My little cousin was travelling in the car with Nana and grandad one day when he was about 15months and all of a sudden he yelled out from the back of the car holy f***en hell nana look at that truck. Nana said to grandad pull over the car right away and then had a big long chat with him about swearing. Well the little rascal came to me later that day and recited nanas lecture pretty much word for word to me because i had said s**t. Maya's a bit OCD too when it comes to getting things right - she gets really frustrated because she tries to dress her dolls in her own clothes and they are waaaay too big and fall off. Yet she has a whole box of dolls clothes that she won't play with.

Alyssa we are sure is OCD. She wont even go to bed if 1 book is on the floor in her room, yes we have done a test and made her leave her room messy. Looks like I lucked out - Maya prefers making the mess to cleaning it up! Yesterday she dragged half her toys outside to play "Christmas Trees" and when I asked her to bring them in before it got dark she said "No thank you Mama, you can do it".

Its very natural, Roksana, it means she is exploring the world with her mouth, and is a prelude to teething. I don't think you can stop it. At her age, (and Jake still does it at 8 1/2 months) everything goes int he mouth, thats how they "discover" stuff. Plunket will make a note of this milestone!
he gagging is norml as well, just keep an eye on her, and don't let her have anythign smaller than a film canister!

Hey Janine....the whole hand sucking thing.....Zaara is constantly doing that now.....even after her feeds. Dribbles and blows bubbles. when we say Yacky Yacky Zaara she smiles and sucks in all the bubbles.....

Hannah used to push off the end of the baby bath too, so I just put her in the normal bath, lying down on her own.
She copes really well with anything to do with water! Now has showers with me in the morning which makes my life so much easier, rather than getting her trying to climb in or sucking the shower curtain. We move tomorrow and am so glad we have a full bath instead of a shub we have at present.I have the tommee tippee bath duck thingy if my grl grows outa her bath bt not quite big enuuff for big bath.Xander used it over summer when he was 6 mnths as his first paddling pool!! was perfect size for that too.

I used to sit on the toilet (with the lid down!) and watch Maya in the bath. But washing hair is a mission, even in the shower. I always save it till last coz it always ends in tears! we tried paris in the shower a few times but she hated it. we have a new bath for ayja, a cute pink one, but she kicks too hard against it and nearly donks her head on the end so i think she may be out of it a bit sooner than i thought. will have to try Paris in the shower again soon though, lying her back on my arm to wet her hair and wash the shampoo out is killing my back and my arm. I am so not getting into the Blues Clues debate! In our house it's Barney all the way...

We had a bath with the groove in it too, but I never actually used the groove, and found that as she got bigger it got in the way. When she was 5 mths I moved into a house with no bath, so I bought an inflatable bath from the Baby Factory that was supposed to fit her till she was 2. When that got a hole in it, I replaced it with a huge plastic tub that I put in th ebottom of the shower and filled from the taps, but by that stage she was about 15 mths and well able to sit up alone. I heard that steve lost the plot from talking to nobody but a blue screen, he couldnt handle it and the meds he was on didnt help so they found joe and made a quick intro and changed them... God who actually knows... But as for Caleb steves a big boy and off to college and when Caleb gets bigger hell go to college to.. oh, you've been tortured with that too huh.. can i just say that joe is not the same.. bring back steve!!!lol

for paris we had one of those baths with the but groove in the bottom, and i thought that was great for sitting her on, cos she didn't slip, but as she got bigger, when you wanted to float her, her back hit it. there's no way i can stop ayja getting water in her ears, she loves to put her head right back into the bath.

hey lizzle - i can't help you with the getting out of bed thing too much. since paris never learnt to roll over till she was 14 months, she never got out of bed. i guess bum-shufflers are good in some ways lol. but we also used a safety sleep. we tried her for daytime naps for a while first, and the first few times, we put her in the bed when she was really tired so we guaranteed she would sleep. once she did learn to move though, we had her getting out. she would bring all her toys and sit in the hallway. i think she got pissed with us cos we just kept putting her back to bed, saying, love you, goodnight, and walking out. it got pretty damn frustrating, but after about a week of doing this 20 million times per night, she got the message and stayed in bed.

i'm actually dreading Ayja getting bigger, i have the feeling she will be an early mover and ihave never had to handle that.. argh, i guess i'm in for fun times.

