As far as I remember, it did say there was a small possibility of the sperm making it through and therefore a chance of a fertilised egg getting through, and that's where the IUD also works by preventing implantation.

I might go and do a bit more research on this as while it is a valid concern about "abortion" or feelings towards fertilisation of eggs... I think it is necessary to be clear about the process so that if there is an issue with something like this, then one can make an informed decision.

(Not necessarily you Deb, I've just heard some young teen mums talking about the IUD like this and I am concerned that they'd forgo contraception because of something like this and then end up with an unwanted pregnancy.)

    Author: caraMel
Subject: 4606
Posted: 27 November 2006 at 10:10am

I asked my doctor about how the copper IUD worked when she suggested it to me as an option, as I had heard the same as Jax. She told me that new research has proved that that is untrue and gave me a booklet that explained what they know now, that the IUD creates an environment that is toxic to sperm.

I also found this on the web, similar to what is in the booklet so I don't need to type it all out! :

"At first, we thought the IUD worked by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg, but that turned out not to be true. It makes sense to think that the IUD would work that way, but research has shown that the egg is in fact never fertilized if a woman is wearing an IUD. Some women have shied away from this form of protection because preventing implantation of a viable fertilized egg could be seen as a form of abortion. But that concern is not valid since the egg is not fertilized (every month you destroy an unfertilized egg through menstruation, after all!)

So what do we think is going on? The best theory right now is that the IUD works by inducing a low-grade infection or at least some irritation in the uterus, the by-products of which are toxic to sperm. Research shows that women wearing IUD's are producing cells and proteins and other substances in their uteruses which attack the cell walls of sperm, thus preventing fertilization. The inflammation supposedly persists only as long as you have the IUD in place, although some women seem not to recover from it."

I hope that is helpful in some way!

Edited by caraMel

The regular IUD prevents a pregnancy from implanting in the uterus and therefore the embryo cannot survive and you then shed the lining of your uterus (and have a period) as per "normal". My personal feeling is that there is 'life' from conception onwards, and I couldn't bring myself to interfere with that. I know that the pill and depo etc interferes with the conception process too, but it does so in a different way - that said, as I mentioned before I am trying to avoid having *anything* in my body that I don't need, including the pill, Mirena, Depo etc Hope this answers your question Deb. I have been told by my dr and the hospital Never to have one again as my body rejects it for some reason. I guess my option (not that I am thinking of having sex for a very long time LOL) is the pill or dep o (which I haven't been on that so might give it a go some time) I did think about telling the DR when he did the ceasar to tie my tube (I only have one) while he was in there but dunno if I am ready for that yet, I mean Rhyley is my last but.... I dunno thats so final.
(thats including the preliminary swabs they have to do)
It lasts for 5-7 years though and I worked out the costs of pill plus period supplies for that time and Mirena is about half the cost of that!
It was only painful for me for a couple of days afterwards. Just mild period like cramps.
The actual insertion was uncomfortable like a smear with a couple of stingy moments as they put it in place.
I had minimal bleeding afterwards for a day, and a week later have just got a light period. (no cramps or anything with it!)
The initial side effects you can get are similar to those you would get with the minipill (same hormone) and usually only last for the first 3 months.
I'm really happy with my decision, as I don't plan to have more children in the next 5 years.
Hope this helps!

Edited by caraMel

Mine is more for the problems I have had with endo. To qualify for the mirena at no charge your iron levels need to be very low. Cost is about $300 and then you may be charged an fee to have it put in. Not all dr's can put it in, I know in Palmy only gyno's can put it in. It lasts 5 years (and from memory you want more children soon so may not be an option for you just yet if you have to pay the full price for it) but can be taken out at any stage. Goggle Mirena with a NZ search and it'll come up. There is one website that has a list of people all over NZ that can get it and put it in you.
