During these early weeks I did wonder if it was sort of bowel related - they can feel like the cramps you get when you need to go #2. When I described them to my mw as a tightening of my belly she said they were BH.

From about 17-30 weeks they were strongest in the evening, and were a good way to be able to feel the lumps of the baby.

More recently they have been strong down the bottom of my belly and enough pressure to sort of squeeze my bladder (or that's what it feels like). I think I've also noticed less BH over the last few weeks, even though everything you read says you get more at this stage. My mw said that was ok.

My midwife said it's harmless, just means that my uterus will be super-toned Our AN class instructor said most people start getting them between 18-28 weeks. Mine just feel like my tummy hardens, I can definitely feel it... like having a ball in my tummy. Usually only lasts about 10-20 seconds (ish)... mine aren't really painful, but again the AN instructor said its different for everyone, there is apparently "no rhyme or reason" to why some people feel them earlier and why some people have more painful ones than others.

BH and contractions both harden your tummy, pressing down (contracting) the uterus. The difference with contractions is that you can also feel them on the inside and that's the 'ouchie'. I didn't realise until pg #3 that BH can also pull a bit in your back, generally they are painless.

I had BH from 20 weeks with pg#1 and pg#3 but only in the last week or so with #2 - barely at all. They get harder as you get closer to birth. Apparently they are actually there from as early as 6 weeks but not able to be felt until later on.

Don't usually get them in the first pregnancy so when you get them in the second its a little shock. Period pain and very light contractions is a good way of discribing them. Towards the end of the pregnancy you have to keep a watch on them just in case they are the real thing. Usually get them from 25 weeks onwards maybe earlier maybe later just depends.