I actually fond the towelling bath rest useles as no matter how shalow the water was Xander still got water in his ears(something i worried bout as a new mum).i want a daphne seat,its plastic and grows with bub till they r sitting.

lizzle if he cant get off the bed he will stay there - maybe get a barrier...just watch what method you use to get hm to sleep in a bed - any bad habits you start now can be hard to break later - like laying down with him - read in the little treasures mag a mum who has to lay down with her 4 yr old every night till he goes to sleep and she also had a 2 yr old that had a bottle at least 4 times in the night. that would be so hard.

hey Janine, looks like jake will move into a bed at fifteen months and I was a little worried about naps. How do you get them to stay in the bed for naps? At the moment, even in his cot, we put jake down and he's standing two minutes later. ive got another thought for baby baths, in your normal tub, fold a towel in half long ways and role the end a few times for a pillow... lay it in the bath and place bubs on that means you have both hands kinda free, and no worrying about letting the lil wrigglers go... and you dnt feel like your backs breaking, i also use my sons lil plastic chair to sit on beside the bath... still going ....... almond oil is natural and great for dry skin (eg post term babes) for massage/and or a couple of drops into the bath water. Bathing can be good too if babe is really unsettled at anytime. Get a bath with a plug, use it on the kitchen bench (easy to fill- and no carrying) have the changing pad next to it all set out. Simply move bath over sink and let plug out when finished! bench height good for your back too!

Can i throw in a slightly different perspective on bathing/lotions etc?   I like to only use natural products on babies skin (eg newborns) there are different ranges you can buy eg Eco Store (has some products available in foodtown) J & J smells awesome but is chemically based as is most widely available baby products. Eco store has soap, shampoo, essential oils, bottom creams etc. Bum creams really only need to get used when theres a rash (as rashes arent that common) and as for bathing - i choose to bath everyday at about 8pm - nice/deep and hot. we gave paris a pillow when she moved to a bed at 11 months.. Maya had a 'pillow' in her cot from about 18 mths coz it seemed to help keep her in one place instead of getting all bunched up at the top of the cot. But not sure what the 'official' recommendation is, I think Becs might be right with 18 mths.

Maya was a hairy baby, had the hairiest ears and back, and she was covered in heaps of vernix when she was born, looked so white. Then she got jaundice and was really yellowy brown for a few weeks so looked really dark, and now she is kind of olivey. We bath every night here. But it is a pretty full on evening. Jayde bath at 5 Alyssa at 5-30. Then i only have half an hour to cook dinner. So its nothing flash these days. Cant wait till they can start bathing together.

Liz i cant be any help Alyssa didnt get a pillow till she was about 18 months and in her big girls bed. yep so did we - i gave then to my little sis when she had her bubs cos she loves all that kinda stuff.

and what Emma said is right.. by birth alot of the vernix and downy hairs on a baby have come off.. that's why premmies are usually gooey and kinda hairy looking lol, and overdue babys aren't.

Hi everyone I had to put my 2 cents in too. I love using the aqueous cream. I found the J&J stuff caused dry skin for my boy so ended up throwing it out and bought the aqueous cram for $6 at the chemist. Put a fingerful in the bath and just washed with the water and it worked really well. I used talcum powder for bottoms unless he looked a little bit red then used the zinc & caster cream. I've only had nappy rash on Alex once when he was sick so seems to work well. You definitely DON'T need heaps of stuff for babies as far as creams etc are concerned. Wow!!! So many replies in such a short time! Thank you so much everyone!! I was planning on using flannels to wash when I do nappy changes at home too, we always did that with my little sister and it just seems to make more sense. I am off to the supermarket tomorrow so I will have a look, glad to know I don't need everything, lol, it seems so daunting standing in front of those huge shelves packed full of stuff!!

i second the pams wipes, the unscented ones. but you wont need them for a while. i use flannels for newborns, and i'm not a regular bather for newborns either tho, but he gets a wipe over every time he's up. in the bath i put nothing - they dont need perfumed stuff or creams (unless really dry as is my bub being overdue). You will get some cool stuff in the bounty pack, i think my tube of mustela lasted ages - thats good for nappy rash - and also the packet of curash which i buy now and use and it clears up any nappy rash asap.

When jake was born i was really scared about bathing him, so i ended up putting him in the bath with me. Then would call for someone and they would get him out and dry him. then i would dress. We use aqueous cream too for Maya's exczema, if I catch it early enough it avoids the need for yucky hydrocortisone creams that are no good for their skin long term. I use it on my hands too since I get dermatitis on them.
Thought I would mention too that babies born preterm or around their due date tend to have more vernix than babies born after their due date as it absorbs into their skin. I read all about what to expect before Maya was born, but she had way more vernix than I expected. Apparantly it's one of the ways in which midwives and doctors gauge how overdue a baby was, by how much vernix they have. (sorry, I ramble on...)

