Cheese is OK from 9 months, but use formula/EBM to make up cereals etc. till 12 months as they don't recommend whole milk before 12 months.

As for the baby cereal, I give my girls baby rice mixed with formula and a little fruit for breakfast, and I also use the baby rice to thicken any of their other solid meals that are too runny. Maya had baby cereal until she was relatively old, definitely close to a year old. Plunket don't recommend adult breakfast cereals till after 12 months.

How long should I use baby rice as a part of Andy's meals? Do I only use it when the meal has no meat in it? Gave Andy some chicken today. Does that mean he doesn't need the rice as he's getting iron from the meat? If you are giving meat as a meal, you probably dont need to do baby rice as well. When Harlan first started solids, we used baby rice for three days, then onto tin foods - Number 1 Watties, then when he was 5 1/2months we started on Number 2 - Watties foods - which are meat. This gives him enough iron.

2. I bought some dried split peas so make up for Andy. Does anyone know how to cook them? Do they need to be soaked first? Not sure about this one.

3. How long should Andy be given smooth food for before we start just mashing with a spoon? How about soft finger foods? It's amazing how varied the books are. Once they start to chew there food, maybe when they start to get first tooth, mind you, some of the Number 2 foods are mashed and seem to be ok. Soft finger foods would be good in a maslum bag - banana, apple, pear etc, as some items they can choke. Finger food is more for 8 - 9 month olds.

4. Has anyone made their own teething rusks? I was told to use marg and marmite on toast and bake for ages. Been looking at the marmite jar. Doesn't look very natural to me. Yip - make sure toast is cooked well, spread a little bit of marg, then marmite. Marmite has the vitamins etc in, you could also try vegemite.

5. How about using milk and stuff in recipes? Some books say NO DAIRY before 1 others are using it from 4 months!! Everything I have read says dont start ANY dairy until 12 months, especially for reactions. Some children are ok to start dairy earlier, all depends on the child. No harm in trying. I know with Harlan he has a great stomach!!
