Sure is! Micheals biggest problem was nose bleeds we had to send him to school with jelly beans as he would get light headed after having 5 or 6 nose bleeds while there. They quarterised every blood vessel in his nose so since then touch wood he's been fine. Hopefully the tests were right and Kiya hasn't got it. Things have changed lots in the last 20 years... when I was tested, that was the only way to do it, and they did all the same tests to my parents and extended family to find out who has von Willebrands... turns out its my Dad, one of his sisters, my Grandad and I think it skipped a generation to one of my cousins (but I'm not positive about that). My sister (who is 10 years younger than me) also has it.

I've had Kiya tested, all they did was draw some blood and send it off to the lab... so much less stress and hassle! It came back negative, but Nathaniel and I have some doubts as to whether or not that's accurate, as she's showing some of the things that I did at her age that sent my parents searching for answers in the first place. But that's beside the point...

As you said earlier, von Willebrands affects people differently. My Dad gets monster nose bleeds where they last for hours and he just lies on the floor with a couple of towels under his head to soak up the blood. My sister gets really heavy periods, but that seems to be the only effect so far (she's 14). Personally, it hasn't been a problem for me so far, until I was pregnant. Our family haemotologist told us that it self-corrects in pregnancy, and I had absolutly no complications with the births of either of my children but... birthing centers will not allow me to deliver there, I have to go to the hospital. Becca ouch! Iv'e just read one of your earlier posts where you said you hated needles and mentioned some of the tests you had done. All Micheal had done was a whole heap of blood tests. The specialist mentioned other tests, however because of the ops etc and no serious problems with bleeding, just a little more than usual, he suggested we leave it until Micheal is a teenager, and just keep it on the medical records and mention it to doctors etc at treatment. But man you sound like you had it really tough. At least with micheals main vision problem it was a fluke of nature. Apart from his squint nothing else is common in our family or can be passed down., so a quick check for the first couple of months of Jayden and abbys eyes was all that was needed. Poor you, you must rip your hair out everytime maya gets sick. Basically just like an ear infection - grizzling, pulling at the ear, and in older children you might notice that they aren't hearing so well. Glue ear tends to be the result of persistent ear infections, apparantly the way Maori eustachean tubes are designed they are more prone to blockages. And even tho Mona's ORL specialist has told us there is absolutely nothing we could have done to prevent Mona's hearing loss, I am obsessive about Maya's ears and nose, and I always take her to the doctor if I even suspect she might have an ear infection. Good on Mona! We have had lot's of bullying with Micheal and then,some kids are just annoying going up to micheal and waving there hands in his face saying "can you see that can you see it" Some kids can be nasty. He is the same behaviour wise at school one on one he's great, not so good otherwise. As far as all his problems go, the way I figure it we are lucky woth micheal! Sounds like you have had quite a journey with Micheal Vick. I agree with what you said about partial sight or hearing being viewed as 'less' of a disability than people who are totally blind/deaf. At her last school Mona was forever being picked on by the teachers because of her behaviour, yet when she was in one on one classes with the teacher aide she was fine. She once hit another boy because he teased her about failing a test, it was listening comprehension - how can she comprehend what she can't hear? But the school were so hardline on it, they wanted to stand her down for 3 days, but I fought them on it, and eventually we got so sick of it that we pulled her out and put her in a smaller country school where she is doing really well.

Janine - wouldn't it be great if the government actually directed some funding somewhere useful. Somany kids, especially at primary, hav eproblems with hearing due to glue ear, grommets etc. but there is so little support. Most kids can be fixed with grommets, but unfortunately Mona is one of teh 5% that they fail.