I dont use baby wash directly on my kids skin, i just put a drop in the bath. And only in the last few months have been using shampoo on ALyssa's hair. I just rinse Jaydes hair in the bath water (shampoo is ment to make cradle cap).

I use zinc and castor oil at nappy change. And the Johnsons nappy liners with water. I only use wipes when out and about as i find they give nappy rash.

Aquious (SP) cream is fantastic if babys skin is a little dry and free on perscription. i bathe hannah every day (well, 6.5/7) and have since she was born, as it was part of letting her know it is bedtime. apparently babes' skin dries out if they are bathed too much, but hannah hasn't had any problems so i continue to bathe her every day. she loves it too!

i just use baby wash in the bath and powder at most nappy changes. wipes are convenient but not so good for bums. i find Hannah develops nappy rash if i use them too much so i try and limit wipes to big messes!!!
i've only ever used lotion on hannah twice so i wouldn't go too overboard with that. esp since if baby is prone to eczaema then all the perfume in the j&j lotions probably isn't the most ideal thing.

yeah, that's what i mean by top and tail. use a wet flannel, wipe the top half over completely, dry it, then do the bottom half. its a bath without all the fuss. trust me, you probably wont have the time to bath baby heaps and heaps, sometimes you just get everything sorted and they fall asleep, and if they've been awake all day you just think "they had a bath last night, there's no way i'm waking them!!!" lol

Roksana, you can ask the midwives and nurses to help you bath your baby for the first time as soon as you want. but keeping the vermix on their skin for a day or so is pretty good for it, makes it nice and soft. you can use the baby bath in their bath from newborn but only use a small amount, and for the most part, unless they have an absolute ton of hair, you don't really need shampoo for a long time.. just give the head a good wash over. sometimes shampoo can tend to build up on them scalp and give them more craddle cap than if you just used water.

I'm a clean freak too, i hate icky dirty grubby kids, to a point.. The midwife at the hospital put J&J wash in Maya's first bath, so I assume it's ok for newborns. I can't use the Bedtime Bath, I used it in my own bath when I was pregnant and even now two years later I still feel nauseous when I smell it! We used the moisturising baby wash since Maya has always been prone to dryish skin. I bought all the baby lotions, oils etc. but I still have two full bottles of baby lotion that I never used, and Willie ended up using the oil for his bald head! The lotion was good when Maya's skin was a bit dry. We also used the Curash nappy rash powder since Maya was in cloth nappies which tend to make them a bit more prone to nappy rash, and it was great. A bit more expensive than the J&J but worth it. We also found the Pams unscented wetwipes to be just as good as the more expensive ones, and so much better than some of the really cheap ones you can get which have heaps of perfume.
You should get heaps of free/discount coupons for J&J stuff in your bounty pack, and if you ring them before bubs is born and ask for advice they will post you free samples too. (The 0800 number is on the back of all their products). we don't use much. johnson and johnson are great. we got the baby bath stuff to go in the bath, saves having to soap baby up and get it all slippery. then we usually just move up to the top to toe wash later once babys older. normal powder is good, the floral one is a bit overpowering for wee noses. and we use the johnsons anti-rash powder on bottoms. have used mustela cream which you get a sample of in the bounty pack - but it's $18 a tube to buy after that, so the anti-rash powder is much kinder on the wallet ($4) and just as good. other than that there's not alot, just baby buds etc. people make you think you need heaps of stuff. you don't, find one that works for you and stick with it. wipes aren't a must-have either, flannels are perfectly fine for cleaning baby's bottom, and probably kinder to it. just get those soft stretchy ones from tnt, i think they're about $5 for 6 of them they're great for bums faces and everywhere else. they're also easier to dry baby's creases with after a bath instead of trying to fit a bulky towel under their chin and neck creases, just grab one of them and you can fit it right in all the tricky places to dry. good luck

Nana bought me EVERYTHING in the johnson and johnson range. I never used the bay oil. I used the lotion a couple of times when Jake had dry skin, other than that it makes a fanatstic make-up remover, and cream for shaving your legs. I have some zinc cream for nappy rash. I bought some baby bathtime stuff which smells lovely, for the bath and hair.....completley unessential, but nice, and we use baby powder in the heat. Ok, I didn't know where to post this but I know wherever it is it will get read...

I feel really silly but as you all know our wee one should be here in about 4 weeks and I realised that I have no idea about what kind of creams/lotions etc. I need for changing and bathing the baby... I wanted to go out and get some things so I am prepared and all the books say different things.

You guys always klnow more that the books so I thought maybe you could tell me just the essentials that I will need for a newborn. You all probably know the best brands too?
