I didn't realise solids could aggrivate reflux, I thought if anything things might get better!

    Author: Peace
Subject: 5439
Posted: 29 January 2007 at 2:26pm

I just did a post and lost it
It was a good post too!!!

Ok, again!
Cottage cheese type vomits are a good indicator of reflux. It could be that Alyssa has had a very low grade of reflux up until now and food is aggrivating it. Try staying away from apples and bananas as they are quite acidic and can cause a bit of trouble.
I know what you mean when you say that the description of reflux sometimes fits. Olivia was refluxing from 4-8 weeks hard out and then eased off not so bad till she had her 3 month immunisations and that brought it on REALLY bad.
She would be up for 30mins feeding very slowly, have 30 minutes of playtime during which she would grizzle constantly and be very clingy then spend an hour snacking on and off the bottle till she was tired and back to bed again. She was trying to take small amounts of her bottle to get relief rather than take the whole thing and get bad reflux from it. She did have the arching back and screaming, but only when she was having VERY bad reflux, I actually got told it was wind (which I stupidly believed). When she was needing to go onto Losec a few months down the track she did none of the back arching at all.
I nearly burst into tears to watch my friend come over with her baby who lay on the carpet just playing the whole time so happily next to Olivia who grizzled the whole time. I think that was also another big indicator.
The Gaviscon would be a good idea because it would reduce the vomiting, the Gaviscon hits the stomach and mixes with the stomach acid to form a gel which would stop her refluxing/spilling so badly. I would still get her checked out by a GP though. I left Olivia way too long before she was properly medicated and it is quite evident that it has done her some damage to her oesophagus, as she was a little late talking and when she started on the Losec (which reduces the stomach acid by switching off the pumps that produce it) took a while for her to "come right".

I sound like a broken record but it is no problem having a reflux baby. The problem is getting them correct diagnosis and medical attention. Take you time and think about what symptoms that she has and carefully explain it to your GP. If you are looking for support you will find some great people at Crying Over Spilt Milk
All the best!

Edited by Peace

Months ago we wondered if she did have reflux as she had all the symptoms from the many websites I visited, but the one thing she never did was scream and cry in pain so I assumed it couldn't be the case..she was just ALWAYS grizzly. There were times when I thought I had the grizzliest baby in the world, even sometimes now she is like that all day but I guess with teething thrown in there I put it down to that. Do you think maybe I should start giving her some infant gaviscon?

Anyway, in answer to the questions...She is definitely more grizzly and chucky around 1/2 an hour or so after her solids and generally stays like that until she has done a few little sick ups throughout the day.

The food is definitely liquid enough now as it's just from a jar.. originally I made the farex too thick though

Just wondering if this is a common thing while they're getting used to digesting solids? I know she has always been a little sicky but it just seems to be worse these days. Any ideas if this should settle down?
