Ooo I just found this on The Nappy Network and thought it'd be handy for those who are looking at using pockets... or those who already do but haven't discovered the world of natural fibres etc.

Summary of inserts most commonly used in pocket nappies


Flannelette flats (traditional flannelette nappy square)
- very fast drying,
- cheap,
- trim,
- reasonably absorbent for the thickness,
- a great, very trim option for short periods of time during the day,
- two needed at night,
- needs to be folded into pad shape.

Terry flats (traditional terry towelling nappy square)
- very fast drying,
- cheap,
- quite absorbent,
- quite bulky,
- needs to be folded into pad shape.

Flannelette prefolds
- trim,
- less folding required,
- available in patterns and colours,
- reasonably absorbent for the thickness,
- 2 needed at night,
- not as fast to dry as squares,
- more expensive.

Microfibre Towels
- very trim,
- very absorbent,
- less folding required,
- superfast drying,
- cheap,
- are only suitable for use inside a pocket, never directly against
the skin, because of their super absorbing qualities,
- can be quite squishy (i.e. they absorb a very large amount but are not as good at holding on to it. The usual recommendation is to double them up with a natural fibre such as cotton or hemp, as these are much better at locking in the moisture. Many people use one microfibre towel with one hemp prefold behind it as a great overnight nappy.)

Hemp prefolds
- very trim,
- very absorbent,
- less folding required,
- antibacterial and antifungal properties,
- 1 or 2 needed at night, depending on how much your baby wets,
- not as fast to dry as squares,

Also fuzzi's tend to hold thier value so resale is normally really good!!

I haven't worried too much about spending the money on different sizes mainly because we're planning on 2 or 3 children so I know we'll make our money back using them all that time.

Sounds good... my friend's babe went from small fuzzis to using borrowed petites for a month or so, then onto size large. i thought i would post a link to the snazzipants website comparison chart re the diff types of nappies. It also apparently has videos now too. It has pros and cons for all the nappy systems and because they stock all types of nappies they dont have a bias towards any.

and then once you have sorted out what types of nappy you like then the fun of what brand starts....
