So let them know very sternly that it is too painful otherwise they keep making you try to turn on your side.

Wow so glad they never tried to make me lie on my side - it's only now after 2-3 weeks of recovery that side-lying is mostly ok!!!

Reading some of the tips mentioned in this thread, I'm thinking I got off fairly lightly with recovery. My biggest things I wish I was told are:

1. Your analgesia from the spinal wears off after 24 hours and then you will feel like you were hit by a truck.

2. For the first few days, every 12-24 hrs you'll feel hit by a truck again - ask for more tramadol (I was hardly given any, only told when I said I really hurt that actually I could have some - I could have had a whole lot more) - it's good stuff (although my aunt hates it - it made her hallucinate).

3. They can do delayed cord clamping with a CS! The one part of my birth plan I got, but only because both hubby and my midwife asked for it! I didn't really think they'd do it with a c section and was too loopy at the time to ask, but they actually will as it turns out.

4. You might not get told much about the surgery itself or what to expect during recovery - I came home with a prescription for pain relief and no advice on how long I might need pain relief for, what to look out for that could be signs of infection etc, what activities not to do and how long for... It seems to be all left to my midwife which is fine but I'm surprised I didn't get anything written when I left hospital. I've never had surgery of any kind before and didn't have a clue what to expect. Knowing what I know now, I would have asked way more questions about the surgery and recovery while still in hospital.

I also agree with tying the call button to your bed - I was very painfully trying to find mine dangling somewhere behind the raised bed head a few times during the first day or two, it was pretty upsetting on top of everything. TIE IT ON!

Edited by anna1983 - 19 December 2012 at 10:45am

    Author: tictacjunkie
Subject: 8068
Posted: 02 July 2012 at 2:36pm

Hi KLH, I've had 5 c-sects now and each time recovery was slightly different, but if you are having an elective c-sect you have to stay in hospital for a minimum 72hrs after in most cases.

Looking after older children once you're out of hospital I didn't find a huge problem, I have approx 2 years between my children so have always had a 2yo in the house while recovering, and DH's job (hv electrician/ line mechanic) has meant he wasn't always able to be around to help.

You should be fine after 3 days to do most things by yourself, but you'll still have to TRY avoid picking the other kids/ heavy things up.

I planned ahead by getting the house pretty tidy before the surgery, I boxed up half the kids toys so it was harder for them to make a mess, hid the talc, pens etc that they like to make mess with. Did all the cleaning before too so it would "last" the week after. I did my groceries based on "easy", lots of dried fruit, crackers etc that you can give the kids for lunch and tea (and yourself) without having to prepare a lot. Precooking a few things like shepherds pie to reheat later works well.

I bought dettol wipes for just the week or two after, it just made cleaning benches/loo etc slightly easier/quicker. All the "slightly easier"s add up when you're tired, recovering and stretched for time.

I prepared a mental list of things I could get other people to do should someone turn up and offer. I was a bit mean and made the kids re-wear clothes that weren't dirty to cut down on washing.

I also kept the 4yo home from kindy for a week or two so there's less running around, a couple of weeks won't hurt . It also keeps the 2yo a bit more occupied having a friend at home.

Take a good multi-vitamin, insist your OH help, not just once baby's arrived but before too. If you have a choice between housework and sleep definitely choose sleep, even if it's a snooze on the couch, the housework will wait, so keep your expectations low on how tidy you want the house to be if you're inclined to be stressed if it's a mess. I'd get up, shower & get dressed every morning just to go back to a nap on the couch, at least if anyone turned up I felt "presentable", which was important to me. It also meant I was in the shower while DH was still home in the morning, and he could look after the littlies for 15mins.

I think waiting that extra few months depends entirely on the kids that you have already. But I found an 18-19mth old was easier to deal with than a throw-tanties-at-everything 2-3yo.

Just be kind to yourself, an exhausted Mum is no good to anyone! Those hairy first few weeks with a newborn post c-sect with older kids can be hard but they are only a few weeks. Definitely try to avoid a late winter/early spring due date though, can't have everyone calving at once!

Hope that helps.

Second time round, DD2 was (from what I understand) in very bad shape .
On top of that, the damage she has caused to me means VB is not advisable.
So Im sort of planning (cause I totally overthink this sort of thing!) when we will look at ttc for #3 (looking at early-mid next year meaning the girls would be 2+ and 4+ when baby came along) knowing Ill go for an elective but Im not sure what to expect in terms of recovery with older kids. Im wondering really if waiting an additional 6months+ would make a huge difference or if it will be much the same regardless.
We are dairy farmers who (at the moment, but this might change) live far enough from family that I cant rely on them too much, and we dont have many friends locally so Im worried Ill end up a bit stuck - depending on the time of year, DH wont be able to take a block of time off and even if he could, it would only be a few days at best.

All advice/comments/stories welcome

Driving home from hospital after your CS? I hate to say this but that's really irresponsible. Your body is NOT ready for you to do that 24-48 hours after MAJOR abdominal surgery. My goodness. What if you have an accident and you slam on the breaks and rupture? What if you cant put down the pressure required and kill all of you? Come on now. Thing logically about it. I was driving 3 weeks after both of my CS's. If you dont like the way your DP drives, get someone else to drive you. I've never heard anything so rediculous in my whole life.

