I dont think they are that expensive to hire Toni. I hired Zaara's Capsule and I paid $45 for 6 months....held on to it (forgot to return) for 7 months but it was fine!!

I think the normal car seats are even cheeper. May pay to ask! but new is always better and I agree safe and sound Guardian is what I have and its great and reasonably priced!! Our current car seat was part of the Licencing trust ones where I only had to pay Plunket $25 admin fee (Trust issues them to Plunket).

I didn't know you could hire them? Might work out more expensive than buying brand new

I brought a 2nd hand one from a garage sale (I nes the people so was happy to buy it) before piper was born and took it to plunket to get it checked out and they said they had to destroy it as it would not be safe to use because of the age (it was about 6 years old) & it seamed to be weakening in a few spots on the plastic. Like caraMel said, they advise you not to use a carseat that is more than 10years old.
Im personally not worried about second hand carseats as long as you know the history.
Totally off the subject... .. what does worry me about carseats is incorrect use; ie tether straps not being used and forward facing far too soon!! So when you calculate 10 years, make sure she can still use it for the whole time she'll need it - 3-5yrs. I wouldn't buy a s/hand one unless I knew and trusted the owners' advice on it's history. They say you can't always see accident damage with your eye.

I am with Nikki...I wouldnt buy a 2nd hand one simply because you dont know the history. But I am also a bit (ok alot) paranoid.

But if you know some one who are selling one and you know the history then it should be ok. The law says you cannot use a carseat that is more than 10 years old. Apparently after that the straps and plastic can begin to deteriorate. (I asked about this a few weeks ago )
My Hubby was talking about getting one secondhand off trademe but I was a bit nervous for the same reasons as Nikki, so we bought a new one last weekend.

My mum got one from a friend of her's (so knew the history) to have in her car so that we didn't have to worry about taking ours out all the time when she has Andrew. I think if you can get the history of it then it would be ok. would you buy one?

Mum & Dad have been using Caitlin's old car seat but that only goes up to 9kg, she weighed in at 9.1kg last weekend so I don't want her in it anymore for safety reasons.

I want to get another car seat for them to use (we've got the one you get from Plunket for $25) but I'm a bit worried about making sure we get a decent one.

What age do they start to deteriorate (making then unsafe) more than 3 years old?
