Author: Maya
Subject: 5714
Posted: 15 February 2007 at 10:12am

Sorry to hear Hannah is having ongoing probs Aimee - it sucks and it's scary! The cheese thing sounds like what happened with Mercedes after I had some peanut chocolate

Hang in there coz it does get easier - with Maya once she got to about 2 she could 'understand' that some foods made her sick and so knew not to eat anything unless it was specifically given to her. She could recite "no milk, no egg, no peanut, no soy" long before she knew what it meant So I felt a bit better about letting her play with friends etc.

The allergy specialist gave us a chart with a list of Maya's allergies and a step by step action plan for if she had an exposure and it also had a photo of her on it to go up on the wall at daycare/playcentre so that everyone was aware of what to do if she had a reaction. We had two small reactions at PLaycentre (under my supervision but not a single one at daycare as they were so vigilant.

The CDA is around $72 a fortnight and not income tested so anyone can get it if they have a child with a disability that is expected to last 6 (12?) months or more. I get it for Mercedes to help with the cost of the allergy formula and for Sienna's kidney probs and when Maya was smaller we got it for her allergy formula. You don't need to show proof of costs - it's more to recognise the extra care and attention that kids with health isses demand (ie. when Maya was smaller I was very limited in who I could leave her with due to allergy issues).

You may also qualify for a Disability Allowance which is income tested and is a partial reimbursement of costs incurred. It probably won't cover the epipen as that is a "one off" but they will definitely include specialist and prescription costs if you qualify (including Neocate or Pepti Jr).

Hope this helps...

You can usually pick them up for about $120-$130 (I have to have 3 for DD so always shop around). Also, often you can get away with just having oral meds, phenergen and steroids- if you get them in quick enough they can act before you need to use an epipen.

You will be eligible for the child dissability allowance- we got it for DD, it isn't income tested and really helps with the cost. I think it was around $70 a fortnight.
Author: aimeejoy
Subject: 5714
Posted: 14 February 2007 at 7:33pm

Well we went back to the docs this arvo - mainly cos I think Han is allergic to something other than dairy as I cannot get rid of her asthma. So we are getting some skin prick testing done. Although they aren't very keen on doing here in Dannevirke as she is high risk for a serious reaction, most likely will have to go to Palmy Hospital for it. The doctor was mostly concerned about Hannahs reaction on the weekend - I had grated cheese and only touched a couple of peices, washed my hands quickly, but she still got hives and welts all over her torso where I touched her about half an hour later. So now we are getting an epi-pen Hopefully she will not have an anaphylactic reaction, but cos they seem to be getting worse it is better to have one. They cost $200 with a one year shelf life! We have an appointment booked while we are on holiday with a specialist in Auckland ($280 for initial consult! ) and unfortunately we cant afford an epi-pen, specialist and holiday. Will probably cancel the appt, get the testing done in Palmy and go from there - if she comes up with other positives will try and get a public specialist appt closer to home. Otherwise, if its just dairy we are pretty set with a dietician and the epi-pen. We have a great GP who listens to me and trusts what I say (we also work together which helps ). And we came away with all these meds for at home and a form for a child disability allowance! Anyone know how much it is? (Emma?)

Really I am not too worried as I have stayed calm in the last few situations and am not stressing over it, but its more that I feel sad that Han just cant be left to play with friends and I cant relax when we go to someones house with food around.

Anyway...Thanks for listening, gosh I do ramble.
