My daughter recently had a cough for 6 weeks and then got tested for whooping cough. We were told as 6 weeks had passed she was no longer contagious. As it was - it wasn't whooping cough. But just a thought? What has her gp mentioned to her in regards to staying home, etc?

It is likely that even if you have been immunized in the past, that your immunization will have worn off now so you could be at risk of getting it. As I understand, it's not so dangerous for you to have it, or even an older child, but if your new born gets it then that's not great at all. Statistically NBs are most likely to get it from their mums.
If it were me, I'd be considering avoiding getting whooping cough by either not exposing myself (at a similar stage of pregnancy!) to the child known to have it or I might even consider paying $25 and getting the whooping cough booster - (something which is being offered to pregnant mums in chch for free).
My husband is exposed to whooping cough quite frequently in his job (occupational hazard much!) I think he's going to get the booster....we are expecting in the next couple of weeks too.

I'm not sure of advice on infection control re: the bassinet. I'm not sure how long the bug lives for.....

Main thing really, is to protect your vulnerable new born :)
Very little risk to your toddler as she's been vaccinated but a lot of risk to you unless you've had the booster in recent years. Pregnancy puts stress on your lungs and whooping cough would create even more stress! I'm not sure about the bassinet, perhaps ask your gp?

Edited by Stoked

Whooping cough is highly contagious and really dangerous in young babies. I am borrowing my friend's moses basket and bought a new mattress for it even though her baby wasn't sick at all while she used it. There has been some research linking second hand mattresses to SIDs - although there hasn't been any conclusive evidence I didn't want to risk it.

http://sidsandkidswa.org/assets/info-statements/second-hand-mattress-use.pdf

My close friend has a wee baby who has just been diagnosed with whooping cough. It is her toddlers birthday party in the weekend and I am wondering if it is 'safe' to go.

The baby went to dr on Thurs and got antibiotics, but it looks like he is going to need more as although he is not getting worse, he is not improving. Also the baby is sleeping in my bassinet and just at the back of my mind I am wondering if it will be ok for my wee one after him having been sick and sleeping in it (I am thinking as it is still a few weeks till my wee one is born a good wash will be ok?).

Thanks :)
