Wow Emma that is amazing my waters broke at 24 weeks replenished on a week of bedrest then again at 28 weeks and replenished with another week of bedrest, in hospital both times then I bleed at 30 weeks and had my miracle baby girl, we are going to have one more and at the back of my mind is a tiny worry that I could have another premmie.

Yep, apparently she went to the hospital expecting to have him and lose him (her waters broke at 34 and 35 weeks with my other brother and sister and they induced within 24 hours coz of infection risk) and the OB said he would keep her in and give her ventolin and some other drugs to keep labour at bay and get her to 30 weeks. Then at 30 weeks he said "one more week" and so it went on till Mum had had enough of being flat on her back in the Sydney summer heat with no air con in the hospital (it IS 20 years ago!) and Dad had had enough of being at home with 3 under 4 and pushed to have him delivered. She didn't have any more kids after that tho coz they were just getting earlier and earlier and the risks were too high.

Mum's waters broke at 27 weeks with my youngest brother (about to turn 21) and they told her if they couldn't stop the labour he had only a 10 % chace of survival. Yet babies born at 27 weeks gest now often do really well and go on to have few or no complications later on. It's amazing how fast technology develops!

i think the actual statements were that there are no obvious signs of anything wrong yet...but then they cant be sure...

one thing - the 40 week thing is a bit of a misnomer..the states involved actually leave it to themedical professionals discretion as to when they can do it...without a time frame...

Oh Bec's a freind of mine went thru the same thing awhile back, found out at the 20wk scan baby had his heart etc growing outside his body. She went in a week later to be induced & HAD to go through natural labour. So terrible. & you feel soo useless as you cant say or do anything to mak it better.

That gorgeous wee babe is a tru mircle. Blessed be wee 1.

I think in NZ it is legal up until about 24 if for medical reasons - ie findout at 20 wk scan that there is something terribly fatally wrong.

Yeah something like 11 states in the states don't have a cut of time to abort and that is just wrong. I saw this on the news this morning (I think Sky UK can't remember it was early) and they had other babies born at other weeks and some of the problems they have (from memory 22, 23 and 24 weeks). None of them major problems now but they do think that this little miracle will have some problems as well. I was just totally in awe of this tiny being. She is a definite fighter. It goes to show that miracles do happen. Maybe she'll have problems as she grows but for me personally that is nothing compared to the joy and happiness you get just from looking into your child's eyes. I pray for all the very best for the couple. God has truelly blessed them. Isn't it incredible!!! Although I don't know how they can say she won't have any problems - maybe they can say she won't have any physical probs but developmentally and even behaviorally (sp?) they couldn't possibly know just yet! But it always breaks my heart when they have a "cutoff" for viability. Imagine a tiny baby born trying desperately to breathe on its own and a doctor says "No its too early to be viable" when it is obviously proven that they can help them and they do survive! It was scary to think that if I had Ashleigh 10 years earlier or so, she probably wouldn't have been "viable" either. And even though she breathed spontanously at birth would they have not helped her? Sorry that was a bit of a rant!
