Yeah and they are stuck lying ontheir backs on a bed the whole time. I like how you have to ask for the pain relief so you try everything else first.

Haha I was 19 when I had jack and only had gas and it sure didn't put me off. Yer i do admit i watched maternity ward all through my pregnancy so when ella was born i expected them to shove that thing up her nose and in her mouth to get rid of the mucus!

I have watched quite a few that have had skin to skin contact. And i know alot of my american friends have. But u also have to remember that the babies born on that show are rarely ever full term healthy ones? I turned 20 the day before I gave birth to Ella. If my mum tried to determine what I was and wasn't allowed to do during labour, I would have been livid. Luckily I have a lovely mum who supported me through my pregnancy and still is now - but I decided not to have her at the birth with me (didn't want her to see me like that). I decided I wanted a natural birth and only had gas & air at the end of my labour to stop me from biting my partner hehe (my labour was 17 hours)

I think from memory the doctors were telling the girl it was up to her but she didnt want to go against her mothers wishes although she did in the end and had teh epi right?

That's true Liz - this time round I was way more worried about afterwards. And not just about what to do with the baby(ies) - I remembered all the icky things like afterpains and sore boobies and how much it hurt to pee! In NZ a 19yo is a adult so the mother's say is nought.

With me, I had about 4 hours labour with Hannah, then haemorrage, then emergency c/s. I remember feeling soooo much relief when the epidural came along that I decided I was definitely going to do that (epi) again.

With Briona I had contractions for 30 hours, then ARM (rupture), then labour came on very quickly, I had epi, Briona was born within 3 hours. While it was probably good to have the epi after basically being induced, I didn't like the side effects: 1) I didn't feel any pushing sensation; 2) I had a "pocket" where the epi didn't properly take effect; and 3) the tingling on my bum after a couple of hours, while I was pushing, was too distracting.

Soooo... as scary as it seems, from time to time, I have decided to go with just gas this time around. I used to watch Maternity Ward all the time except when Im pregnant cos i spend the whole time in tears.

Yeah I reckon its the lady having the baby who should decided how she gives birth. My parents know a couple whose daughter got pregnant and they made her give birth at Kenepuru so there was no option of an epidural.

Both Mum and I agreed that we think its wrong. If you are the one having the baby then it should be YOU who makes up your mind about pain relief.

I have been doing a lot of research about having no pain relief for my next one (as I had an epi for Charlotte) but some of the stories I am reading are making me think that I at least need to ensure I have the option available to me at the time. I watched that and cracked up at the "father" of that baby. He was stroking the girl in labour when she yelled "STOP TOUCHIN ME" and he got all offended and tried to argue with her. Stupid! I loved it!

as for the no pain relief - With jake I had gas and pethidine, Taine was just gas. I didn't see it, but I can honestly say that my labour and delivery the twins with no pain relief was actually less painful than my labour and delivery with Maya when I had the epidural coz they let the epi wear off during transition with Maya so I went from pain free to being in agony, whereas with the twins I felt the contractions building up gradually so I was better able to cope.

I had a cesarean section so I had morphine pain relief for 24 hours after surgery on a self administering pump so I can't sympathise, but I do generally believe that informed consent is not very well publicised when it comes to pregnancy. They wont offer you the pain relief, you have to ask for it, that girl could have asked for it at any time, I'm glad for her that the nurse on duty was pushy and made the mum understand that this was what was best for the young mother. We can'y all assume that life will have a smooth course. If Olivia got pregnant at 16? i saw that too, i thought the mother needed a slap! she is 19, not 14, and how rude of her to say what she is and isnt allowed during labour. would not want that for a mother that is for sure!

and no, i dont think having pain relief or not having pain relief makes much of a difference in your decision to have more kids, i think the factors that influence that are more to do with how your pregnancy was, how you cope with a baby, your upbringing, finances - in fact there is heaps more to it than the labour itself.

Linelle I have seen that episode a few times now - that series has been on sky for over 2 years now.

The mother was so wrong but I can also see her point. Her daughter got herself in that mess and wanted her to go through the pain (well what she thought was the worst pain in the world) so she would learn not to do it again. I think her mum was a bi*ch and should not of been there and should have been removed from the room as it wasn't her birth it was her daughters and her daughter should have made the decision herself - which I think she did end up doing and taking some drugs.

I didn't have any drugs as I went so so fast with Andrew due to the induction. I still want another child after this one so we'll see how things go.

Okay, while watching this this morning there was a lady on there who had a 19 yr old daughter having a baby. The mother would not let the daughter have any pain relief because she didn't want her daughter to have another baby. I think this is wrong.

My question to you ladies is did having pain relief or not having pain relief have any effect on your decision to have or not to have any more kids??
