I think the permanent medication is either NSAID or steroid based which isn't ideal (DH has gout too).

Unfortunately as mentioned above there are different triggers in different people. A friend of ours changed his brand of beer and came right. DH can't drink red wine or he is hobbling the next day.

Our doctor says it is not related to bad diet at all, that's just a myth from 100's of years ago (where many poorer people died at the age where gout appears while richer people lived a bit longer) and that people with a well balanced diet also suffer from gout.

Good luck figuring out the trigger(s)

DH had something that docs thought was gout 2 weeks ago (turned out it wasnt) but i feel for you, it looked extremely painful and its hard for us wifeys to stand by and watch as theres not much we can do to make it better.

My hubby gets gout too. It sounds soooo painful, and the weirdest things trigger him! Like reheated chicken or broccoli. Also the more "yeasty" beers like Export Gold, but he can drink the more expensive ones like heinekin :-)

He has ended up going on medication (Allipuronol or something) because it just kept flaring up even when he watched what he ate.

I think we need to keep a food diary too... it is just not worth the pain so it would be good to find out his triggers. Oh that sucks Alex, we looked into Gout as one of the things that we thought was up with DH, I think if he drinks a low carb beer he'll be better? A couple of the guys at work suffer (badly) from Gout.
With one of them tomatoes set him off and that is pretty much the only thing.
The other guy gets it from shellfish (which I think is pretty common) but also gets it from asparagus and vegemite & marmite.
Probably no help at all but from talking to them it sounds like the triggers can be so different from person to person.

DF has been getting gout on and off for the last few years but much more regularly in the last 6 months. He is having his second episode in 1 month and it has just flared up this morning. He had two beers yesterday and we think that is what may have triggered it.

He has not had a very good diet in the last 5 years but much better in the last 12 months, but this is when it has been it's worst.

He has cut out red meat almost completely and gets plenty of vege and not too much salt and is not a heavy drinker, just the odd few beers here and there...
