Hi!

Im in a similar situation arrived in NZ on April 1st! had DS in Aussie... the best bet other than what the girls above had said is to find a midwife and talk to her about it all, thats what i did and it helped a lot! there really isn't that much that is different!

I think the main difference here to Aus is that in NZ, you have a 'lead maternity carer' and all care by your LMC is funded. Your LMC can be a midwife, a GP that does obstetrics, or in rare cases an obstetrician.

You have regular appointments with your LMC throughout pregnancy, and they can refer you to whoever else you need to see - for blood tests, scans, or if there's an issue that requires it, to an obstetrician. Most things you're referred for are free - although some places seem to charge a little for scans (like $20,30).

You can give birth at home with a midwife if you choose (I think this is not allowed in Aus??? or rarely?) or you can go to a birthing centre, or to a hospital. Birthing centres aren't usually set up for medical situations like c-sections, and you'd be referred on to a hospital in that situation.

Pretty much all care while you're pregnant is free. It's pretty standard to have a 12 week scan (nuchal fold, for downs, and a couple of other things) and a 20 week scan (dating, sex, physical problems etc). Some mums also have early dating scans (8 weeks) and various other tests, if they're thought to be at risk for some reason.

Once you've had your baby, your LMC will come and visit you at home for a while (Maybe a health nurse if you had a GP or obst as your LMC) and then after a period of time (I think it was at six weeks?) you are transferred on to a 'well child' provider. Visits to the doctor when it's pregnacy are public funded.
Ultra sounds with a referral are subsided and about $40.
A midwife and all visits etc are public funded.
If you have a high risk pregnancy and have to be referred to an obestrition this is free (but if you choose to have an obestrition instead of a midwife this would have to be funded privately).

Hey Everyone,

I moved over to NZ in July last year and have just found out the I am pregnant. I had my daughter in Australia and it's a whole different system here to what I am used to. If anyone has any advice or could just kinda clue me in to what happens over here that'd be great.
