is just so hard trying to do dinner/bath/bed with toddler and sort baby out too! I don't know why it's such a big deal, two weeks shouldn't make any difference to anyone in the big picture, and surely it is the best thing for me and baby, so really it's a no-brainer! But I have been finding it stupidly difficult to just put my foot down!! On the other hand, it is SO appealing to only have 6 weeks of work left instead of 8 - gives me hope I could actually make it...!!

Sorry to hear of all the sleep deprivation and bf teething problems. And Koromiko, your situation sounds really tough, but you're right, you're doing the right thing and it's not for too long.. My partner will be away for four nights when baby is about 4 weeks old, and I had been thinking it should be ok, but reading your posts is bringing back just how tough those first few weeks really are - will ring in the back-up, especially since we're likely to have a section and I won't able to drive!!! Might be best to get the family on board and take my 3.5yo to daycare or at least out of the house for a bit here and there for that week!!
She's in it for six weeks full time, except they told us she could take it off for baths. Then they will reassess but hopefully just another six weeks part time, depending how it's going with her hips. I've found it quite hard, when she first got put in it my partner and I both cried. But it won't be for ever and she won't remember it. Part of what has helped me deal with it is trying to imagine her as a young woman having arthritis or some other problem and saying to us "why didn't you get me put in a harness?" She doesn't seem too bothered by it, except it takes us longer to change her nappies which she hates. I have found breastfeeding really challenging. I have been trying to feed her in the rugby hold with her body propped up on pillows and her legs hanging off behind, but finding it hard to get her in the right place to latch on. I think before her body used too curve around me more but it's stiff with the harness. You're in Wellington too, eh? We should have another Wellington coffee catch up some time and we can compare harness notes.

That weight gain is incredible, must be like liposuction for you :-) No point feeling guilty about your bigger boys, it's not for very long and then you'll have a little bit more time for them eh. As long as other family is making a good fuss of them, that will have to do for the moment.

My preg is going very well, thanks. Lots of kicks, baby measuring a bit big for dates (measuring 31 weeks at 29) but not sure how accurate this tape measure gig is. I have an appt with ob to discuss to c or not to csection in a couple of weeks (you might remember we had a major shoulder dystocia last time) so am looking forward to that and the end of all our speculating. Am also considering going to helensville birthcare after a section to have a better rest etc. and so DP can stay with me one night with nb. Otherwise, all is good. DS is very sweet and hugs the bump and tells it 'I love you my little sister' which is pretty cool :-) I think 3.5 is actually about the perfect gap b/c he can understand so much and isn't too needy of me at the moment, although I'm still his clear favourite hahahaha

The only downside is work which has been quite full on. I'm in a team of three, and the other two were both off sick this week which has been greeeeat for me. not. They still don't have a replacement in sight, and when I told boss he could probably only count on me until 36 weeks (not 38), he said I was upsetting his holiday plans. He was planning to be away for my last two weeks, so i'd have my work, his work and handover to my replacement. My, how appealing... I pointed out that the baby could be here at 36 weeks (you can sort of tell he has no kids) so it's his call when he books his hols. GRRRRrrrrrrrrrr Frustrating but I'm refusing to feel a whole lot of extra pressure from it, although perhaps not doing so well now that I see how this has turned into a total rant...

did anyone here work past 36 weeks and how did it go? Considering a section would be at 39 weeks, i would want at least two weeks off beforehand surely??

Is weird though because they are constantly feeding as if on a growth spurt that never stops, and my supply isn't noticeably coming up.

They are both smiling at times but we've had our share of difficulties too. Leo can be quite an unsettled boy (awake for hours overnight and grizzly during the day). Max is much more chilled out nd is s right little pork chop.
Sometimes it's difficult balancing baby demands with quality time with Mr2 & Mr4, but I can only do my best. I was fortunate enough to have a friend visit for a 5 week holiday from overseas but she's gone now, felt a bit guilty; she was a massive help but her holiday was planned before I was preggy so not the holiday she expected. That being said we made time for excursions and had a great time watching Wimbledon and the Olympics too.
Aiming for Mr2 & Mr4 time on the weekend. Hoping DH will step up with baby cares to enable this.

