Midwife told me that ours was just a blocked tear duct. Because they are so tiny, it's very common that it happens. MW gave me saline solution in little tubes, you could get those at the pharmasist but not all that differnt to the warm water you have been using.

Any remedies when you are not breastfeeding? DS has had a gunky eye for a couple of weeks now. Not red or swollen. If you are breastfeeding you can put a week bit of breast milk on it... weird I know but it works... my DD had a wee bit of conjunctivitis after she was born and the midwife suggested this and it worked.....

If it is a wee eye infection and doesn't settle with the breast milk go see your doctor.

eta didn't see your reply already... I typed the first bit stopped as phone rang then posted.... now really better go do some housework....

If you're breastfeeding, a little squirt in the eye at each feeding is magic. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get worse. The last couple of days I've noticed bubs has got a weepy/gooey eye. It isn't terrible, just more watery than normal and sometimes a bit gunky.
