DD's hair was quite long when she was born, and it she never really lost it so lucky for me, she was very used to having it tied up. However, as she has gotten older she will put a wee performance on sometimes when it comes to brushing it. She is a really strong-willed girl, so I know what its like to have a battle.
I have found the battle is worth fighting because beautiful curls soon turn to dreds if they aren't brushed for a while. What works really well for us is that I have told her that her hair is absolutely her choice. She can have it anyway she wants...long, short, fringe, no fringe etc. She tells me how she wants it tied up and I do it for her. She seems to enjoy having the decision on how it is done. I say that she has to have it brushed, but she can decide on the style. She is 10 now and it still works really well. I figure hair always grows back and therefore she can be creative with that rather than piercings, tatoos etc in her teen years (well thats the theory anyway). Sometimes you do have to be ok with them leaving the house with a very strange do....if you say its their decision, then you have to stick with it.
Oh and putting a comb through it while the conditioner is still in the hair helps also.

Maya's was straight till about 18 mths too. But the gremlins have fuzzy hair already

Haleighs was dead straight until 10months when the odd curl started to form then onc eshe hit 13months it went into ringlets wee pollyanna ringlets. I love them.

yeah mine is thick and goes frizzy when its short though for osme reason my hairs odd.
I used to straighten mine and make it look nice only for it to rain outside and turn boof

all soft (redken) should be nice and moisturising if you go salon product (it a heavy intense moisturising shampoo/ conditioner), they may have even brought out a shampoo for curls since I last used them.
ohterwise Dove curl shampoo, also not washing often prevents it from drying out, like once every 3 days to once a week.

plaiting at nights good to, my friends mum used to rag my hair lol.
I cant wait till Haleighs hair is long enough to plait.

I have the same prob as maya!! I try and grow my hair long hoping the weight will pull it down but nooooo instead my hair grows out and gets thick but sits flat at the top! For me it is very much a juggeling act! No hairbrush or hairdryer is allowed near my 'fro because it causes more frizziness so product - damp stuff such as moose work great and learning what hairstyles flatter your curlyness instead of the frizziness.

I've given up on Maya's afro mop. She won't let me near it. I did used to use a salon-only conditioning spray (Paul Mitchell for kids) and then scrunch mousse thru it and clip it back at the front or use a wide headband like Teresa suggested, but she's got it quite short atm. oh yeah to the anti-frizz curl product from a hairdresser there are heaps of choices.
But I found Dove curl shampoo & conditioner was the best (I occasionally use it on haleighs hair really bounces the curl), or if I got salon products which I havent done since I was hairdressing I used redken products All soft Kerastase olio relax (sp) but I think dove or pantene are the nicest on curls (plus they smell devine).
also if you use products just use antifrizz serums rather than heavy products I love teh redken one but pantenes is apparently quite nice to. jsut a small drop of that throguh the curls keeps it shiny and protected to.

haleighs is very curly all I do is wash with johnsons the green apple one with the crocodile on the bottle, every 3rd day and wet down every other day.
I comb when wet (only comb). I dont use a brush as this causes it to frizz.
If you liek the curls dont pull back into a tight ponytail to often as that straightens it out and makes it frzzy as thats what my mum did to mine and brushed it all the time and my hair jsut frizes.
I also use that johnsons easy comb spray in the mornings before I do her hair and jsut comb it and do what Im doing to it for the day. we leave it out more now its getting longer but I do sometimes tie it back.

My 10 year old has curly hair and my BEST advise would be for you to get her used to having it tied up now. Use clips and little piggy tails etc. Unfortunately when nits get into those beautiful curls it becomes a nightmare. Also, it gets them used to looking after there own hair.
I use a small amount of the products I put in my hair on hers.
Oh another thing, curly hair is more prone to getting dry. My DD has blonde curls also which means it gets really dry quickly. I often plat her hair before bed so we don't wreck her hair by trying to get a brush through the tangles in the morning. You need to get it trimmed fairly regularly and avoid cheap and nasty shampoos which helps with keeping the curls nice.

to add to what theresa said, we bought little dinky clips (you know those metal ones that click open and closed,,) and used them in the front of paris's hair, at each side to keep the hair from in her face until it was long enough to tie back.. or cute butterfly clips to just grab a whole heap and get it outta the way, and also used head bands but only once it was really long.

of course now her curls have dropped and look more like this... but the conditioner stuff keeps it nice, otherwise it's just frizzy and ick.. am thinking of going to hairdresser and asking if there's any anti-frizz curl stuff that might work better.

I agree with that one. I use the johnsons strawberry detangler spary in conditioner for my girls.. better than the other johnsons one in the pink bottle.. (the strawberry one's meant for older kids but works sooo much better!!) it's found in the shampoo aisle rather than with the baby stuff.

Paris was the same at that age though, and ayja is the same as well.. her hair is just starting to get long enough to be annoying but once the majority is tied up the rest just stays in the nice tight curls.

These are paris at about 18 months i think.. she had plenty of bad hair days.. there's one after just getting outta bed (is much worse now that her hairs nearly to her bum.. looks like a werewolf!!) another when it was a humid day in hamilton at my sisters, and another with a really good hair day with the spray in stuff in her hair..   all in all i love that my girls have curls though.

My little girl have really curly hair as well. Let it ride out. Once it gets longer and have some weight behind it it will be more managable. Hubby has curly hair and that is his only advice. Nothing you can do untill then. Maddy has such goegous curly hair (well mummy thinks so) which she gets from DPs side of the family but what eva i seem to do lately it just seems to go all over the place. when she gets up in the morning i use a kids conditior spray to brush it and it looks really cute but when drys its all over the place. anyone have any tips???? please