TTL - how is your preggy going? You must have quite the gorgeous round belly by now.

That birth sounds crazy!! Beautiful pic of your little girl though, and Elise is a really pretty name :-)

Jadew, I am still checking in (partly because I'm such a dick I enjoy seeing my ticker moving along lol). All going well, just getting big and frumpy and occasionally my inner bitch is slipping out but what the hell.

Michelle G, we had our son sleeping in a bassinet beside our bed. Sometimes if he stirred, I could get him back to sleep by making seashore/whistling noises in a rhythmic sot of way. Anything you can do with your head on your pillow is worth a shot eh :-) the six week mark is when baby usually has a little growth spurt and starts miss one nap a day, ie. stays up for the period between two feeds. So, they get more stimulation at that time, and hopefully sleep a little better for it and for being a little bit bigger and able to stock up a bit more. Then I think around 3 months they have another spurt, and some start to drop a night feed at that point giving you a few hours straight sleep. So it really does just get better and better . Isn't it bad design that the worst bit is at the start when you're already recovering from the energetics and damage of birth and having to learn a whole lot and to bfeed as well.. The tiredness you're feeling is all part of it, but hang in there, it will start to improve. Just be selfish about the times where you can rest and make the most of them. And I agree with Puggles, there's nothing wrong with being in contact with your baby a lot. It's not like you're teaching her to need your contact - she already knows that because it's all she's ever known. You're starting out on a long, slow process of teaching her to be separate from you, and it takes around 20 years ... hehe

Also, my friend gave me some advice that I used when Brooklyn was under 6 weeks old; just hold her if that's what she wants you to do. At that young age, I don't think there's anything wrong with holding her while she sleeps if you both enjoy it; who cares what the books say is right or wrong? I was worried about doing what I was 'supposed' to do at the time, but now that she's 8 weeks old she sleeps better and doesn't wake up (once I get her to sleep) and I don't regret holding her when she was younger.

We had to have a harness put on this week as she has been disgnosed with hip displasia. She's not allowed to take it off for 3 weeks so no baths, etc. It's not fun (and already covered in poo) but we're trying to think it's for the best and it won't be forever. Anyone else had any experiences with their previous children?

    Author: jadew
Subject: 40818
Posted: 10 August 2012 at 9:26am

Michelle- my little girl is similar- loves sleeping in your arms, not so keen on her bed during the day, luckily she's ok with it at night. I have her in a wrap (like a moby) on me during the day but finding long bursts still a bit hard on my tummy from c-sec.
When I have time and she needs to be in bed I get her nice and drowsy on me then gently do the transfer leaving my hands still on her & rocking/ patting her in bed til she settles. This doesn't always work first time though and requires persistence!
At night I swaddle her, the room is dark and I have just starting using white noise/ heart beat as well.

ttl- if you're still popping in wanted to wish yopu all the best for 3rd tri and the birth of your little girl. I'm mostly just on FB now but will keep lurking in the October thread waiting for your news :)

All going well here, Xanthe is feeding & sleeping well (mostly) & gaining weight. Can't believe she's a month old on Sunday!

That sounds very familiar drvic! Our wee bean had been feeding about 2.5-3 hourly until Sunday. Since then I have turned into psycho sleep deprived evil woman and our gorgeous baby seems to want to feed hourly - 90mins and then she and I both get pi$$ed off when there isn't much milk there. The annoying thing is in the afternoon she seems to snooze and feed back on 3hr cycles again. Slightly losing my nut, although the wonderful OH worked from home yesterday to provide moral support. That and FaceTime on the iPhone rocks. I'm speaking to my parents in the UK usually twice a day and they are being absolute rocks.

On the upside, my stitches seem to be healing and my body is coming back to normal thanks to my physio and osteo A swim/bike/run are only just around the corner - yay!!!!

You have to do what works best for you and your baby, and if it is dominating your life and enjoyment of your baby then it is time to look to reconsider things. It annoys me how (NZ) society is so pro breastfeeding that it makes mothers like you, in genuinely difficult situations, feel bad for considering an alternative. As Littlebig said, you have given your baby the best start to life already.

