Yeha I was always a worry wart even being in Nelson where it was hot as I still had her rugged up, people would give me odd looks cause I wrapped her up until late November.

back in my mums day when she had me it was a compulsory 5 day stay until you were ready to go home, and yeah now they push you out the door real quick.
personally i ahted being in hospital for 4days was the boringest 4days ever, wish they ahd a tv in my room lol.

HaLEIGHSMUM - we did the same for ella and it was middle of the day late summer...she was probably too warm but i wasnt risking it....

we never transferred as we werent allowed to in the end but the day we took haleigh home we dressed her in long sleeved bodysuit, woollen singlet, clothes, woollen blanket, hat etc as it was quite cool even for it being beginning oct.

nzpiper, it also depends how busy they are. I have had a couple of friends that birthed in the middle of the night in winter and they were held over and transferred at 8am the next day rather than the middle of the night. So be prepared for all things!! NZpiper we transferred from Womens to St Georges and we had James in a cotton bodysuit with a wool one on top, socks, stretch and grow, wool cardie, booties, mittins and wool hat and a wool blanket on top in the car seat. We also heated up the car before we got in it.

Thanks Emma, thats what Ithink we will have to do....send DF out to warm up the car first it seems scary taking them out so soon but I'm sure I will get over it. I transferred to Birthcare within 4 hours of birth both times, altho granted it was Auckland, and Oct/Feb so not exactly subarctic.

The midwife on the news article recommended a woolen singlet, cardigan, booties and hat plus a stretch and grow/onesie and some warm blankets.

We got the gremlins all wrapped snugly in their capsules before we took them out of the hospital and Willie got the car warmed up and the heater going while the midwife and I brought the girls down so it wasn't so chilly for them. In christchurch it seems we get booted out of Christchurch Womens within a few hours of giving birth and transfer to another hospital. This was on the news recently and raised the question about babies getting a bit hypothermic as they are transfered in the middle of winter after coming out of a warm mummy.

What do you put on the baby? do you really dress it all up at a few hours old? Or do you just wrap it really warmly? We have got a lot of baby clothes already (luckily were given a massive bag of newborn clothes) but we dont have any really warm outers for bubs. Bubs will be born in August which can be bloody cold down here.....and i imagine he/she will arrive in the middle of the night.