Maria - I hope Jayde's barium swallow gives you some answers. The waiting and not knowing is the hardest part, but if she is more settled on the Pepti then that suggests that she has some kind of intolerance or allergy. I really feel for you, coz I so know what it's like, and with Alyssa as well you must be exhausted. Would you believe no one in my family will take it seriously so no they haven't been teasted. And unfortunately I have no idea where micheals natural father is. We split when I was pregnant and he dropped off the face of the earth.(not such a bad thing) I do remember his paternal grandfather had alot of problems with bleeding though. My other two are Ok so I am thinking it possibly comes from his side. We really only know the basics about it as he was tested two years ago. He's not classed as severe so that's got to be a good thing. Now that his exzema has cleared up due to age and since he has had his nose op he's doesn't seem to bad. We have good support for Micheal. However a lady from the blind foundation told me that because Micheal can see, He can see the very top line on the chart, He falls into a grey area, as people are very aware of completely blind people, however the awareness for partial sight is quite low. People asume because he can get around there is nothing wrong with him. Don't ever feel guilty Emma, your right you can't save the world but you can help your children. Orrs only fund 1 percent of disabled children in New zealand, which is not nearly enough. It's about time the govt started thinking about kids as they reacon they are the future. Micheal won a trip through the edge radio station a few years ago for children with disabilities. He went with 13 others and we felt really bad some of these kids were really bad but when we thought about it he's had more than his fair share of problems. He had chronic ezema since he was born he used to be raw from the neck down, and had to go to bed in wet body stockings he used to get up covered in blood, he's had and eye op, nose op, hernia op, he's been sedated and under general for tests 8 times he's boarder line von willerbrands and he's legally blind. But man he has the greatest personality. They told me the barium was flavoured so she may be okay. She is terrible to feed anyway so hope its no worse than usual. The pepti is going well. We have our number now so much cheaper. They put her on AR formla and that was horrible i dread to think of the damage it did, she would scream for ages even after i gave it to her. So been back on pepti for a couple of weeks now and have doubled her losec dose, and I thought things were going much better but we had a terrible day yesterday, but i guess they happen. I just wish she would get better. I was so looking forward to the whole breastfeeding thing. But the only good breastfeeds she gets is in the middle of the night. Oh well thats my moan for the day. We are off to buy about 200 trees this morning. Maya never had one, but my brother had several and Mum said the hardest part is getting them to swallow the barium coz it is thick and gunky and doesn't taste nice. But from what I've heard the actual procedure itself isn't too major. It will probably be easier too with Jayde being so young coz she can't really wriggle and squirm quite so much.

Yay Maria, that's great! The barium swallow is awful, but worth it if you can get some answers.
It is frustrating with Mona, but we have had good support from some agencies. She's been to health camp twice for six weeks a pop and SES arranged funding for her FM system. yep it is. We were turned down for orrs funding for Micheal's schooling. So I wrote to everybody and anybody complaining, and bombarded the ministry of education, with medical records etc and we eventually got it. If we don't fight for our kids who else is going to. i have found that phoning helps. I just phoned the reception at imaging this morning and she told me that there would be a 4 to 6 week wait for Jaydes barium swallow. When i explained our situation with her feeding and weight etc. She was more than happy to ask the doctors if they could see her sooner. And is going to phone me back with hopefully an apt next week. We have been so lucky with public hospital. Apart from a year wait for his eye squint operation. Micheal got in straight away for his hernia op and only had to wait for a month for his nose operation. He's been to nearly every childrens department in the hospital and we've been very lucky to get in to see the various speacilist quickly. Hopefully you don't have to wait to much longer. Nope, she has had 2 myringoplasty already, one on each side, but they failed (ie. the patch came off) so she now has to have them repeated. She had her last surgery 2 weeks before Maya was born, so that's over 2 years ago. Now we are just sitting on the waiting list for surgery

wow it's interesting to hear someone else having similar problems. When Micheal was at daycare they asked us to get him tested for ADHD! But it was as simple as they wouldn't accept his disability or try to understand it. We thought about moving him to a smaller school to see if he copes better, but we are worried about how he would cope with the change. Mona has similar behavioural problems - she has all the signs of ADHD but they are not caused by ADHD but actually by her frustration at not being able to hear. She has a special FM system where she wears headphones and her teacher wears a microphone so that she can hear better at school, and she has just this year started at a new, smaller school and seems to be coping better there.

We are the same. Micheal goes to normal school, However he get's so frustrated with his vision that he has lots of temper tantrums etc his behaviour can be very time consuming and tiring. At first I felt really bad as I felt that I was a bad mother because I was enjoying the breaks, But everyone needs a bit of sanity every now and then. You should still be entitled with Mona, Emma, despite her age. My brother has just turned 12 and my parents get respite care for him... he attends a normal school during the day so they get a break then too... but every other weekend he goes for "care" and then the whole family gets some proper time apart (and together - when he's in care, my 14yo sister gets to spend some quality time with my parents). I got 28 days of Respite Care for Maya in the first 12 mths after she got sick, but I didn't end up using it all because I didn't need it. At the time when Maya was sick it would have been great, because I really needed the break, but by the time it was organised she was better and I didn't feel that we needed it.

