Author: miss
Subject: 6392
Posted: 28 March 2007 at 9:43pm

What is the school policy? This year our school shifted to a format whereby the tutor teacher communicates the breakdown of the day to the release teacher (in terms of which block will be spent in which classroom). BT's have always planned the time they are not in class for the release teacher though, as it means there is a consistency of programme for the children. As senior staff I am released .2 and also plan for my release teacher, although there is the odd block I say - do what you like in writing (for example) as I know that she knows my style of programming.

I would never ever think that a release teacher should plan the day, and she should never have asked for your planning - that is highly innappropriate.

Whatever has changed (be it coming from the school to the BT, or simply from the BT) it sounds like the girl needs to learn how to communicate more effectively - consider mentioning the change to the tutor teacher and maybe clarifying where the school stands. It sounds really odd.

I know how you feel tho, when I was working I had a physio student helping on my ward. He ony had to see 3 or 4 patients a day and I had to see 15-20! So he had all day to do what the textbooks say you should do and he used to grill me on what I did with patients that he had seen - so condescending like "did you make sure Mrs X was doing her breathing exercises properly". Grrr, and from a student!!

Sorry, gone OT, but I so know what its like!

I know that for myself, teaching a Year 8 class is insanely busy, and I need my release teacher's support in getting through all the curriculum. One day out of 5 is a lot, especially when another one of those 5 days is spent on education outside the classroom, plus technology and languages and stuff like that. So there's not a lot of time left to fit in everything else!

I know it must be frustrating for you being an experienced teacher, but I guess the BT is feeling very responsible for her class and wants to make sure it all runs smoothly. She is probably stressed out and worrying about continuity for the chn, and getting used to being responsible for "her class". No reason for her to be on a power trip, but I'm sure you can remember the uncertainty of being a BT, and all the new things you have to deal with!

I plan for my release teacher (thats the way my school does it) as we're usually covering specific topics and the timeframe is very tight. It's actually frustrating for me too, when I plan work and it hasn't been taught - though I realise that each teacher teaches differently, and the way I do something isn't necessarily the way my release teacher is going to do things.

However, in playing the devils advocate a bit, I DO think the BT is very lucky to have you as her release teacher, and I do think it's going too far getting you to show her your planning in advance! Did she say why she wants this?

Try not to let it get to you too much!!

ETA: Oops, that was a bit of an essay, sorry about that...

Edited by arohanui
