I thought he was hungry but it turns out he just didn't know how else to get himself back to sleep & was just having a feed to comfort himself. I started giving him a 'dream feed' - where you pick them up & feed them while they're still half asleep - at about 10:30 each night & that seemed to see him through until about 6ish. Then when he'd slept until then for a few nights, I did his 'dream feed' a bit earlier - about 10pm - & he slept through, so after a few nights I dropped that feed & he now sleeps right through without a night feed.

I'm planning to be a bit harder on this one though, apparently once they are 6mos they don't need a night feed but it often can be a comfort thing. I would suggest:

* try to top her up between dinner time and bed
* make a "small" (half-full?) bottle up for the midnight shift and see if you can get her back to bed after just that much
* water at night
* quick cuddle and back to bed - obviously if she cries you'll have to work that out. I would say if she wakes again within 2hrs then she is actually hungry.

Try to increase her water intake during the day. My eldest (2 1/2) was bottle fed and slept thru the night quite young but when she started waking thru the night I just gave her water and left a non-spill sipper cup and she soon got the hang of it. Anastasia 1year is b/f and have found (for bout 3 months) if she is not drinking enough fluid, inclucing water during the day we have v.v. bad nights, she will not take a bottle but have a straw cup with valve which she can handle really well and now is very good at getting water during the day when thirsty. Hope this helps

Ok, so it was more like every other feed, as in she would go down at 7, be up at 11pm, 3am and 5am before I would get her up at 6.30am. I dropped the 11pm one first then the 5am one just occasionally got left before it blended in with her 6.30 one. Olivia wasn't taking much over night though, The girl had approximately 600-650mls a day at 3 months and 100mls of that was over night (she now does approx 750mls). Also dropping feeds did make her more hungry during the day. Although she wasn't on solids. Just think, you only have one more month to go before you don't have to offer fluids before meals. You might probably have more success with it then, getting her into the habit of feeding when she should be thirsty etc etc.
Ok, enough rambling!

He is a big kid, too. In th end, I knew it was just habit, so I had to do the cry it out thing, which was very very hard. One night, I filled his bottle with water, and gave it to him, and when he pushed it away and said "bottle" after downing half of it before he realised it wasn't milk, I just said to him in a very firm mummy voice, "No Jacob, this is your bottle, you are not having any milk, so lie down and get some sleep"... and he did. had to do that for about a week, after a week of scream blue murder cry it out.

Still, you wee girl may be a bit little for that, but you may be able to get her down to one bottle, by just checking on her, not picking her up, making sure she is warm enough and gently saying go back to sleep or something.

Whatever you do, it will be hard, and when she gets sick or teethes it will all change again, and you will be back at square one, that is what I found, anyhow.

Good luck, if I can think of any more advice through my still catching up on sleep brain, I will post again. Also, read the Take back the power support thread, there is a bit in there about sleeping...

I have had two pieces of information, one from my plunket nurse who says I should continue with giving her milk at night till she is 9 months and the other from our GP who thinks that because of her size (she is both tall and heavy!), I could probably try to start weaning her now.

She won't drink a lot during the day (she would prefer to have solids instead and is having 3 meals a day) and including the 440 mls she drinks at night, probably gets a total of about 700mls a day. However, she is still putting on weight and seems very healthy.

I have a couple of questions:

Does anyone else have or has had this problem?
What did you do?
If I do decide to start weaning her off the night bottles, what would be the best way, ie watering down her feeds at night or just offering water instead?

A bit of a ramble, sorry. But would LOVE some advice from others who may have experienced this problem.
