Author: Katherine
Subject: 4697
Posted: 03 December 2006 at 5:17pm

You have every right to be annoyed! A couple of weeks ago my nephew got chicken pox, and my SIL was still taking him everywhere -- out to restaurants, over to the grandparents' house, to the shops, etc. It made me SO MAD. She was supposed to bring him over to play with Em and I had to call and ask her not to because I didn't want Em exposed to chicken pox yet. SIL got all snippy with me, telling me that her doctor had told her my nephew wasn't contagious once the spots were showing, and that he wasn't *that* sick. I actually had to call my Plunket nurse, my daughter's GP AND the National Immunisation people to get info on chicken pox before SIL would believe that *maybe* she should have kept my nephew home...

That said, it took me a lot of courage to ring her up and ask her not to bring my nephew over, because I hate confrontations! It is really, really insensitive of your brother and SIL to take your nephew to a family gathering when he has a contagious illness. Especially because exposure to chicken pox can be really bad for people with compromised immune systems (elderly people especially) and pregnant women! Can you get up some courage to call and tell your brother, gently but firmly, that bringing his ill child is not good for anybody involved?

I don't know where she got them from as was not at daycare and her brother had had them years before. There is a slight chance she won't get them and if you wanted to go you could try and keep her as far away for the pox child (sorry dunno their name) When Brooke got them a friend whose baby was the same age brought her around and put them right together in the contagious time and the other kid didn't get them - very surprised as she was exposed to Brooke for quite some time.
But I would if you are not happy to talk to your Brother. Not dair on others if they aren't happy with it either

I am sure that any adults that have not yet had them would not appreciate it either.

Have you told your brother you are worried about it?

And have you had any contact with the kidlet in the last few weeks? I'm pretty sure chicken pox are contagious for about 10 days before the spots show.
