You don't have to give a lot to make a difference. People are often guilt tripped in to coughing up a tonne of money for a charity. $20 from someone on the bones of their bum means more than $1000 from a billionaire. Donating clothes, toys etc is always good. Facebook have a heap of "pay it forward" pages where you can donate your services and goods to people genuinely in need, then they pay it forward to someone else when they have the means - what ever that might be. I Shaved all my hair off 2 years ago to fund-raise for my best friends toddler with Leukaemia. Have you thought about Kids Can? Only $15 a month to sponsor a kiwi kid. Since becoming a mum myself it breaks my heart to imagine local kids in our own communities going hungry at school, and this is a hard-working charity making a real difference right here right now. Thanks ladies, had forgotten I'd started this! Its great to see so many people are still generous. Will definitely keep giving to our rescue helicopter and maybe st johns (as we live in a rural town, 50 minute drive to nearest emergency department). I'm another one that just does the drop coins in a bucket thing as I work in town there are always people on the street but I can be picky with who I give to. Ususally I choose the ones that affect me most mainly the cancer society because my dad died of cancer and my best friends DH has it, the heart foundation, womans refuge just because they do such a good job, blind foundation and the Arthritis   foundation because my daughter is part of "Kids with Arthritis" and they help our group as well. Every week people seem to be collecting for something there are so many different charities.
We also give away heaps of stuff to the Sally's and hospice shops for them to sell.

I have to admit other than giving my small change constantly to the people collecting on the streets and every year to the cancer society and Poppy day.

I do not have any set charities, is that a bad thing???

oh yeah, and I also hate that you can't just give some coins or whatever, they want a commitment to a monthly donation. I have toi admit, i don't and wont give to WSPA or Greenpeace as they are so agressive on the streets here. When I was working, and out of my office 2 or three times a day, no exageration, in the 2 or 3 block walk to the bank, post office, morning tea whatever, I would be accosted by at least 2 people on a block, like tag team (I didn't get her, your turn..) I lost the plot at this awful smelly dreadlock greenpeace man and told him to p!ss of and get a proper job and stop harrassing people on the street. That was after the 3rd time he accosted me. And I say accostd, becasue none, yes, none of the people ever approached nicely, its just so aggressive. Now I don't know about you, but I like to be able to go about my daily chores and go to the supermarket without being harrassed for money for saving the whales. I have monthly APs to Red Cross, Greenpeace and WSPA- we have joint ones to SPCA and over here to NSPCC.

We are always giving away clothes to the Red Cross too and I give change to the bucket people whenever I see them.

I admit I'm one of those people who can never say no to telephone donation solicitors -- it got so bad, DH would have to take the phone away from me when they called, because I would feel so sorry for them giving me their spiel that I'd have to give. Since we moved house, I don't think they've all managed to find me again! Now I'm getting better at saying no, we already give to certain charities, but I still feel bad...

I collected for Plunket last year, and I can't resist collectors on the street (like the ones collecting for rescue helicopters last week, and the veterans selling poppies a few weeks back). And I can never resist the local schools when they come around selling chocolates.

Basically, I'm a sucker.

I help kids locally - I've coordinated the local primary schools into donating used clothing, toys, blankets etc to a healthcare clinic on the other side of town that has social workers and community health teams that visit families. The clothes etc are distributed amongst the families as determined by need (lots of big families with very little, young mums, poverty etc).

Westpac Hellicopter thingy for us.
With DH travelling so much I try and hedge my bets... As in it will be the year that I dont donate that he needs the service.... So we donate every year!!!

Also give money to local church.
Would love to do more... but on one income....

The Heart foundation.... I think its $20 every 3 months. I give to charities like, heart ofundations, canteen, guide dog, cancer etc when I ahve the money to but other than that I don't give out anymore than we can afford.

I tried to set up a puppy sponsorship last year but the silly old woman running at the time coudlnt get our names right, nor the bank account to pay into and hopefully their latest campaign will get them sponsors cause i think she lost them more than they gained!

I also collect for SPCA via the dog squad...so give of time etc

Hubby actually brought some stuff home about an organization that goes to other places and teach the people to farm ect and to set up schools and as soon as they are self sufficient they use that village to help the nearby villages and then move on to another place.

We have been looking at trying and sponsoring one place. I feel really close to the sitation around kids so will be with something like that. I sponsor a child through Tear Fund and I do give some to our local Church. Other than that, I feel that I have "done my bit" as it were. I heard some wonderful advice, couple-friends of ours get together at the beginning of the financial year and decide what they are going to support for that year, and how much. Just curious, but do you have any charities that you regularly give money to? More than just a few coins in a bucket.

I am thinking about sponsoring a guide dog puppy ($15 a month) and have just written out a cheque for our rescue helicopter. Also recently gave $40 to Make a Wish.
