Jax - I totally agree with your comments, dairy is a HUGE industry and a very difficult one at that! And I shouldn't have opened my big trap and blammed Fonterra straight away, I guess I am making reference more to the 'rich get richer......', and how its harder for the little man to get in front now, with all the added expenses these days.

Just to clear up a couple of things re: Fonterra - it is a co-operative company, meaning that the shareholders are the owners, ie: the farmers that work and produce milk for the company. While it is true that exchange rates and earnings from exports influence share prices, this in effect means that the farmers are paying themselves more for the work they are doing. Once you take into account all the costs involved in setting up and maintaining a dairy farm it is a bloody expensive business, and unless it is a family business or the farmer has been in dairying for a few years, some barely manage to break even let alone get a decent profit. And just one last bit of food for thought - if the dairy industry were to shut down (whether it be in one day or one week or whatever) a *quarter* of NZ's GDP would disappear altogether. Not good !

We get our milk from the local fruit & vege shop - 2x 2L for $4.50 - that's $1.13 per litre. yeah but the reason the price of milk has gone up is cause they have given the farmers a pay rise...but instead of fonterra paying it we are.

Its such a shame that we can buy fizz for cheaper than milk - considering how much we export and how much money goes into fonterras pockets!

My DH was a dairy farmer, I used to love going to the vat and getting fresh - full cream milk (so good in coffees), best of all it was free, hard when we left farm, as we had to start buying it.

Dani - I agree with you! Your kidding me!! . Wow we go through around 16 litres a week so that's a rise of 2-40 almost another two litres at the the cheap price.

They want us to feed our kids healthy food and drinks but yet you can buy a 1.25 litre of fizzy for .85c and the cheapest milk we can get here is $2-45 for a 2 litre.

What's next bread?

Hubby told me last week it was going up...but 15c a litre...

that meant the 2 litre milk i normally buy has gone up 30cents. i was really shocked.