After baby 1 i wasnt even able to wipe my own backside nearly without assistance for a week, baby 2 I felt like I was drugged up on god knows what for days. I dont know what makes you think you're going to drive yourself home - unless you're planning on staying in the hospital for over a week.
And GirlsRock, I'm sorry if this offends you, its just the way I feel about it.

    Author: Chantelle_SA
Subject: 8068
Posted: 06 December 2010 at 8:41pm

I was planning a natural birth for my DD (first baby) and only skim read info about C-sections because I was so adamant that I was going to pull it off. I was in labour for about 6 hours before we went to the hospital, where after manually breaking my water my gyne said there was meconium in the fluid and gave me the 'option' to do a C-section because the baby 'could' go into distress. It all went downhill from there. I was in too much pain to really focus and all I heard was 'baby in distress' so I automatically said 'do it'. I had to wait 2 hours for my 'emergency'(I say with very heavy sarcasm) C-section and it was such a pain when they tried to put in the epidural because the guy would try every single time I'd get a contraction. It took three goes before he finally got it right, and another five to ten minutes before they had baby out. I didn't get to hold DD for 3 hours. Nobody told me what to expect, and nobody told me that my baby had to receive phototherapy and therefore was not brought to me, and they didn't leave her with me in the room either.

With DS (baby two) I had a midwife with me, and I feel really bad for not remembering her name because she was so awesome. We decided to try VBAC, so on a decided day I went in to hospital and 'laboured' from 10 am to around 6pm by being induced. But I'd read up on C-sections this time around and we were prepared that it could end up in another emergency one. I think I passed out during labour twice, and the third time I really did blank out because when I opened my eyes my room was swarmed with people that weren't there a second ago. Baby's heart rate dropped on every contraction, so they rushed me in for an emergency C-section. And I do mean, an emergency C-section. They had me in the operating theatre before I realised they'd moved me from my room, and get this: I was waiting to feel them cut, like the first time. One of the guys told me 'if you feel anything just squeeze my hand ok?' I managed a nod - I was shaking like crazy, shock I think - and two seconds later I hear this weird sound, and then my partner was holding a baby next to me and I was O_O Whut? That's it? He's out ALREADY? LOL. I didn't even know they'd cut me yet. So it was all really quick, and as frightening as that ordeal was, as soon as they rolled me out of theatre and put baby in my arms, the shaking stopped. It was pure magic.
Ruined by him pooping all over both of us two seconds later, but that's life for you.

I bonded much better with DS because he was with me from the moment I left the theatre, and I think your mindset and emotional state during the pregnancy plays a very large factor on how you bond with your baby too.

But what I've personally gained from these experiences, which I don't know if it's been mentioned or not, is that if you get a really bad headache after a C-section, you should mention it to the nurses because it's likely to be caused by some of the fluid from the epidural collecting in your spine, or something like that. I have a weird back, apparently, because this is the second anaethesist that had to try more than once to administer it to me right. But he was a really nice guy, and he felt genuinely bad about it, but again I believe I have something wrong with my back.

For bubs number three due next year August/September, I'll have to have a select C-section. It should be a piece of cake since I now officially know what to expect.

A blessing in disguise though, as no running to the loo.

No one warned me that I couldn't stand straight for 2 weeks or drive for 3 months due to the pain.

Taking morphine, voltaren and tramadol for 6 weeks was a surprise.

After reducing the medications, I found that they were the reason why my daughter would stop breathing 4-6 times a day, long enough for the monitor to go off and then start again. Overnight it all stopped when I changed to neurofen.

The pediatrician didn't pick that up.

Now I worry about the meds being a factor in her development being about a year behind my other daughter. Or it could be just what second kids do.

At 21 months post c-section I am still numb to my belly button, and some skin feel like it is burning when I touch it. So I just don't touch it :) Hospital physio recommended rolling a tennis ball over the healed scar to help the ropey/sore feeling. It actually did help me.

Edited by MrsSmith

The first night they bought him in and the nurse helped hold him to my breast and I fell asleep! When i woke up I apologised and she said "no worry he's been fed" She had just held the baby to my breasts while I was asleep!

I got given 2 doses of lactulose and boy at 3am did it open the floodgates.
Author: weegee
Subject: 8068
Posted: 05 January 2009 at 11:10am

I second the heat pack! At the hospital I was in you weren't allowed to use the food microwaves to heat them up though, you had to use a special microwave that was hidden away in the sluice room, it was a bit scary going in there, all sorts of medical paraphernalia and a big poster on the wall saying how to estimate quantities of blood loss, complete with pics!

Also, if you have an emergency c-section, just because you haven't pushed your baby out doesn't mean you won't have some of the same after pains as if you had a VB. Labour is still pretty rough on the body even without the last two stages.

TMI warning: I have to say, unfortunately lactulose doesn't always work. I got given several doses of the horrible stuff and they didn't seem to make any difference. In the end - a week later! - lots of grapes and a massive quantity of water did the trick. And if you get bunged up like that, don't think that once you've finally passed your big chunk of clay-like poo the floodgates will open , it's a gradual process to get rid of all the concentrated waste.