I don't know if we're entitled with Mona, but because she's so much older, she's less intense, she goes to school so we get a break, whereas with Maya, the nature of her condition means she has to stay home from daycare and so it's full on 24 hours a day.

Make sure you do angelnz, we get ours for Micheal as he's legally blind and we only found out about the allowance by accident. It's sad that they don't give everyone what they are entitled to when they are entiitled to it. So make sure you push for it. Depending on what's wrong with your child you may qualify for respite care as well. We get 30 days a year paid for by the ministry of health, where we can send Micheal to anyone even family members and they get paid $75 for a minimun of 8 hours. It was an absolute godsend when we had abby.   Micheal usually goes to my mum's for the weekend and gets paid $150-00. Maya I'm assuming with Mona you should be entitled to it if your not already getting it. Maria, if you're talking about the Child Disability Allowance, you are definitely entitled. It's $74 a fortnight and it doesn't depend on income at all, anyone with a sick or disabled child can get it, I get for Maya for her allergies, and also for Mona as she is legally deaf.

I found my cleaner thru an agency that a friend recomended. They came while I was out at Playcentre this morning, and it was soooo nice to come home to a clean house! Maya did the same thing - posterior, then turned anterior, then engaged, then FINALLY came out. Pity the whole process took 41 hours...

I've been told that second babies are much less likely to be posterior, and I cling to that coz I don't want another posterior pregnancy and labour next time round! shhhhh i have got a cold back again just  a blocked nasal passage and a cough tho,had a sore throat and was loosing voice but thats gone.

In answear to your question Xandersmum My first and second labour (can't count the third C-section) were completly different. With my first the contractions came on hard and fast but lasted 9 hours and he took an hour to push out. The second I didn't even know I was in labour until 1/2 and hour before he was born and he took two pushes. We just made it to the hospital. You guys will probably find you be heaps more relaxed this time around as you know sort of what's going to happen. I think that is what i am scared of. i dunno why, cos last time it was intense, but it wasn't pain, just a really icky cold nervous feeling.. as i've said to Becs, I keep thinking i'm gonna end up having this one at home cos i didn't really feel much till the last few cms last time.. i only rung the midwife for some reassurance..so glad i did.

I've had a heap of pressure in my hips the last few days which is making me a bit jumpy, lol, but apart from a little nesting nothing else.. so I don't think you have any worry about me having baby before you Becca. lol. If it did, I think even i would be pissed.. cos you've been having contractions for ages now.. it just wouldn't be right!! Still, off to see midwife tomorrow so we'll see whats happening with this monkey then.

mine was totally different this time. My hind waters broke the day before. And i was probably about 7cm before it got really full on pain. Then it was really painfull...... but really fast birth.

Even tho I love being preggers I am excited about meeting baby!!

It feels like she is down quite low cos I can feel the pressure on my pelvis but shes still just sittin at the brim hmmmmmm..............

just out a curiosity if any one who has more than one kid,did ur labours start the same or were they different??? I had no show or waters leaking just strait into contractions 1-5 mins apart.If I feel 'wet" I go check but it is just the extra discharge (I think I am just being a bit paranoid lol).

I think the recommended dosage for Red Raspberry Leaf Tea is 2-3 cups per day in the last trimester, but if prone to early labour then wait till the the last 5 weeks. Also if you take 5W herbal supplements, it is supposed to do wicked things for one's uterus toning and other such good stuff to aid in delivery and recovery afterwards. lol, having your waters broken will probably be why you were dialated so quickly.. cos i was the same, except my waters broke by themselves, 5 days before my due date. once your waters break it not only forces baby onto your cervix with no cushioning, but also the fluid is full of all the lovely hormones to make you dilate quicker, well that's the theory. i just drunk about three cups a day. I was fully dilated in two and a half hours....also, as for it inducing labour, my midwife had to break my waters two weeks after due date

Hey funny you should suggest that lizzle - I just went and brought some raspberry leaf tea.. I'm usually a milo drinker. I never used it last time, so can anyone tell me how often you're supposed to have it?
