In some cases knowledge is power, in others it's just good ole paranoia!

I've read so much in my research for OHbaby! and being pregnant with twins made me want to research *everything* I possibly could on twins, and combined with having just had a miscarriage I became super-stressed and anxious.

I remember my midwife telling me one thing or another and me saying "but I was reading..." and she cut me off and said "well don't!"

And in the end we had a better outcome than even the midwife and obstetrician could have predicted - and they're supposed to be the experts!

You'll be fine girl! Author: mum2paris
Subject: 6474
Posted: 01 April 2007 at 12:04pm

Thanks ladies. The main thing for us i think, will be that fact that i again, have to return straight back once the 3 months parental leave pay is up.. mike is studying so i am the only breadwinner, which is scary as hell. He does ALOT, and i mean ALOT of ALOT.. he knows more about their daycare stuff than i do now.. he's always had to do stuff because i have been on placements, so he's got the time thing organised, knows the bedtime routine, knows the dinner stuff, all that - he in fact cooks far better nicer meals than i do sometimes too, we have different tastes so he's the meat and 3 vege guy and i do the fancy stirfrys and things like that. lol.

we are trying to get the girls al ittle more independant at the mo, paris is beginning to get out of nappies for nap time and hopefully will be out at night by november, and she is great and loving dressing herself and bushing her hair etc. I think we just tend to group everything together.

Rachel - you scare me.. I had the same 5hrs then 3.5 hrs, so how on earth can a 1 hour birth be good? apart from the fact it's over darn fast!! lol.. ok, maybe I'll just hope for that then.

Kels - i so know what you mean - i sometimes over-analyse or over diagnose my kids. Mike's my voice of reason. he reminds me to just stop being a worry-wart. lol

With the people mover - we are still going tohave to look into that, as because my income is our only one, the baby is due between semesters for mike so his study money will be zilch, and parental leave pay is far less per week than i usually get. So we will only just break even.. buying a car would not be a good idea as we couldn't make the payments.. it may have to wait till after i return to work. Realistically we don't do much travelling that involves having all 3 in the car at once, chances are we would do things in the mornings while the girls are at daycare (i found sending paris to daycare int he mornings a godsend last time) then afternoon is sleeeep time. lol

I just want to make sure everything is in place so that when i do go back to work, mike doesn't go completely gaga. Hopefully i can get mostly morning shifts which means he's not stuck at home all night with 3 kids by himself.

The birth was the most difficult, but that was because he was so much bigger than the other two (4.02kg compared to 3.54kg and 3.18kg) and didn't quite crown for about 30 minutes. It was a quicker labour though, if you don't count the 10 days of first stage niggles!

I found going from 1 to 2 was easy, going from 2 to 3 was far more challanging! Although, a fair part of that would be that Josiah was still reasonably dependant on me (something that is just starting to change now as he figures out ways to do things himself).

The best thing you can do while pregnant with #3 is take every offer of practical help. Rest as much as possible, even SuperMum needs a break!

There will be times with a newborn you can't go straight to whichever of the older ones that want your attention... don't feel guilty, that's just family life. Prioritising becomes a way of life - just don't forget to make some "just for Janine" time too! Talk to Mike about what sort of needs newborns, toddlers and preschoolers have individually and see if there's a part of the daily routine he can do (Nat's taken over the bedtime routine here so I can relax in the evenings)

Wow, that was quite a ramble! Hopefully there's something useful in it all.

I was alot more sicker and tired when pg, but this could also be due to the fact I was working full time. Labour was longer than #2 but recovered much faster afterwards (had him sunday and was down at the school tuesday dropping off, picking up and kids).

Ive had a good experience with work colleagues changing roles to be my nurse lol. The only prob Ive had is that my plunket nurse, midwife and one practice nurse, treat me like I dont really need their help cos I work in that area. I always reassure them that my nurse hat is well in truly moved and I am mum just like any other (sometimes worse cos I can lose perspective when they are sick and thnk up all sorts of probs lol)

One of the doctors I work with said sometimes its just a case of knowing too much of what can happen. I find myself ringing my nurse asking "what should I do?" or "Do you think?" questions and they are questions I have been rung for myself when working lol.

My older kids are independant so im not much help in the way of how to cope with toddlers and babies

Ive just found things alot more relaxed this time round and Im just enjoying the journey as I already have a career so no need to worry about studying like I had with past pregnancy and newborn bubs.

A BIG congrats again and all the best!!!!

Sorry if its long and rambling, Im not good at writing long post

Kept waiting for it to come lol! Also in the 3rd trimester I was quite freaked out with Briona because I was planning on VBAC but was really worried about a 2nd c/s. I felt a lot better in preparation for Krystiana's birth. (And yea stuff what they all say about no drugs.... )

I found it a bit harder when I was tired with pg #3 because my toddler was sleeping, as with last time, but I now had an older child at home as well. I basically taught Hannah how to play by herself so that when Briona was asleep I could go sleep too.

I find going shopping with the girls not too bad. I prefer the people mover because you don't bang your head so much getting them in LOL! Both my older girls climb into the van themselves, when getting out I start with the oldest and get them to "touch the van" while I get the youngest out.

I really feel like I have truely earned the right to park in the parent parks at Pak n Save now LOL, definitely still using them every week. I put Krystiana and Briona in a baby/toddler trolley and Hannah likes to stand on the end or, if I go at a quiet time, she likes to walk by herself.

My DH may come on here to add his piece. For his part, he's finding each new addition harder (while I find them easier!!). I guess it's because he needs to be more a part of the family with each new child.

Bear in mind that the safest place for a rear facing baby seat is the back row so check out how it will be getting bubs in and out (I put the gremlins in thru the boot over the back seat). It's something to do with the way the middle row moves that makes it not as safe for rear facing seats. Oh and that the buggy fits in the boot.

And the capsule is the greatest invention ever. Maybe it's a twin thing but I found it sooo much easier to be able to just pop the capsules into the trolley or carry them than to get the pram out, get two babies out of their seats and into the pram, then reverse the process when it was time to go home, all the while with one eye on Maya. The bases that the capsules snap into made life way easier too.

And even tho people told me I'd be housebound for the first 6 mths we do actually get out and about a lot. That was my biggest fear. But it's just a matter of planning. And I have had to accept that while routine is great in theory (after Maya the clockwork mouse) sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

Of course all of this may come in handy if you end up with twins

    Author: emeldee
Subject: 6474
Posted: 31 March 2007 at 9:11pm

Hi Janine,
Congratulations and welcome to the family of five club. My third birth was thankfully slower (six hours or so) than the second (two hours), possibly because I had an epidural. After going it the long way with the first two, I had relaxed a bit about what everyone thought I should be doing and went into things with an open mind and a request for an anaesthetist. I think in one sense by number three you get a little more respect from the medical teams involved and have a little more control over things. Then again, it may be that by number three you're more assertive with what you'll compromise over. My experience is that it was the best birthing experience I've had. Absolutely brilliant, bonded well and loved him to bits from first site.
Morning sickness wasn't as bad, the tiredness was but that was more about chasing toddlers. As a baby, number 3 (we'll call him Connor for the sake of personalising the story a little) is completely different from his brothers, but a little similar too. He's gorgeous and has been great fun. We've had dramas with breastfeeding, but we've made it through.
A friend of mine with her third is absolutely having a blast with her little guy too. The family of five logistics are a little bit different - fitting the kiddies into a standard car is challenging (we have a people mover now :( ) and I don't even think about going out shopping by myself yet! That being said, another friend with three girls (6, 4, 2) is out and about all the time and loves it all so much she's pregnant with #4.
Best of luck with your new bundle
Maree
