Yep Susieq, the closet thing in Auck is the Plunket Family Centres. Before going to Mothercraft, I went up to Auck in mid-jan and stayed with my parents for 2 weeks, and I got into the northshore Plunket Family Centre. I found it really worthwhile also, but there is only so much help they gave give you in one day. Mothercraft was definatly much more intense and over a much longer time,..and during the night so it was great.

It really annoys me as an ex Karitane Nurse why Plunket ever closed the Karitane Hospitals around the country and opended the plunket/karitane centres which are open only during the day.

In the Hospitals where we trained we had a Mothercraft ward, general wards for babies who were feeding or sleeping problems and a prem ward.

There is to my knowledge no such Mothercraft unit in Auckland and I think there is a need for something like that or the old karitane Hospitals.

A Dr comes to the unit on Wed morning and the nurses discuss everyone thats there, and then we got to see him for review of Isla's reflux which was great as we were still on the waiting list to see a Paed at our hospital here.
Out of the 6 of us there, 2 of them had one other child, one lady had 3 other children, one was a 15 year old mum to a tiny prem baby, then their was me and one other first time Mum.
So you dont have to worry about it! Every baby is different, just because you have already had one, doesnt mean you should feel like you should know everything, and shouldnt accept help.

As much and all as I keep thinking I just dont need that being second time around Mum and all ..I am thinking its probably just what I need.

I guess if its just a bad habit he has or if he really is hungry they will know...

Yep I went in the last week of Feb, when Isla was 4 1/2 months old. I have just bumped a thread for you which I started asking the same question.

We went because Isla was still really unsettled day and night. I hadnt had more than about 2 hrs sleep in a row since she was born, and we were at our wits end as to what to do.

There were 6 mums with their bubs in at the time, but I think it can take 9. They take babies from birth to one year. For feeding or sleeping problems, or for prem or sick babies who come out of hospital and go there as a transition to home, and for parenting education for teens mums.
It has a really homely feel to the place not hospital like at all. You go from mid morning Mon, to mid morning Fri. Bubs sleeps in your room in the day, but they move them into spare rooms at night, so you get rest. Your room has a single bed, a bed side cabinet, wardrobe, and a sink and mirror. Shower/toilets and laundry facities are communal. There is a big lounge with tv, toys, and parenting info and books and videos.
All meals are supplied. There are 3 shifts for the nurses, and you generally are asigned the same one for each shift each day.You have a meeting with your nurse when u first arrive, after completeing admission papers, and answering questions about your babies rountines, any health probs, your birth etc. You discuss you answers with the nurse and make a plan for what you would like to get out of you week.
During the day they encourage the mothers to go out while baby sleeps to have a break. I went out for coffee a few times with the other mothers and went shopping! Was the first time I had had any break.
A few times I got frustrated and upset because they were wanting me to try something which I had given a go once or twice but hadnt work,..but I just reminded myself that what we were doing at home obviuosly wasnt working or we wouldnt be there, and that they were experienced,..and it always did work out!
We have learnt so much from our time their which has made us all much happier. We are so grateful for what they did for us, and only wish we had gone earlier.

Hi All
Has anyone been here? If so what for and did it work?? What do you do all day and is it really "strict" there?


Paedatrician has been wanting to refer me for a few months now but keep putting him off as I am sure I can sort Blake out (somehow)...However the last visit he has sent a referral through as I am not getting anywhere fast with this little man. And apparently looking bit worse for wear!! (must get some thicker makeup) LOL!

Blake is a happy funny little man with no probs during the day with sleeping etc..goes along like a dream boy..but the nights are a pain in the bum (totally opposite to when her was little bubba!!!)
