Because we live in an area with a high number of pensioners on fixed income, we are rated quite low on the decile scale so get extra visits. So far we've had home visits at 5 and 7 weeks, were offered one at 9 weeks but I'd been at Family Centre that week so said don't bother, plus 3 and 5 mth ones, and the next one is booked for 7 mths.

    Author: Katherine
Subject: 7179
Posted: 04 May 2007 at 4:12pm

Bombshell, as a new mum, you are entitled to MORE than the usual amount of Plunket visits, and you don't HAVE to go to the clinic. My Plunket nurse in Mt Roskill came to see me for every visit until we moved over to Botany when Em was just over 8 months old. At the time, we only had one car and it was too hard for me to organise to have the car in order to get to the clinic, so my nurse said, "No problem, we will visit you at home." And she did. I just looked in Em's Plunket book and she came to our place four times -- at 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 5 months. At 8 months, we went to the clinic as we had another car by then.

Like I said, you are also entitled to extra visits as a first-time mum -- so we had a 12-month Plunket visit (because there's a big gap between the 8-10 month visit and the 15-month visit) and when we go for Em's 15-month visit this week, I'll make sure to schedule her for an 18-month visit, even though the next one isn't "supposed" to be until 21-24 months.

I'm not sure if you're going to the Pakuranga Clinic or the Howick rooms -- Em had her 12-month visit at the Pakuranga one, and I was really disappointed in the difference between it and the Mt Roskill one. The Pakuranga clinic is in the mall, upstairs, in a quite run-down suite of rooms. I couldn't imagine going to a coffee group there, to be honest. But the nurse we saw (Fleur) was lovely and spent heaps of time with us at the visit, and I didn't feel rushed or degraded at all. But I think it depends on who you get. My former Plunket nurse in Mt Roskill was awesome too, so I was worried about meeting the new one over here -- but I think we got lucky.

It can sometimes me a pain to measure and weigh a comfy baby but it's not all that many times and I try to make the change as easy as possible - me do as much hands-on as I can (so they don't get a fright with the "new lady") and feed first, even if it's only a half feed.

As the children get older it's good to have a double-check of what and how much they're eating but I take all their advice as opinion and I probably don't really get any more out of what they say than on here . And when Briona got malloscum the Plunket nurse had no idea what it was so I needed to go to the Doc about it anyway.

Or that the office gets their act together very quickly!
I too was very skeptical about Plunket after hearing a few bad stories from other people, but I have to say that our Plunket nurse is fabulous.
We got the two home visits, she always makes sure I know I can book a Karitane nurse visit in between the Plunket ones (it's a long time between the 5 month and 9 month visits!) and in Hamilton we can go into the main office and weigh our bubs ourselves on their scales, which I've found useful.
We see the same nurse every time and she is always on time and very helpful, asks good questions and picks up on things we are having trouble with, always happy to talk about even the smallest of things and either sympathise or suggest different methods. She is around my age and has two kids.
What really sold me was when I went in to the main Plunket office last week to weigh DD and ask about a solids course, and my Plunket nurse happened to be there seeing someone else. She overheard me mention to the receptionist that I've been having some trouble with DD sleeping and the next day I got a phone call from her at home to check and make sure eveything was ok and that we were coping, and suggest a few things. So brilliant and just made me feel a million times better.
So a big to Hamilton Plunket. Nearly every time I've dealt with them I've come away happy.
That said, I've heard other people haven't been so happy, but they are in different suburbs so it really is dependent on who you deal with.

Our plunket nurse has been quite good eg coming to visit us twice and keeping her appoitment times to the dot etc but I don't think I have found the visits generally that useful. Most of the things she told me, I had already read about in books etc and I haven't really had any questions to ask her so maybe that's why. She just tends to measure Gina which annoys her to no end as she hates being naked and then proceeds to scream for the duration of the visit. LOL. WTF!!!) and gave me list of days etc and three clinics near me! So much for two visits!

She did tell me to complain tho - apparently they have lost staff and not been replaced...so she sounded P off too. I think that office is doing a huge disservice to plunket reputation to be honest so am going to complain - they have a big meeting next week so wil get it in pre that. Might make my 10 week appt first tho LMAO!!!

Got free change mat and under 5 booklet...thats it!!!

Sorry but plunket is SOOOOO not rockin my boat by service i have had!

And you are entitled to two home visits before 12 weeks so make sure they come back, even if it's just to weigh etc. - they get paid for it!

I got the whole domestic violence thing too, my midwife was great, she met Willie and could see that he is just a giant teddy bear, but the visiting Plunket nurse saw a photo on the wall and got all worried. Oh, and then she told me I should make him get a vasectomy - WTF???? So now I take the gremlins back to see the Plunket nurse I had with Maya who actally has half a clue.

She will also ask about your family history of athsma, excema, allergies, all that stuff. And she will ask you questions to rule out PND as well (they took me by surprise last time). She should also make an appointment with you for next time while she is there - if she doesn't, ask her about it. It should be at the 3month mark or even half way between now and then (that's what I had for Krystiana but not the other girls).

My plunket nurse is lovely - although my SIL said hers was just horrible and in the end she ditched them and just went through her GP as her Well child provider. So I guess in the end its just luck of the draw.

When mine came for the 1st time she weighed and measured Elle and checked all her reflexes. Read through her Well child book, and asked lots of questions - I got the do you own your own home one too Fattartsrock, but not the DV one ( i did have a friend here though so maybe would've asked had she not been here), I probably would've been gob-smacked if she had've asked me that.

Hope she's a bit nicer when you meet her.

They also asked me if we own our own home, which i found a bit weird, so I asked why, and she said lots of people who rent move on and leave no forwarding or contact details? Our plunket here is awesome, and I've got the same plunket nurse I have had since Jacob was about 15 months (our old one left to work at hospice and wound up looking after my dad, small world..) She is really nice (about my age) BUT I don't think she has any children of her own?

DEFINATELY ask her about the breath thing, and anything else you wonder about. I must admit, I do sometimes take their advice with a grain of salt, I still ring my m/w if I want to know something, as plunket can be quite rigid about things, more of "most babies like.." instead of "some babies or your baby like..."

Edited by fattartsrock

So be prepared some of the nurses are awesome but some are very old fashioned and stuck in their ways.

If you don't get on you don't have to see her though, the choice is yours.
