Today is my baby brothers 21st birthday, Mum went into labour with him at 27 weeks and was told if they couldn't stop her labour he wouldn't survive (they stopped it and she was in hospital til her was delivered at 36 weeks by c-sect). And yet now even smaller and younger babies survive thanks to amazing medical technology.<br /><br />Wishing you and Aidan a smooth ride from here on out Trish.]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=2644">Tastic</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 6354<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 26 March 2007 at 12:20am<br /><br />Ive just found my Discharge letter which the hospital gave me, And thought Id share it with you so you can get an Idea of what my 'miracle baby' has been though.<br /><br />Baby Watton was admitted to the Neonatal Service on 11/26/06, The Gestation was 26+5 weeks with a birth weight of 1135g (2lb 8oz) He required level 3/2/1 care (3= intensive care unit)<br /><br />Diagnoses During Admission:<br />Extreme Prematurity<br />Footling Breech Position<br />Bruised at Delivery<br />RDS requiring ventilation (not breathing basically), 2 doses of <a href="http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000642.html" target="_blank">Curosurf</a><br /><a href="http://lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/respire/cld.html" target="_blank">Severe Chronic Lung Disease</a> - Required dexamethasone for extubation (Steroids)<br />Jaundice requiring Phototherapy<br /><a href="http://www.ucsfhealth.com/childrens/health_professi&#111;nals/manuals/33_PatDuctArt.pdf" target="_blank">PDA</a> - 2 courses <a href="http://www.ucsfhealth.com/childrens/health_professi&#111;nals/manuals/33_PatDuctArt.pdf" target="_blank">indomethacin</a> - <a href="http://www.allwords.com/word-ligated.html" target="_blank">Ligated</a> 12/10/06<br />Hyponatraemia (Low Sodium)<br /><a href="http://8medical.com/anaemia/" target="_blank">Anemia</a> of Prematurity (Needed 4 blood transfusions)<br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ureaplasma_urealyticum" target="_blank">UreaPlasma</a> treated with <a href="http://www.medicinenet.com/erythromycin/article.htm" target="_blank">Erythromycin</a><br />CONS line Sepsis (Long Line although he had all of <a href="http://www.bliss.org.uk/pagebuild.php?texttype=howbliss_info_medical_catheter" target="_blank">these</a>)<br />Bilateral Inguinal Herniotomies - Repaired 02/13/07, with a wound infection post op<br /><a href="http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gerdinfant/index.htm" target="_blank">Gastro esophageal reflux</a> on Gavicson<br /><br />Respiratory:<br />Aidan was intubated and ventilated at birth and received 2 doses of curosurf, After the first few days his ventilation requirements increased possibly in association with sepsis. On day 10 he had a major episode requiring CPR and ETT Adrenaline for Blocked ETT. He was changed to HFV on Day 13 for Rising C02, and Changed back to conventional ventilation day 17. On day 19 he started Diuretics but needed to be changes back to HFV Day 20<br /><br />Steroids were started day 26, and on day 29(Christmas day!!!) Aidan was successfully extubated to <a href="http://www.bliss.org.uk/pagebuild.php?texttype=howbliss_info_ne&#111;natalequip" target="_blank">CPAP</a>. CPAP stopped day 51, 33+5 weeks corrected, in low flow O2 0.01-0.02l. Off Oxygen day 94, 40+1weeks Corrected. Going home spontaneously Breathing in Air!<br /><br />Sepsis:<br />No risk factors for Sepsis other then prematurity. Had 48hour amoxyl and gent at birth. Day 7 and Day 14 had increased ETT Secretions - Received 48hours cefotaxime and Vancomycin both times.Blood Cultures Negative. Given a course of Fluconazole from Day 15 for Yeasts in urine and erythromycin from Day 16 when ETT secretions grew Ureaplasma. Day 22 coagulase negative staph - treated with vancromycin and Long Line Removed. Day 38 Grew Enterobacter and Coagulase negative Staph on oral secretions in association with pyrexia, treated with a 5 day course ciprofloxacin. Treated with Flucloxicillin for Wound Infection following Hernia Repair.<br /><br /><br /><br />Maternal History:<br />LMP 05/12/06, EDD 02/27/07 by scan. Presented with spontaneous onset labour and progresses rapidly despite <a href="http://www.bchealthguide.org/kbase/topic/detail/drug/hw221970/detail.htm" target="_blank">Nifedipine</a>. Receives 1 dose Betamethasone (steroids)about 6 hours prior to delivery.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ne&#111;natal.org.uk/Parents/Parent+In&#102;ormati&#111;n/Glossary+of+Terms.htm" target="_blank">Glossary of Terms HERE:</a><br />]]>
