I knew a little girl who bum shuffled, and it was hilarious watching her approach the stairs, put her legs up and then think "now what?"!!

    Author: Dophy
Subject: 42213
Posted: 16 June 2012 at 7:07pm

as the others have said this is only the start of all that 'advice' of usually well meaning people but it can be so frustrating. When I was pregnant I used to hate random people grabbing at my stomach and coming really close into me (and usually they had really bad breath! haha). I used to also hate it when people would say things like 'you lifes over now!" really?! it seems my life really begun when my daughter was born.
Now my daughter is 16 months and she bum shuffles (doesn't crawl but its kinda cute) and I had people tell me different things like her brain wont be able to develop properly etc etc if she doesn't crawl which thank goodness found out was a load of crap.
Theres only one way to stop the 'advice' from getting to you is only really listen to advice from people you trust like plunket, mum, dr etc. Plus you'll find once baby arrives you'll suddenly acquire the mothers instinct. Best of luck with the pregnancy and enjoy :)

But as everyone has said above, it's only the beginning! Books like The NZ Pregnancy Book were pretty good at just presenting the info and not trying to second guess your experience/feelings

I try and think that they are well meaning and smile and nod. if i think they are full of sh*t or offensive then i'll prob bite back a bit at times (this is often in relation to how well my sleep/coffee needs are being met).

good luck with this aspect of the journey of parenthood!

    Author: kit kat
Subject: 42213
Posted: 16 June 2012 at 10:43am

I'm expecting my first baby at over 40, started doing some online reading and i am SO OVER IT. Some pet peeves: 1) Being told really encouraging things like "you probably wont put on any weight in the first trimester" and "by week 19 you may have a wee baby bump and need to wear maternity clothes" - try 10 kilograms put on in the first trimester and maternity clothes at week 11. way to make me feel normal. 2) being told how i feel such as "you will be excited and anticipating your little bundle" and "you will feel fabulous now that the first trimester is over" - last time I checked only I knew how I feel. 3) the anthropomorphising of the fetus - no, baby is not kicking mummy to get attention, or thinking about his next meal, or anything that only a post-partum human can do, think, or feel! So, sorry if this post is a downer, or seems angry. I am just annoyed with being pushed into a mold and constantly "informed" of my reality instead of being presented with information and options. I hope that this chances as we move forward and for now I'm going to stick to those forums where I have found good solid information and stop reading about how abnormal I am.
