This is just a quick note to say what I did... Han always liked being wrapped but not with her arms in... well, they started in (folded so her hands were by her chin) but they always came out! I think Han liked the feeling of wrapping around her tummy... which is why the safety sleep worked so well with her. I think it came from me rubbing or resting my hand on her tummy when she was very little when trying to get her off to sleep.

Anywayyyy... I used only the wrap until Han figured out how to stand up in her cot (and couldn't figure out how/refused to get back down), from then on I 'tied her down' with the safety sleep. Took her safety sleep off when she got strong enough to wriggle over and stand up with it still attached to the bed! (How? I do not know)

Don't worry about what everyone else says.. it was when Ella was around Erin's age that I figured out that it's okay to go against the "norm" lol. And now I do it on a regular basis haha.. Ella sleeps in her pram for naps and I'm sure many ppl would disagree with me on this but guess what.. they do not know her as well as I do and have not been there every single day of her life! I still wrap my little man at night along with using the safety sleep. During the day I just use the safety sleep and don't wrap him. Although this morning he managed to push out of the velcro and roll over onto his front (which he has never done before. I have tried leaving his arms out of the safety sleep and sometimes he settles and sometimes he doesn't. So you can probably still say that at 8 months I am still wrapping my wee man. We swaddled Charlotte until she was 8 months- she used to wake quite a bit during the night and Mum always told me it was because she couldn't get comfotable because she was swaddled so tight. We had to do it tight because if she got her arms out she woke herself up and wouldn't sleep! We were at her house for a week or so over Christmas and she worked on me over a few days and eventually got me to agree to try her without it- she slept the whole night through without waking.

I was so shocked/horrified that she actually knew better than me. She honestly sounds exactly like your Mum- they are just trying to do what they think is right and I know it sucks but sometimes they do know what they are talking about. In saying that though- she is your bub and Charlotte was older when we took her out of hers. I think the pinning is for when they can undo it themselves, but by then, it is probably being used more for comfort than anything... Jake never worked ut how to undo his, but started standing up in it, and as I want it for #2, i took it off to save the velcro! lol! I love it, I was able to sleep Jake on his side and not worry about him rolling over. Personally, he hated swaddling, but had the sts from day 1. He was bad at scooting up the cot as well,a ns spinning around, so the sts kept him in one spot!

Re the advertising on the website & not being wrapped thing - I'm sure none of the babies on there had their Safety Sleep pinned to them either like the instructions say to do! Well... Not pinned to them but to the clothes they're wearing. I never pin it. And I don't think I will until she discovers how to undo it herself. So like someone said above, the pictures on the website aren't necessarily instructions on how it should be done.

Ashlee was swaddled for all of maybe 3 weeks?

I wrapped and safety sleeped as well - it was the best way for me to ensure the wrap would last all night, cos as soon as her arms escaped she woke up. I think I did that to about 8 months, than transitioned to a sleepsack but with her arms inside the sack (not in the sleeves) then gradually went to sleeves. Even now she will rarely sleep with a sack, so am getting mum to make a cotton one for summer!

Jax theres nothing wrong with what you are doing - obviously as so many of us did/do the same. NOw I'm convinced that Caitlin and Ella were meant to be twins! That's exactly the way Caitlin sleeps with her knees bent up LOL

Swadding lasted all of 3 days out of hospital (7 days in total). i must say i have never looked after a baby who was swaddled and in safetsleep - i didnt know that was the intention behind sts system?
I agree tho it is getting hotter so maybe swaddle in muslin for the nights too?
maybe contact sts and ask them? I just chuck ella in the safety sleep arms and leggies free. Shes not a swaddler she hates it with a passion probably coz she likes to sleep with her arms out up by her head lol

Thank you so much for your support and reassurance ladies ! I did point out to mum that because it is hot we are using muslin, and she goes to sleep in only a singlet and nappy because of that too.

Like I was saying last night, IMHO it seems pretty silly to think of a baby is some how endangered when it is wrapped up then velcro'd down. Maybe she could able to get out of the swaddle to eat the saftey sleep, or maybe even get put a pitch a tent under it in her swaddle and roast some marshmallows (oooh fire danger!). But at 4 months old the possiblity is pretty remote.
I think that your mum is lovingly concerned but you are being Erins mum, she is the grand parent and alas although they see all and know all it is your turn to be superior with the "I know what is best for my child" speech.

I used to put Alyssa to bed exactly the same way as you jax and I don't believe there is any danger in it! And like you said, depending on the temperature you just adjust what blankets they have on accordingly.. When she was ready to wake up in the morning she used to wriggle her arms out.

I haven't ever used a safety sleep but on the swaddling note... I say go ahead and keep on wrapping as it obviously is Erin's preferred settling tool. With Hannah, I let the swaddling wean off really quickly as she was born in summer and I was more concerned about overheating (especially during the day) than swaddling. Turns out the best for her because she is a finger-sucker.

As for Briona, I thought I would do much the same. She was wrapped for about 2 months I think when I decided she was big enough to go without it. After some trying times, we went back to wrapping her until about 6-7 months.

I swaddled Maya in the safety sleep until she was about 7 months or so (I think, she might have been a bit older). Ad I swaddle the twins as well.

I have heard horror stories of kids nearly hanging themselves etc. but it's the only way my girls will sleep. When Mercedes SS was in the wash last week she turned herself right around in the cot and got her arms out and woke herself up. Sienna hates being wrapped so I tried putting her in the SS unwrapped but she wouldn't sleep until I wrapped her (funny baby , she fights being wrapped but won't settle without it!).

IMHO - your kid, your decision. Like I said yesterday I'm lucky that my Mum is pretty good, she only dispenses advice when asked and doesn't try to force things on me, but you know Erin best and you know what's best for her.

I'll keep doing what I'm doing with the girls in their SS until they get old enough not to swaddle, then they'll just be in the safety sleep.

my only concern would be overheating - it was very icky last night.

I can't see what difference it makes if she's all wrapped up anyways whether she is in the safety sleep or not?!?!? Isn't the "not being able to move around" the whole purpose for wrapping and the safety sleep? lol

Last night mum and I had a bit of an argy bargy over the way we (DH and I) usually put Erin down to bed. How we do it at the moment is swaddle her (arms in) and then put her inside the safety sleep, THEN put blankets or just sheets up over her depending on the temperature. Oh, and she is also right at the foot of the bed.

Apparently what the problem was, is that mum had done some "investigating" and found out that a) Plunket doesn't "endorse" Safety Sleeps, and b) that "none of the babies on the Safety Sleep website are wrapped up, they all have their arms out"... THEREFORE *I* must be doing it wrong ! She went as far as to say she was very "concerned" at the way I was doing this, and that I should try unwrapping her as it was more 'natural' and would allow for more movement.

Before we put the safety sleep on Erin's bed, we had an incident one morning where she completely unwrapped herself, and had turned 180 degrees around in her cot ! We then tried her inside the safety sleep but without wrapping her, but because she still had some movement and her arms were free - wouldn't sleep, and then wound up screaming because she was overtired. Last night we put her down at 7:30pm (unwrapped) and she was hysterical by 8:10pm, and so was I. So after I had calmed down a little and done some "research" of my own, I rang mum and explained to her what had just happened, and I *finally* got an apology.

I guess what I'm trying to get at with my novel here is what you ladies' opinions are... is wrapping Erin up (arms incl.) and then putting her in the safety sleep a bad idea? Or dangerous?

And as far as wrapping goes, when did you stop with your babies, and how did you do it? I'm not prepared to do it just yet (stop wrapping her), so am arming myself with a plan for the future I guess.