In hindsight, I was lucky - I felt very sorry for myself at the time but I was separated from JJ for 5 days at the beginning because he was in SCBU, then I developed a wound infection and we were there for another week and a half. But it meant someone else was doing all the basic baby care when I still couldn't walk etc, and I was basically fully mobile again by the time we got home. So count your blessings I guess.

Oh, and I think everyone should keep a record of things they want for their labour next time if they want to try for a VBAC - I think part of my problem was that I hadn't fully prepared myself (I remember thinking once we got to the hospital "I'm not sure I've thought through this!") and I'll have far more specific instructions for my DH for next time. Plus I was too independent and didn't want any other support people there, next time I'll enlist a whole team

ETA: I recently realised that I basically have amnesia for the first 48 or so hours after the birth, don't know if it was the pain meds or some kind of response to trauma, but I don't remember much at all! I must have been so out of it!

Edited by weegee

When I didn't take it, it definately hurts and slows ya down.
And the other great advice my MW told my husband was for me to feed, eat and sleep and do nothing else, I think that helped my recovery heaps.
Oh and having a good height change table helped heaps.

And my mother came evryday and cooked dinner and cleaned the house, lifesaver.

But you are right how you give birth is not the most important thing. I also have two things to add to the list.

Allow as much fresh air into the shower as possible when you have your first shower after c/s as you may feel woosy and the steam from the shower may worsen that woosiness and cause you to faint. My best c-section was my first as I knew it was going to happen (it was elective due to breech bubs)and I often wonder if I hadn't tried and failed with my other two whether I'd have that feeling. I've spoken to a couple of mums who have only had elective c-sectinos and they simply can't understand why anyone would want to birth naturally and feel quite settled with their birth experiences.

I really truly have felt inadequate and like a failure after 2 failed vb's and a comment like this really helps me to pull myself together and to look at the positives. I have always wanted a large family but swore after ds#2 that I would not have any more children because of needing to now have a c/s each time I have a baby and the feelings of inadequacy that follow after a c/s for me. But you are right how you give birth is not the most important thing. I also have two things to add to the list.

Allow as much fresh air into the shower as possible when you have your first shower after c/s as you may feel woosy and the steam from the shower may worsen that woosiness and cause you to faint. (That just about happened to me)

Try not to stay sitting on your backside in the same position for long periods as this may cause blisters. (I got blisters on my bum and I swear they hurt more than my c/s wound!)

Sleep when you can even if it means visitors have to wait to see you and the new bubba as a c/s can really take it out of you. (Also applies for vb so I hear. I lost a lot of blood after my 2nd c/s and I felt like I was suffering from chronic fatigue for ages until my iron stores built back up again)

It's funny how we each have our own interpretation on a c/s. It has been an informative read going through all these posts and if I have to have a 3rd c/s I will be in the know even mre than I was 2nd time round, thanks to all you ladies.

Same process for coughing as the ladies mentioned earlier.

Giving birth is just a moment in time, you'll be a mother for the rest of your life so dont get upset that you didnt get the birth you planned on, the most important thing at the end of the day is you and your baby are safe and well.

Peeong doesnt sting though so thats good.

I definitly agree with holding something against your scar while you pee/poo etc, as the straining and pressure from your bladder etc can make going really uncomfy, I find holding something soft hard against my scar and leaning back slightly when I go loo helps stop it hurting.

ETA- Also, when my scar is quite sore, like after walking round or standing for too long I put the heat sack on it for a while and it feels so much better afterwards.

Edited by CadensMum

The nurse will make you take it off again.

b) Take a doughnut pillow to sit/lie on for the first 24 hours. Seriously, my backside hurt worse than my c-section wound after 24 hours of sitting on a crease in the plastic mattress cover!

c) Drink HEAPS while you still have the catheter in. It means you can make sure you are really well hydrated without having to totter into the bathroom.

d) Getting baby into and out of the plastic fish bowls provided by the hospital is almost impossible for the first day and very painful for the next few days. So don't bother! Just keep bubs close to you in bed. They are used to being close to you anyway so it eases the transition into the big wide world.

e) The sooner you get up and moving around the easier the recovery will be. Take it slow and easy and if you decide to walk round the corridors get someone a bit steadier to carry your baby!

f) Hold a flat pillow tight against your tummy when you get out of bed.

g) If you need to cough, imitate a cat with a hairball and 'huurrr huurrr' first to move the phlegm. Then sit with a pillow pressed against your tum and cough. You can also get dh to stand behind you and hold the pillow tight while you cough.

h) Make a fuss if it hurts! Studies show that if pain is effectively dealt with in the initial period then it passes faster. You shouldn't be in pain as long as you have the morphine drip in. If you do then it isn't working. They can give you another booster shot. And keep taking your panadol, tramadol and voltaren for the full recommended period. You won't get dependent on the.

i) Stay in you pj's once you get home. If you have a shower then get dressed into clean pj's. You are less likely to try and do too much or be expected to do more if you look like an invalid!