Author: drvic
Subject: 40818
Posted: 26 July 2012 at 10:59pm

Sarah#1 - mmmm. If you're struggling with BF then maybe it's not right for you. As I've recently said on FB, there is no arsenic in formula. It's not evil. If formula takes the pressure off you so you can enjoy all the other aspects of motherhood then you should consider it. That being said, if you're keen to breastfeed then I don't understand what the midwife is talking about. Max and Leo were exactly 5 weeks prem, and Mr4 was nearly 5 weeks early. All 3 started on formula With non idea how to latch, but I managed to get them all fully breastfed after a lot of effort. I went on to feed Me4 for nearly 2 years. Leo has a crap latch but manages to get milk without cracking my nipples so its OK. The expressing sucks and is exhausting. Basically I got my supply up by feeding first, then expressing thereafter even if nothing is coming out. The stimulation helps. If I gave a bottle of EBM I'd express again then too. Look up the Internet for Tiger Milk - its a mix of ingredients in a smoothie that is supposed to increase supply. Some of my patients swear by it. There are some herbal remedies to increase supply too but I don't have experience with them. Finally, your Dr can prescribe medication to increase your supply (usually domperidone). Can be really useful to kick start things if you do want to breast feed. Remember it also doesn't have to be one or other - you can mixed feed. Don't let others pressure you one way or another. Whatever feels right to you is right.
Why was Matthew induced a month early? Definitely stay with us here in July. My boys were born June 2 and I stayed - love the company in the July forum. ;)

Nichel - a massage voucher was a great idea. Littlebig- the tattooed baby is priceless. Do it, and post it on here too! I had male midwife and male obstetrician. Got them each vouchers to a nice restaurant, and also got obs some nice wine and a thank you cake. Not very original but I think they were grateful.

Pugglesworth - yay on getting day/night sorted. My boys are oblivious to the difference and Leo is rather pleased with his 90min cycle. I am less pleased. Max on a 3-4 hr cycle on average. Both clearly thriving and I haven't gone mad yet so we'll just go with it. Brooklyn 2 weeks behind my boys so if you're gaining 330g you'll be matching Leo's gains by the same date.

Looking forward to more birth stories.

    Author: sarah_#1
Subject: 40818
Posted: 26 July 2012 at 5:20pm

Our wee baby was due this coming saturday, but decided to come a month early. So not sure if I should stay in July babies or go to June?? Anyway, it was all very exciting. I have only just managed to get back to some sort of normality. I had a normal birth, but it was induced and we did need forcepts in the end. Managed to do it all on 2 panadol and gas. The hospital midwife didn't realise how far along I was, and at first check had just passed 8cm!! So no time for an epidural then. Mind you I did get a general after the delivery when they took me to theatre to sort out the very bad tear and the cut.

I'm just struggling now with the decision between formula feeding and breastmilk feeding. I know all the benefits of breastmilk, but being that Matthew was a month early the midwife today said that it is very unlikely he will ever latch on - we have been trying since birth. So my only options are formula or to continue expressing for every feed - which is absolutely exhausting me. I feel so guilty just thinking about formula, but both the midwife and our doctor have said that it's OK to go that way if we choose.

Has anyone else had to face this decision with a prem baby?

Hopefully it stays this way and she doesn't switch night time with day time alertness as it is rejuvinating getting a few chunks of sleep throughout the night, even if it is just two 2 hour lots. Got 6 week immunisations next week; not looking forward to putting her through the pain so hope she doesn't have too bad a reaction to it.

Dr Vic - Your boys are growing so well! You must have super milk. B is only 3080g, up from 2.6kg at birth. She is still really tiny but is healthy so mw/paed/plunket aren't concerned. She put on 330g this week so I think she just had a slow start due to being prem. I was trying to think of what to get my mw but I can't think of anything as I don't know her personally. The massage voucher is a good idea Nichel. I'd be interested to see what others suggest too.

Good luck to those still waiting...
