Author: Maya
Subject: 5060
Posted: 02 January 2007 at 9:16pm

Yep, I second what Peace said about the wheat - it is recommended that atopic babies (prone to allergies in one form or another) avoid cows milk, egg and wheat for at least the first 12 mths, and peanuts till at least age 3.

Without actually seeing the rash it's hard to say whether it is an allergy or not, but if it was a series of red bumps that looked like insect bites with swelling around them and/or swelling of the mouth and lips then it is definitely an allergy. That sort of reaction will occur within minutes of contact with the particular trigger and last for up to several hours.

If it was more like an exczema rash then it could be teething rash, or even a delayed reaction to something else Ella has had as that sort of reaction takes longer to develop.

I guess you have two choices - you can either stay away from the couscous for a few months and then retry her with it and see how she goes, or you can offer it to her again and see if the same reaction occurs which will confirm that it is an allergy. I personally wouldn't risk it tho as second and subsequent reactions are nearly almost always worse than initial reactions.

Good luck!

If it was darker at the edges it was probably there a bit longer than an hour. If it was bright pink all over it might be fresher. I would be more inclined to believe that it is dribble rash myself. But (did you know?) that if you are having problems with your gut/intestines then you can get rashes/acne along your jaw so with that in mind: Couscous is basically buckwheat so maybe Ella *might* have an allergy to wheat? Might pay to leave her off the gluten stuff till she is a bit older?
Good luck Mummy Jess!

An hour later when she was due for a bath i saw that near her mouth and on her chin was a red rash. Could this be the new food? Or could it just be that the dribble happened to finally cause a rash on her face at the same time?
