Ok, I am bumping this again. Maya, I am taking the microgenics pregnacy multivitamin. It has vitamin A in it. Is it OK, or should I stop taking once I fall pregnant and switch to something without it.

OKy doky, have done some fishing, and according to the US FDA (Food and Drug Authority) levels up to 10,000IU per day are safe during pregnancy. The Beta Carotene form of Vitamin A found in vegetables etc. is safer than the Vitamin A found in meat products such as liver, so pregnant womeb are advised to limit, or avoid, eating meats high in Vitamin A.

Also, I have done some searching on Prenatal vits, and 5000IU seems to be the standard level.

I am taking a pregnancy multivit made by Microgenics. I tok Thompsons Pregnacare when I was pregnant with Maya, and planned to do the same this time, but the lady in Health2000 recommended the Microgenics one as being better. Elevit also has a good reputation.

I'm bouncing this old post because I'm interested in hearing everyones opinions about vitamins. I've bought some vitamins in preperation for TTC, but I'm all stressed out now because I'm worried they have too much vitamin A in them.
They are special pregnancy vitamins (Pregnacare from twinlabs) so I would have they'd be okay but they say they have 8000 IU of vitamin A (3200 beta carotene, 4800 rentinyl palmate).

Considering that Vitamin A is in food like milk anyway I think these tablets will have far too much, as I've read 5000 IU is an upper limit before you start increasing risk of birth defects.

Anyone looked into this much before?

southern cross seems to be quite good. i don't have insurance (yet) but before having hannah i was under my dad's policy adn they paid for me to have my wisdom teeth out. it would have cost a fortune otherwise because i had to travel to hamilton to see an oral surgeon. (damn crooked teeth!!)

they also have quite good deals in their magazines that they send out. i was after some new glasses and they had a special discount with OPSM on frames and lenses. I have Ultracare 100 with Southern Cross, which is $117 a month for Maya and I. It covers 100% of the cost ofGP visits, prescriptions up to an annual limit (which is really high), Specialist visits (up to a limit of about $200 per visit) and surgical. It also covers $100 worth of dental and Optical each year.
We don't have medical insurance for Mona, and she has had lots of problems with her ears, and we have spent years in the public system waiting months to see specialists and have surgery etc. She has been waiting for an op since Feb 03. It is so reassuring to know that with Maya everything is covered, and with all her allergies etc. we can see private specialists because Southern Cross pays. I also get up to $1000 per pregnancy for related costs, which was good to know when I had Maya as we had to have a specialist consult at 36 weeks.
Southern Cross won't cover pre-existing conditions (that you already have) or anything diagnosed within a set period of taking out insurance, but if you register your newborn within a short time after birth they are covered for everything, even problems that they are born with.

I am on Regular care too.
It covers 80% towards all your GP Visits and Meds (most meds) and yes up to a certain amount towards specialist....I hope I never need the surgical bit.
It is good because if you think about it all the cost do add up.
It costs me around $67 a month (My Husband and I).

I did not believe in life insurance, but I might have to reconsider that when my baby is born.

we are with southern cross and robs work pays for it. Its the regular care so it covers gp visits,perscriptions and surgical and certain amounts towards specialists. I dont think we need this kind of cover but seeing that its all paid for then its okay. If we did have to pay i would just go for surgical. See, my Elevit was prescribed and Southern Cross said that Elevit is not part of their list so it is not covered. I know Folic Acid is covered.
They said all pregnancy cost is covered upto $250.
But so far I had 2 scans and they were both free. In Manurewa THC they do all pregnancy scans for free. Southern Cross will only cover it if you get them on prescription but your midwife can prescribe some particular combinations of vitamins and iron and folic acid which should all be covered depending on your policy.

kewl - thanks guys. I have seen the elevit ones but they are too $$$ at this point. I think i have been looking at the pregnacare ones.    I plan on taking them while breastfeeding as well, just because this time i have so much more going on and i think i struggled to keep myself healthy last time - so figure this time i need a little something more.

I was recommended Elevit. HAve been taking them since 1 week after finding out about pregnancy. you have to be careful especially in early pregnancy what you take, you shouldnt take vit A as it has been linked to heart problems. I took Thompsons Pregnacare with Maya, and they were great because I couldn't keep anything down the whole time so at least I knew she was getting her nutrients. My uncle used to be the president of the National Charter of Health Practitioners (naturopaths etc.) and he says the Thompsons are the best.

Apparently the thompsons are the best. I used them all they way through when i was pregant with Alyssa. With Jayde i used whatever was on special, the Blackmores and the pluravit. Blackmores are cheaper but have less tablets so it works out more expensive. Hey there, i think there was a post about this a while ago, you're probably thinking "isn't it a bit late for her to be thinking about preg vitamins NOW?" lol. I'm on iron but want to start getting a few more vits on board so hopefully i don't get as horribly sick, white and puffy as i did last time after i had paris. but which ones are best - has anyone tried both sorts? which are smaller?, nicer tasting?, better value?, more efficient? whatever..
